The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Doolin Point has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’m calling it as it is right now: the next ten days or so are a tough watch. We’ve got a long, dry spell of tiny, poorly shaped waves and unfriendly wind, so don’t rush to grab your board just yet. There’s a flicker of hope around the back end of the month and into September, but we’re talking a while away and the conditions are iffy. The water is currently reading at 63°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s one minor comfort for a paddle-out.
The first glimmer of something surfable comes on Monday the 24th of August in the morning. We’re looking at a small 3ft swell from the WNW with a long period of 11 seconds, which gives the waves a bit of push. The wind is offshore from the E, and that’s a rare treat – clean conditions on offer. The combined energy is a moderate 159. It’s not epic, but it’s the first decent chance you’ll get. That afternoon looks a bit junkier, though.
Tuesday the 25th morning offers a repeat: another 2ft swell from the W, with a clean offshore breeze from the E. It’s still small, and just a touch of energy at 87, but it’s about the best of a slow week. That afternoon, the rain and a cross-off wind will mess with it.
After that, the surf quality drops off again. We get a couple of small windows on the 30th of August with a tiny 3ft and 3ft swell from the W, and the morning of the 30th has a nice offshore from the ENE. The afternoon of the 30th looks proper glassy – dead calm, 0 mph wind. The waves are tiny at 3ft, but for a longboard or a bit of a session, it’ll be clean and could be a laugh.
Now, for the standout – you have to wait for it, but it’s the only real fire in this forecast. On Thursday the 3rd of September in the morning, we see a solid 7ft swell from the WSW, but it’s coming with a 19 mph onshore wind. The energy is maxed out at a strong 614, but that onshore breeze is going to make a mess of it. It’s an expert-only affair at best. Then on Friday the 4th of September afternoon, a bigger 7ft swell from the W with a very long period of 12 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The combined energy hits a massive 1470, which is proper grunty. But again, it’s hampered by a strong onshore wind from the WSW. For a reef like Doolin Point, that long period will wrap in nicely, but with that wind, it’s a battle. If you’re a seasoned local and don’t mind the chop, it could still offer some heavy, racy walls, but for everyone else, this is a kite day. The one truly standout window for quality is the morning of Monday the 24th of August – it’s small, but it’s the cleanest, most accessible surf in the entire run.
So, to sum it up: we’ve got a solid two weeks where patience is key. The best on offer is the morning of the 24th of August for clean, gentle waves, and the big, raw power of early September is there for the brave. But honestly, if you’re looking for classic Doolin Point, you might be waiting a while.
Rusty.
