Table - best surf conditions forecast for Falmouth - Swanpool over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the charts for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s a tough stretch ahead. We’ve got a long gap of flat to tiny, messy conditions coming, so don’t get your hopes up early.
The first sign of anything resembling a wave doesn’t show up until the morning of Monday the 21st of July at Falmouth - Swanpool. That’s a solid 12-day wait from the start with barely a ripple to speak of. The water temp is sitting at 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least the wait won’t be freezing.
For that Monday morning the 21st, we’re looking at a chest-to-head high easterly swell pushing 5 ft. The period is short at 7 seconds, so it’s going to be a bit fat and weak. The combined swell energy is moderate at 219. The wind is a light cross-off from the NNW, which will keep the surface reasonably tidy. It’s not a standout day by any stretch, but after such a long drought, it’s the best we’ve got. The afternoon looks similar with 6 ft and offshore winds from the WNW (261 energy). The crowd factor at Swanpool is listed as “often” busy, so expect company on those small, clean lines.
After that brief pulse, it drops away again quickly. The morning of Wednesday the 23rd of July brings a new pulse: a chest-high swell at 6 ft from the WSW (231 energy), but the wind is a strong cross-off at 19 mph, so it will be lumpy. Conditions aren’t great.
The real kicker comes on the afternoon of Thursday the 24th of July. A much bigger swell rolls in, hitting 10 ft from the WSW with a longer period of 9 seconds. The combined energy shoots up to a very strong 1639. This is strictly for experienced surfers only – 10 ft is heavy, powerful water. The wind is a strong cross-off from the SW at 25 mph, so it’s going to be windy and messy. For the average punter, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, to wrap it up: a long, slow start, a small window of clean but average waves around the 21st, and a big, windy, gnarly swell on the 23rd and 24th that only the crew with big balls should even think about.
Rusty.
