The Lowdown
Right folks, let's have a look at what's coming up for the local area. To be honest, looking at the forecast for the next 16 days, it’s a bit of a slow burn. We’ve got a long flat patch to get through first before anything worth paddling out for shows up.
The early part is real quiet. From now until the 27th of August, the swell is tiny and the wind is rubbish. You’re looking at weak, short-period windswell with almost no energy, and it’s mostly onshore or cross-onshore. It’s a write-off for a solid week. I wouldn’t even bother checking the tides.
Now, things finally start to stir around Friday the 28th of August. We get a pulse of energy, and the wind swings offshore from the northwest. The break to keep an eye on is Falmouth - Swanpool. It’s a beginner-friendly spot that’s fairly exposed to the southwest. On Friday morning, we’ve got clean surf around 6ft coming from the west-southwest with a period of 7 seconds. The offshore wind is a fresh 35 km/h from the northwest, which will be ripping the faces open. The combined energy is moderate (295). This is the first real chance to get a wave, and it’s looking promising.
That swell builds through Saturday the 29th of August. The morning sees a clean 8ft from the west-southwest (period 8 seconds) with a lighter cross-offshore breeze from the west at 25 km/h. Wave energy is strong (727). This is the standout of the whole period. It’s a bigger day, so it’s more for the experienced crew, but the conditions should be pure glass. Afternoon sees it hold at 8ft with a similar wind. For a beach break like this, the period is on the shorter side so it shouldn’t be too straight. This is the best on offer.
After that, things get messy again. Sunday the 30th of August has some clean wind in the afternoon (offshore from the northwest at 30 km/h) with 6ft of west-southwest swell (period 7 seconds), but the morning is a cross-onshore mess with only 4ft. It’s a mixed bag.
Into the final days of the month and the start of September, the energy fades fast. By the 1st of September we’re back down to weak, poor surf with clean but tiny waves. The last week is a return to the flat spell, with nothing of any size and not enough energy to bother with.
So, to sum it up: wait until the 28th of August for the clean offshore winds to arrive. Saturday the 29th of August is your best bet for the biggest, cleanest surf of the window at Falmouth - Swanpool, but it'll be a step up in size so know your limits. The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, so it’s not a shocker.
