The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here, and I've gotta be straight with you. Looking at the charts for the next 16 days at Huntcliff, it's a bit of a tough one. There's a whole lot of nothing happening, and what little swell we do see is pretty ordinary.

For the first long stretch of the forecast, we're looking at a real flat spell. The records start on Saturday, August 1st, and to be honest, there's pretty much nothing to get excited about for the next week. The swell is tiny, the wind is often messy, and the energy is weak. We're talking about a lot of days with combined energy values in the double digits, like 10 and 6, which is just not enough to push a decent wave. The water's sitting at about 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's about the only highlight.

We do see a bit of a bump around Tuesday, August 4th, with the swell pushing up to 5 ft from the ENE, and the combined energy hitting 247. That's a moderate energy reading, but the wave comments are still "poor surf conditions" so it's not shaping up well. The wind is cross-on, making it choppy, so it's not a recommended session. It's a real shame because the swell size is there, but the conditions are just off.

The best of what's on offer, and I'm scraping the barrel here, looks like the morning of Wednesday, August 5th. We've got a 3 ft swell from the NE, with a WSW wind of 5 km/h that's cross-off, keeping the surface clean. The energy is still weak at 78, but it's a "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions" situation. You could get a few if you're desperate, but don't expect much.

Following that, after a few more days of nothing, we get another small window on Monday, August 10th, with a 6 ft N swell pushing the energy up to 403. That's a strong energy reading, but again, the wind is a cross-on from the north at 20 km/h, making it choppy and poor. It's a classic case of the numbers looking good on paper, but the reality being a mess.

Then, on Tuesday, August 11th, we see a bit of a clean-up. The morning has a 3 ft swell from the NNE with a light offshore wind from the SW. The energy is moderate at 127. The comments say "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," so it's not a world-beater, but with clean, offshore conditions, it's the best option in the whole forecast. The afternoon glass off might be even cleaner, though the swell drops a bit. Huntcliff is a point break that's rated for intermediates, and it's inconsistent, so don't expect a pumping session. Crowds are possible here, as it's often busy.

After that, the forecast just fizzles out again into the second week with tiny, weak swells and a lot of cross-offshore wind. Nothing to write home about.

So, if you're really keen, the only window worth looking at is Tuesday, August 11th for a clean, small wave. The rest of the time, it's flat and poor. The set-up with the bigger, messy swells and strong onshore wind might honestly be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, if that's your thing.

Rusty, signing off.
