The Lowdown
Right, let's break it down, Swanpool style. This forecast is a rough one early on.
For the first week or more, think flat. From now through the 23rd, the swell is barely a ripple, 0.2 to 0.3m, with wave energy in the pits – mostly under 100. The wind’s onshore or cross-onshore from the east a lot of the time, so it's messy and not worth getting excited about. It's a proper drought until things start to show life on the 24th.
Thursday the 24th sees the swell bump up to 1.5m in the morning (186 combined energy), but the wind is howling 35 km/h from the east, turning it into a lumpy, blown-out mess. Friday the 25th is no better.
The first real chance of clean surf comes on Friday the 28th. The wind finally swings around to the west-northwest and goes offshore, with a 1.7m to 1.8m south-westerly swell. It’s short period wind swell, but clean faces will be there.
The day to circle on the calendar is Saturday the 29th of August. The afternoon session is going to be absolute insanity. A 4.0m WSW swell with a 10-second period will be pumping in, with an energy reading of 2915. The wind stays fresh from the west, so it’s cross-offshore and clean. This is huge, expert-only stuff. That much swell will draw a crowd, no doubt.
Moving into September, Tuesday the 1st keeps the big wave train going with 2.5m to 3.0m SW swell and clean offshore winds. Then Thursday the 3rd rolls around with a 2.5m SW swell in the morning, but the real beauty is the afternoon: 3.5m from the SW with a perfect 8-second period and light cross-offshore breeze. It's big, powerful, but clean. Water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 19°.
So, a long flat stretch first, but a powerful end to the month and into September for those who are ready. The first real clean surf doesn't arrive until the 28th of August, which is over a week away.
