The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again, talking feet and miles per hour. This stretch of surf is a slow burner, no doubt about it.

The first few days are flat. Your first real chance to get wet is Sunday morning, August 2nd, down at Portrush-West Strand. It’s small, with a clean 2.5ft NW swell, but the real gold is the glassy conditions – a light SE wind, just 3 mph, and the water is flat calm. It’s a beginner-friendly break, so perfect for a log. The water’s about normal temp for the season. Wave energy is weak (83), but for a relaxing Sunday session, it’s fine.

The swell crashes after that. Monday and Tuesday (August 3rd and 4th) are tiny and messy. Then we get a long run of poor surf, onshore winds, and choppy water straight through the end of the first week.

Things pick up a little on Monday, August 10th. The morning shows a 3ft NW swell, period up to 9 seconds, and clean cross-off winds from the SSE at 6 mph. The energy is moderate (120), and the waves are surfable, but nothing special. It’s the best we’ve had in a while, but it’s still just okay.

The real one to watch is Wednesday, August 12th, in the afternoon. That’s the standout. The swell jumps to 8ft from the NW, with a short period of 8 seconds, but the wind turns offshore – light SE at 3 mph, glassy clean. The combined energy is strong (771), and the model says very good surf conditions. This is a solid, powerful wall of white water. For a beginner spot, 8ft is big, so this is for the experienced surfers only. It’s a short-period swell, so it’ll be a bit lumpy, but clean offshore wind will make it rideable. Crowds are often here, and with waves like this, expect a packed lineup.

After that, it’s back to small, poor conditions, with strong winds and messy seas through to the end of the forecast. So, save your energy for the afternoon of Wednesday, August 12th. That’s the real session.
