The Lowdown
Right, let’s be honest with you. The next week and a bit is looking pretty grim for Falmouth – Swanpool. We’re staring down the barrel of a long flat spell. There’s essentially nothing rideable from now until the 26th of August. It’s a proper frustrating stretch of tiny, weak lines that are barely gonna break. The energy in the water is weak, with values mostly in the 20s and 30s, which is just nothing. We get some clean conditions with the light offshore breezes, but it’s not going to put a smile on your face. It’s flat out poor.
Then, on Wednesday the 26th, we finally see a pulse of life. The swell pushes up to 4ft from the WSW, with a short-period windswell of 8 seconds. The energy is moderate, but honestly, for a beginner spot like this, it’ll be a bit of a mess. The wind stays cross-offshore from the W, so it’ll be clean, but the short period means it’s not going to have any real push. It’s still marked as poor surf conditions.
The morning of Friday the 28th is more of the same, but then the afternoon brings a bit of a jump. The swell builds to 6ft from the SSW with a 6-second period. It’s got a bit more grunt, but that period is still rubbish. It’s cross-offshore and clean-looking, which is a bonus. This is probably the most interesting it gets for a while, but for a beginner break, 6ft of short-period swell is going to be challenging.
Saturday the 29th is a write-off. The cross-onshore wind from the SSE at 19 mph is going to turn the 6ft swell into lumpy, choppy junk. It’s one for the kite surfers, not for the paddle surfers.
After that it drops right back off to nothing for the rest of the weekend.
Now, here’s the one that might get the heart rate going if you're an expert. On Monday the 31st of August, the forecast shows a solid 10ft of swell from the SW, but the period is a short 7 seconds. There’s plenty of water moving, but that onshore wind from the S at 16 mph will chop it all up. It’s gonna be a grumpy, stormy looking ocean.
Looking further out, Tuesday the 1st of September has the biggest energy reading. There’s 8ft of WSW swell with a 10-second period. It’s cross-shore, and the wind is moderate. It’s got the size, but the poor quality and wind direction are big caveats. This is a long-range call, so it’s promising but less certain, and it’s only for the experts.
The rest of the period fades back into the flat and poor category. This is a long dry spell, but this spot is fairly consistent, so it tends not to stay poor for long. Forecasts can change.
