Alright mates, Rusty here. Let’s break down what this stretch of coast is throwing at us. It’s a lean patch, no two ways about it. The swell is there, but the wind is making a mess of things for most of the run. A couple of windows might give you something if you’re keen to paddle out.

Starting off, from Saturday the 4th through the early part of the week, it’s a mess at Doolin Point. We’ve got a fresh cross-onshore wind kicking up the surface. Swell is running 6ft down to 4ft from the west with a short 8 to 9 second period, and the combined energy is moderate (476 down to 165). Water temp is about average for this time of year. But with that wind, it’s lumpy and choppy – poor conditions. Not worth the hassle.

Things stay marginal into Tuesday the 7th. Swell drops to 3ft, still cross-onshore, and the energy is weak (148). Tuesday afternoon goes onshore. Same story Wednesday the 8th: swell is 3ft, period 9 seconds, but the wind goes light cross-shore and glassy in the morning. The combined energy is barely in the moderate zone (130). It’s clean enough for a longboard if you’re itching, but there’s no real push.

Now, Thursday the 9th of July – this is the best chance. Morning brings a light cross-offshore breeze from the ESE, and the wave comment says "clean." Swell is 3ft from the west, 9 seconds, and combined energy is weak (129). This is the first time the wind plays nice. It’s small and ordinary, but it’s clean. For an expert reef like Doolin Point, you’d want more size, but if you’re on a longboard or a fish, you might snag a few. Crowds are often here, so expect company.

Friday the 10th is another calm moment. Morning is dead glassy with a 3ft west swell, 8-second period, and combined energy is very weak (91). That’s tiny and clean. The wave comment says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." It’s not a standout, just a rare clean lull. Afternoon gets choppy again.

From Saturday the 11th through the 13th, it’s rough. Strong winds and small, short-period swell – a write-off. On Monday the 13th, the swell bumps to 4ft from the west with a longer 11-second period, and combined energy hits moderate (324). That’s a groundswell. But the wind is cross-onshore again, so it’s choppy. Missed it.

Tuesday the 14th offers a glimmer. Morning has 5ft west swell, 9 seconds, and combined energy is moderate (310). Wind is light cross-onshore with just small ripples. The wave comment says "marginal surf forecast." It’s not great, but it’s the biggest swell in a week. For experts, the reef could hold, but don’t expect beauty.

From Wednesday the 15th onward, it’s a fade. Swell drops to 3ft or less, wind stays on or cross-onshore, and combined energy falls into weak or barely moderate. By the weekend of the 18th and 19th, we’re at 1.0ft dribble. Sunday the 19th morning has a light cross-offshore breeze from the ENE and clean conditions, but with 1.0ft swell and 20 combined energy, you’re not surfing – you’re sitting.

Best bet: Thursday the 9th of July morning for clean, small waves with light cross-offshore wind. Second pick is Tuesday the 14th of July morning for the biggest swell, though it’s marginal. Nothing to write home about. Forecasts can change, but for now, keep the board in the car and wait.

Rusty.
