The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next 16 days for Doolin Point are a real mixed bag, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing special, then a late push of energy that might just get the blood pumping.
Right now, and for the next week or so, it’s a flat spell. The swells are tiny, all under 2 ft, and the wave energy is weak, often sitting in the low teens to 30s. The water is sitting at 63°, which is a touch warmer than we’d expect for this time of year, but that’s about the only good news. The wind is mostly cross or cross-off, so it’s clean, but with no size to work with, it’s a write-off. Even the morning of Saturday the 20th looks clean but feeble. We’re looking at a solid week of poor surf conditions.
Then things start to change around Thursday the 24th. The swell starts to build from the WNW, hitting 3 ft by Friday afternoon, with moderate wave energy (201). The problem is, the wind turns onshore and stays that way. It’s fresh and strong, making things choppy and lumpy. The size keeps climbing into the weekend, with 4 ft swells, and by Sunday the 26th we’re seeing 5 ft from the west and wave energy hitting 388. It’s got power, but the wind is howling straight onshore at 16 mph. For a reef break like Doolin Point, that’s going to be a messy, blown-out mess. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The real standout arrives on Monday the 27th. The afternoon brings a solid 5 ft swell from the west, with a period of 12 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy jumps to 668, which is strong. The wind is a gentle onshore, but it’s manageable. For a point like Doolin Point, that long-period swell will wrap in nicely, offering some good, powerful lines. This is the best on offer across the whole outlook. It’s a week and a half away, so it’s promising but less certain, but the ingredients are there for a proper session.
Tuesday the 28th still has some size, but the wind is back to a moderate cross-onshore, making it choppier, and the energy drops off. After that, the wind gets nasty again with strong breezes and the swell fades back into the doldrums.
So, the call is simple: wait for Monday the 27th. That’s the day to clear your schedule. The rest is a washout.
Rusty.
