The Lowdown

G’day, it’s Rusty. Let’s have a yarn about what’s coming. For the next 16 days, this stretch starts with a long, quiet gap – from now right through most of September there’s nothing worth wetsuiting up for. The first surfable moment shows up on Sunday the 20th morning, with clean, glassy conditions and a tiny 2ft west swell, but it’s weak and nothing to drive for. The entire first week is plagued by poor conditions, messy winds and small, gutless swell.

The standout pops up late. On Tuesday the 29th of September afternoon, Boiler Left finally gets a pulse – 7ft from the WSW with a 9-second period, and moderate energy behind it (718). That’s a solid size for this reef, and with cross-off winds out of the east at 12 mph, the surface should stay clean. The swell direction matches the optimum southwest, so the lines should set up proper on the reef. Water temp’s about normal for the time of year. It’s a long way out, so treat it like a good rumour – promising but not locked in.

The rest of the second week is tiny – mostly knee-high to waist-high west-southwest swell with clean offshore breezes, but only the morning of the 29th stands head and shoulders above the rest. The reef is inconsistent, but when it does fire, it’s worth the wait.
