The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the next sixteen days are a total write-off for a proper paddle. There's simply nothing to get excited about. We're looking at a long, dry spell with no decent surf on the cards.

The only spot in the frame is Boiler Left, a reef break that's inconsistent and often has company. It's exposed to the southwest, which is the right direction, but the swell just doesn't show up. Through the entire period, the wave energy is pitiful, with the combined energy of all swells directed here barely cracking triple digits on a couple of days, peaking at a measly 234 (moderate) on Wednesday the 5th, but that's paired with a fresh cross-onshore wind making it lumpy and poor. The water temp is about average for this time of year.

For the first week, you're looking at tiny, weak waves. Sunday the 2nd has a glassy morning with 1ft of swell from the WSW, but it's just poor surf. The swell inches up to a maximum of 5ft on the afternoon of Wednesday the 5th, but with a 7-second period and a fresh cross-onshore, it's a messy, choppy affair. Even the glassy, calm morning on Saturday the 8th only brings 0.7ft of swell. The whole first week is a scratch.

The second week is even more barren. The swell stays below 3ft, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the energy is next to nothing. By the time we get to the 17th of August, the combined energy is down to a pathetic 1. This reef is inconsistent for a reason, and this is one of those stretches where it just doesn't fire. If you're desperate for a paddle, you might find a knee-high ripple on a glassy morning, but don't expect a wave you can actually ride. The whole setup looks more interesting for a kite than a surfboard for the next two weeks.

Rusty.
