The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it.

Well, to be straight with you, this 16-day look for the Boiler Left region is a tough one. The whole stretch is a write-off for any decent surf. There's no standout, no session worth paddling out for. It's a long, flat, and messy run with nothing that reaches a quality threshold.

We start on Saturday, the 1st of August, and it's flat. Tiny 1ft of swell from the WSW, but the wind is a cross-on from the west at 12 mph making it choppy, and the combined swell energy is a weak 37. It's the same story Sunday – although Sunday afternoon goes glassy, the swell is a pathetic 1ft, so it's just a flat, oily ocean. This pattern of tiny, wind-affected surf just continues day after day. For the entire first week, through to the 7th, you're looking at nothing over 3ft and almost always cross-on or onshore wind.

There's a notable bump in energy from the 5th to the 6th of August, where the combined energy climbs to 289 and then 250. But don't get excited. That energy comes with a short, weak 7-second period and fresh, lumpy cross-onshore winds. The swell height hits 6ft on the Wednesday afternoon, but with the wind howling from the WSW at 22 mph, it's going to be a complete mess – think blown-out, lumpy, and virtually unsurfable. That setup honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

We finally get a day of glassy calm on the morning of the 9th of August, but the swell is absolutely gone – just 0.3ft. It's a cruel joke.

The second week doesn't offer any redemption. From the 10th right through to the 16th, the swell climbs back up to around 6ft to 6ft, and the energy gets strong, hitting 405 on the afternoon of the 16th. But again, the wind is cross-on or onshore nearly the entire time, and the periods remain short. The only slight glimmer is on the 15th of August afternoon, when the wind goes cross-off from the NNW at 16 mph, cleaning things up with a 5ft swell. But with a 6-second period, it'll be weak, mushy, and closing out fast. It's still a no-go.

So, there you have it. The whole 16-day window is a blank. A long stretch of ugly, onshore slop or flat, glassy nothing. It's rare for this area to be this consistently poor for so long, but that's the hand we've been dealt. Forecasts can change, but for now, don't book any time off work.

Rusty.
