The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for Doolin Point over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, it's a pretty grim start. The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. We've got tiny, weak waves and a lot of it is just messy. The water temp is sitting at about 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's about the only thing going for it for a while.
From the 14th of July right through to the 22nd of July, the swell is tiny, mostly around 1ft to 2ft, with weak energy levels. The wind is mostly cross-off or cross, so it's clean, but there's just no power in the water. It's a real waiting game. Even when we get a little bump of energy on the 20th, it's still only about 2ft and the wind goes cross-on, messing it up. It's a tough stretch.
Now, hold onto your board, because things change on the 23rd of July. Thursday morning is the standout. The swell jumps up to about 5ft from the W, with a very long period of 13 seconds. That's proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy is solid and moderate. The magic is the glassy conditions with virtually no wind. This is a reef break, so that long period groundswell will wrap in and create some proper walls. It's an expert wave, and with 5ft and that period, it's not for beginners. This is the one to circle on your calendar.
The morning of the 24th of July is also a good call. The swell drops a touch to about 4ft from the W, still with an 11-second period, and the energy is still strong. The wind is a light cross-off from the NE, so it'll be clean. The afternoon gets blown out by a cross-on wind, so get out early.
The 27th of July, Monday morning, is another one to watch. The swell is back up to about 5ft from the W, with a 9-second period, and the energy is strong. The wind is glassy again. That's a bigger swell, over 5ft, so it's in expert territory for sure, but on a reef like this with glass, it could be firing.
The rest of the period after that drops off a bit, with the swell fading to 3ft and smaller, and the wind turning onshore or cross-on, making it choppy and not really worth the paddle.
So, the clear winner is the morning of Thursday, 23rd of July. Get on it early. The 24th and 27th mornings are solid back-ups, but that 23rd is the real deal.
Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
