Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s get into it. First up, this is a tough stretch for Falmouth - Swanpool. The truth is, for the next week and a half, there’s next to nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny or completely non-existent, and when it does finally show some height, the wind is going to ruin it.
Right now, Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th, we’re looking at flat, clean conditions with a tiny 0.3ft swell rolling in from the SW. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual. Just a quiet, glassy sea. Not a wave to be had.
Thursday the 9th is the same story – 0.3ft of swell. Then Friday the 10th, things try to pick up a little, with swell building to 3ft on Friday morning from the east, and 4ft by the afternoon. But the wind is cross-onshore and fresh – 9 mph picking up to 16 mph – making it choppy and messy. Not worth it.
Saturday the 11th, the swell pushes up to 5ft from the east, with a short, weak period of just 6 seconds. Combined energy is moderate at 173, but that east wind is blowing 12 mph cross-onshore, so it’s going to be lumpy and poor. Sunday the 12th gets bigger, with 8ft and moderate energy (589), but the onshore wind hits 19 mph. That’s a messy, blown-out mess and likely only for strong, experienced surfers if anyone bothers.
Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th are the worst of it – 8ft of east swell but with a howling easterly wind at 25-28 mph. Strong cross-onshore, messy, lumpy. Combined energy is high (851 and 718), but the quality is terrible. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
We finally get a little relief on Wednesday the 15th. The swell is still 8ft from the east but the wind swings light SSW at 3 mph, going cross-shore. It’s still marginal and only scores a 2 out of 10 – questionable tide conditions. Not a standout.
Thursday the 16th is much the same – 7ft from the east, light cross-onshore wind, still marginal.
Then, finally, Friday the 17th is the one bright spot. The swell drops back to 3ft, but it shifts to the SW with a period of 8 seconds, giving it a little bit of shape. The wind goes offshore from the NNW at 3 mph in the morning – light and clean. Combined energy is low (105), but for a beginner-friendly spot like Swanpool, that tiny, clean, offshore day is the best on offer in this whole 16-day window. It’s not going to be big, but it’ll be glassy and surfable.
After that, Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th go back to small, weak swell (2ft to 4ft) with moderate offshore winds – clean but tiny. Monday the 20th through Wednesday the 22nd are back to flat, 0.7ft to 1ft, with no energy.
So to sum it up: if you want a wave, your best bet is Friday morning, July 17th. Light offshore, 3ft of SW swell, clean and small. That’s the standout. The rest of the fortnight is a write-off, with big onshore winds ruining the few days that have any size. Crowds are often around here, but on that Friday, with such small surf, it might not be too busy.
