The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Falmouth - Swanpool over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough start. We’re looking at a long, dry spell until we get something worth paddling out for.
The water temp at Swanpool is sitting about 65°, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need the thickest suit if you’re just having a splash.
Right now, and for the first week and a bit, it’s pretty grim. From Saturday the 22nd of August right through to Saturday the 29th of August, the surf is just poor. Tiny, weak, cross-onshore junk. There’s a bit of size showing mid-week, but it’s accompanied by strong cross-onshore winds that make a mess of it. Honestly, it looks more like a kite session than a paddle session if you’re desperate. The combined energy stays low, barely tickling 100 for most of that first week.
Then we get a little flicker of hope. On Sunday the 30th of August, the wind finally swings around to a cross-offshore and the swell starts to build. The morning is still a bit ordinary, but by the afternoon, she jumps up. We’re looking at a solid 10ft of swell from the SW, with a period around 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a strong 1001. The wind is a gentle cross-offshore, which should keep things clean. This is the first real standout of the whole window. It’s decent size, so this one is for the experienced crew. Beginners should sit this one out.
The good conditions hang on through Monday the 31st with cross-offshore winds, but the size drops back to 4-5ft, and the energy fades. After that, we’re into a frustrating pattern again. The first few days of September see us scraping around with tiny, weak swells and a lot of wind. There’s a brief pulse on Thursday the 3rd of September with a 7ft SW swell and clean offshore wind, but the forecast still says poor surf conditions.
The real pick of the whole outlook is that Sunday afternoon on the 30th of August. Big, clean, cross-off at Swanpool. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. The rest is mostly a waiting game.
Rusty.
