The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let me level with you about this stretch of coast. Straight up, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. The data’s all pointing to a long stretch of messy, onshore, and generally poor conditions. We’ve got a solid run of days where the wind is just not playing ball, and the quality is shot. It’s a real bummer, but that’s the hand we’re dealt.
We’re talking about a quiet start. The first real recommendation doesn’t even pop up until the 28th of July. Before that, from the 16th right through to the 28th, we’re looking at a solid 12-day gap with nothing worth getting wet for. The wind is almost always cross, cross-off, or straight onshore, and the wave comments are all just “poor surf conditions.” It’s a write-off.
Now, the one faint glimmer in this whole outlook comes on Monday the 28th of July. Brinlack Point (Bloody Foreland) might just be worth a look. It’s an inconsistent point break, so it’s not a sure thing, but we’ve got a 6ft swell rolling in from the WNW, and the wind is finally swinging around to a cross-shore from the SSW. The combined energy is moderate, clocking in at 667, and the period is a decent 10 seconds, so there’ll be some push to it. The morning session is described as “marginal surf forecast” with a moderate cross-shore cross-chop, but it’s the best thing on offer by a long shot. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 60°, so you won’t need the thickest suit.
After that, the window slams shut again. The 29th and 30th see the wind ramping back up to a near gale, blowing the place out. So, if you’re going to paddle, that Monday morning window on the 28th is your only real shot. Keep your expectations low, and you might just snag a couple. It’s that kind of forecast.
Rusty.
