The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Cable Bay (Porth Trecastell) over the next couple of weeks.

Straight off the bat, I’ll be honest with you: it’s a grim start. The first recommendation doesn’t pop up until Thursday the 27th of August, and even then, it’s a real struggle. We’ve got a long dry spell here, so don’t bother paddling out before that.

The water is sitting at 64.8°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a solid 4.5° above the norm, so you’ll be in for a pleasant dip if you do get wet.

Alright, let’s run through the week. From Thursday the 20th all the way through to Wednesday the 26th of August, it’s basically flat with tiny, weak dribbles. The swell is barely registering, with wave energy sitting in the single digits or teens. The wind is mostly cross-off or glassy, but there’s just nothing to ride. That 0.3ft stuff with 14-second periods on the 24th? That’s a long-period groundswell, but it’s so small it’s a waste of time. You’d be bobbing around for nothing.

The first real chance comes Thursday the 27th of August. We’ve got a 2.3ft swell from the SSW, period of 8 seconds, and the wind is blowing offshore from the NE at 12 mph. That’s clean. The wave energy is moderate (55), and it’s surfable but very ordinary. It’s a small window, and it’s not going to blow your mind. The highlight? Probably the offshore wind, which will keep the face clean, but it’s a tiny wave. If you’re desperate for a paddle, this is your only real shot.

Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th get a bit more size, but the wind is a mess. Friday afternoon sees a 4.9ft swell from the SW, but it’s onshore and messy. Not worth it. Then Saturday morning the 29th, we’ve got a 6.6ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is cross-on at 19 mph. That’s lumpy and choppy, with strong wave energy (350). That’s a lot of power, but it’s gonna be a washing machine. Only for the experts, and even then, it’s not pleasant. The setup is a beach and reef, so with that wind and size, honestly, this looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

Sunday the 30th is a tiny step back to 3.0ft from the SW, with a light breeze. It’s marginal, but the tide might be a pain. The energy is weak (65). Not a standout.

Then we hit another flat spell from the 31st of August through the 2nd of September. Don’t bother.

The last gasp comes on the 3rd of September. Thursday morning has a 6.2ft swell from the SSW, but it’s blowing 28 mph from the S. That’s strong cross-on and messy. Not good. The afternoon is a little better with a 5.9ft swell from the SW, and the wind drops to 6 mph from the west, but it’s still cross-on. It’s marginal, but the energy is strong (295). Again, a big, messy wave.

So, the only real standout? If I have to pick one, it’s Thursday the 27th of August. It’s clean, it’s small, and it’s your only shot at a decent paddle. The rest of the 16-day window is a write-off. No big swells with good wind, just a lot of lumpy, onshore junk or flat spells. It’s a tough run for Cable Bay.
