The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break down the same outlook but in feet and Fahrenheit for the crew who think in those numbers.
It’s a grim start, no two ways about it. From now until the 24th of July, there’s almost nothing to ride. We’re talking tiny swells of 0.7ft to 2ft, with short periods and weak energy – the combined energy readings are mostly in the teens or twenties, with a few days in the 60s or 70s. That’s flat spell territory. The wind is often cross-off or offshore, which is a good sign for clean conditions, but with no swell to speak of, it’s all for nothing. A couple of afternoons, like Tuesday the 14th, show a little offshore breeze and a 2ft swell, but it’s too small to get worked up about.
The water is sitting at 61°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – nothing crazy, but it’s a nice little comfort.
The only real standout is Saturday the 25th of July. That’s when we finally get a proper pulse. The combined energy hits 633, which is strong. The swell is 6ft from the WSW, with a 10-second period – that’s a decent groundswell. The problem is the wind. Saturday morning is onshore from the W at 9 mph, and the afternoon is cross-onshore from the WSW at 16 mph, making it choppy. The surf is still listed as "poor surf conditions," but with that size and energy, it’s the only chance to get a wave. For Doolin Point, an expert reef break, that 6ft swell is doable for the experienced crew. It’s not for beginners though – over 5ft, it gets a bit hairy.
After that, the 26th and 27th offer similar size but with messy onshore winds and lumpy conditions. The swell energy stays moderate to strong (195 to 205), but the wind is just not cooperating.
So, the bottom line: mark your calendar for the 25th of July. It’s not perfect, but it’s the only real window of opportunity. The rest of the forecast is a flat spell or a wind-blown mess. This spot is fairly consistent, so it can turn on quickly, but for now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
