The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight up about what's on offer for this stretch of coast. I've had a good look at what's coming down the pipeline for Petes Reef, and I gotta tell ya, it's a quiet period.
We're kicking off on Monday the 13th of July, and the water temp is sitting at 68°, which is a good 8° warmer than usual for this time of year. That's a seriously notable difference, a real anomaly. You won't need a thick wetsuit, that's for sure.
Right out of the gate, the surf is virtually flat. For the whole first week, from the 13th right through to the 23rd of July, we're looking at tiny little waves, nothing over 1ft. The combined energy is weak, often reading just single or low double digits like 24 or 31. It’s just not worth paddling out. There’s a tiny chance for a glassy moment on the morning of the 17th or the 19th, but with no height, it’s honestly more of a paddle than a surf.
Then we get into the 24th of July. Things finally start to look a little different. We see the swell bump up to about 4ft to 4ft from the SW, and the combined energy finally kicks into triple digits, hitting 103 on the Friday afternoon. But there's a catch. The period is only 5 to 7 seconds, which is short-period windswell, not the good stuff. Plus the wind turns onshore and gets stiff, especially through the 26th and 27th with strong breezes hitting 28 mph and rain in the mix. It’s gonna be choppy and messy. With a reef break and poor conditions, honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, the bottom line? From the 13th right through to the 23rd, we've got a massive gap of over a week with absolutely nothing worth surfing. Then the last few days of the window show a bit more energy, but the quality is ruined by poor wind and short-period swell. There isn't a single standout session in this 16-day period. It is what it is. Might be a good time to wax the longboard just in case, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Rusty.
