The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it, my fellow wave hunters. The forecast for Cable Bay (Porth Trecastell) is a bit of a drought, so let's be honest about what we're looking at.
Honestly, looking at the next 16 days, it’s slim pickings. We’ve got a real flat spell coming up. From now, right through the end of July and into the very start of August, there’s just nothing doing. The energy is almost non-existent, with the combined swell energy barely registering. We’re talking a solid 10 days or more of flat, clean but flat water. It’s one of those stretches where you’re better off swimming or just enjoying the beach.
The first real sign of life, and I mean a tiny whisper, shows up on the morning of Thursday the 23rd of July. A tiny 1ft swell from the west with a short, weak period of 3 seconds. The combined energy is a mere 2 (weak energy). It’s a cross-shore breeze, so it’ll be clean, but it’s not even worth waxing the board for. The swell is just too small and weak to push any decent shape.
We get a bit more movement on Friday the 24th of July. The morning brings a 2.6ft swell from the WNW, with a period of 5 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 33 (weak energy), but it’s not enough to get excited about. The problem is the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, so the surface will be a bit choppy and messy. That afternoon, the wind swings onshore from the SW, making it worse.
The best we can hope for in this whole outlook is the morning of Saturday the 25th of July. We’ll see a 2.6ft swell from the NW, period of 5 seconds, and combined energy of 39 (weak energy). The wind is a moderate cross-shore from the NW, which is about as good as it gets for this period. It won’t be glassy, but it’ll be ridable for the beginners on a longboard. It’s definitely not a standout, but it’s the most surfable wave on offer.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. The rest of the month and into August shows nothing but flat, clean conditions. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual to report here.
So, for the die-hards, Saturday the 25th of July morning is your only real window, and even then, keep your expectations low. The rest of the 16-day window is a write-off for surf. It’s a good time to clean the wax off your deck.
