The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Falmouth - Swanpool.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: this 16-day window looks challenging. There’s a long dry spell with just a couple of late-arriving windows that might be worth a look. The first real suggestion for a surf doesn’t pop up until Saturday, 29 August, and even that is a bit of a gamble. Before that, we’re looking at a solid week of tiny, messy, or just plain poor conditions. From Friday, 21 August right through to Friday, 28 August, the waves are mostly flat or blown out, with a few days of strong onshore winds and short-period junk. Not worth paddling out for.
The first possible glimmer comes on Saturday, 29 August. The morning shows a clean 5 ft swell from the SW with a period of 8 seconds, and a moderate cross-offshore breeze from the W. The combined energy is strong (506), and the water is a touch warmer than usual for the time of year at 65°F. It’s a beginner-friendly break, so that’s a plus, but the swell is right on the cusp of being too much for a learner. The afternoon builds to 7 ft and a period of 9 seconds, with even stronger energy (595), but with clean cross-offshore wind. This is getting into expert territory, but the quality is marginal due to questionable tide conditions, so don’t expect perfection.
The next real standout is on Thursday, 3 September, in the afternoon. We’ve got a 8 ft swell from the WSW with a 10-second period, producing very strong energy (1121). The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the N, and the break is clean. This is a big groundswell – that long period means some proper energy, but it’s a big wave for a beach setup. The tide conditions are still questionable, but this is the biggest, cleanest push of the whole forecast. It’s an expert-only wave at 8 ft.
Friday, 4 September, continues the theme. Morning shows 8 ft from the WSW with an 8-second period and strong energy (843). The wind is a clean cross-off from the N. This is big, powerful, and again, only for experienced surfers. The tide conditions are still questionable, so don’t expect a perfect lineup.
So, the best bet? If you’re an experienced surfer and can wait, target the afternoon of Thursday, 3 September, and the morning of Friday, 4 September. That’s where the biggest, cleanest, most powerful swell hits. For the beginners, the morning of Saturday, 29 August, is your only real shot, but it’s still a bit sizey and the tide is iffy.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the forecasts. Things can change.
