The Lowdown
Alright, let's talk about Falmouth - Swanpool in feet and knots. It's a beginner-friendly, fairly consistent little cove facing the SW. The water's about 66°, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year.
We're in a real dry spell. From Tuesday the 18th right through to the morning of Thursday the 27th, the swell is basically flat—less than 1ft—with weak energy readings. The wind is mostly offshore or cross-off, which would be perfect, but there's nothing to ride. It's a solid 10-day stretch with no real surf.
Then we get a spike on the 28th of August. Friday morning shows a 5ft swell from the SW, but it's a short period of 7 seconds, and the wind is a fresh cross-onshore from the SSW at 18 knots, making it lumpy. The combined energy hits 214 (moderate), but the conditions are poor. Friday afternoon the wind goes to a strong cross-off from the WSW at 25 knots, cleaning it up, but that's howling. It's more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle session.
The 29th of August, Saturday morning, is the only real standout. We've got a 7ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 485 (strong). The wind is offshore from the NW at 15 knots, giving us clean, lined-up waves. At 7ft, it's a bit much for the absolute beginners, but it's a beautiful, powerful wave for anyone with experience. Crowds are "often," so expect some company, but it'll be worth it.
The next morning, Sunday the 30th, is still a decent option. A 4ft to 5ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 9 seconds and a combined energy of 283 (moderate). The wind is gentle offshore in the morning and a light cross-off in the afternoon, so it'll be clean.
After that, it fades. Monday the 31st has a 5ft swell but the wind goes cross-shore, making it messy. Tuesday the 1st of September sees a 8ft swell from the SW with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 728 (strong), but the wind is messy cross-shore, so it's raw and choppy. And Wednesday the 2nd returns to smaller, weaker, onshore slop.
So, the bottom line: There's a bleak run of flatness until the 28th. The best bet by a long shot is the morning of Saturday the 29th of August. Get there early for a 7ft offshore session. Sunday the 30th is a solid backup.
