The Lowdown
Alright, it’s your boy Rusty. Let’s get into it, and I gotta be straight with you – this one’s a tough read for the next two weeks.
Right off the bat, we’re looking at a flat spell that’s gonna test your patience. For Cable Bay (Porth Trecastell), there’s nothing worth paddling out for from Monday the 13th of July all the way through most of the next week. The swell is barely a whisper, with heights hanging around 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft, and the combined wave energy is laughable – mostly single digits (7 at best early on), so it’s basically a lake. The wind is often offshore or clean, but with no swell to push, it’s all show and no go. Water temp is sitting at 63°F and that’s 4°F warmer than normal for this time of year, so it’s a warm bath, but you’ll just be floating.
The middle of the month is a total write-off. From the 16th to the 21st, the energy drops to zero on a few days, and the small pulses that show up are weak and short-period. A few cross-offshore breezes keep the surface clean, but there’s nothing to ride. The 22nd of July sees a tiny bump – 1 ft from the NW with a period of only 4 seconds – and the energy is just 7. That’s not surf, mate, that’s a ripple.
The only real window that might get your heart beating a little is toward the end of the run. Around the 24th and 25th of July, a SSW swell rolls in. Friday afternoon the 24th shows 3 ft from the SSW, period of 4 seconds, and combined energy of 32 – still weak, but it’s something. The problem is the wind: it’s onshore from the SSW at 12 to 16 mph, making it messy. Saturday the 25th is similar, with 3 ft to 2 ft and the same onshore wind, so it’s gonna be lumpy and blown out. That’s not for beginners – it’s small but choppy, and the short period means the waves are weak and crumbly.
By Sunday the 26th, the wind swings cross-shore from the SE at 16 mph, and the swell drops again. The 27th and 28th are a complete mess with near gale and fresh breeze strength cross-onshore winds, so forget about it.
Bottom line: there’s no standout session here. The best you’re looking at is the 24th and 25th, but it’s poor quality with onshore winds. If you’re desperate, a longboard might catch the tiny clean lines on the 22nd morning, but don’t expect much. This is a classic blank run for this area – it’s normal for the summer to go quiet, and forecasts can flip, but right now, I’d hang the board up for a week.
Rusty.
