The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Falmouth - Swanpool over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s a small window of hope if you’re patient.
The water temp’s sittin’ about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
We’re kickin’ things off with a long flat spell. From Sunday the 23rd right through to Thursday the 27th, it’s pretty much a write-off. The swell’s tiny, the wind’s onshore, and the energy’s weak. You’d be better off takin’ the dog for a walk. The combined energy values are bottom of the barrel (29 to 640), but those bigger numbers come with nasty strong cross-onshore wind and short, messy windswell. Not worth paddlin’ out for.
Now, Friday the 28th of August is where it gets interesting. That morning, the stars align. A clean 7ft SSW swell rolls in, and the wind goes light offshore from the WNW. The combined energy jumps to 831 (moderate), so there’s some proper push in the water. The swell period is 9 seconds, so it’s a groundswell with decent shape and a bit of wait between sets. This is your standout. The break is fairly exposed to the SSW swell, and the offshore wind is gonna make it glassy. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, but with 7ft, it might be a little much for the absolute greenhorns. Crowds are often a thing here, so get out early. The afternoon drops off a bit, but still a decent 5ft with clean cross-offshore wind.
Saturday the 29th is a no-go – fresh to strong offshore wind but zero swell. A blank day.
Sunday the 30th sees a return of some lumpy, short-period 7ft WSW swell (energy 372), but the wind is cross-offshore and clean. It’s marginal, and the period is short at 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit weak and walled-up. Better for a longboard or a foiler.
Then we hit another long gap. From Monday the 31st of August all the way through to Saturday the 5th of September, it’s tiny again. Mostly 0.7ft to 2ft junk with poor onshore or cross-offshore winds. The energy’s pathetic (single digits to low 30s). Not worth a second look.
The very end of the window, Sunday the 6th of September, throws up a 7ft WSW swell with fresh cross-offshore wind, but it’s short period (7 seconds) and the energy’s moderate (372). The morning might have a few lumpy ones, but it’s not a standout. Monday the 7th is a near-gale offshore, tiny swell, and impossible to paddle into.
So, the real call here is Friday morning, 28th August. That’s the one. The clean 7ft SSW swell with light offshore wind is as good as it gets in this run. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too far away. Keep your eyes peeled for updates, but that’s the honest truth.
Rusty.
