The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real about the next few weeks here at Falmouth – Swanpool. Honestly, it’s a tough outlook. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off for any kind of decent surf. We’ve got a long stretch of flatness and tiny, weak waves, so don’t get your hopes up for a proper session.
The first bit of action, if you can call it that, shows up on Saturday the 18th of July. We’re talking a tiny 0.3ft of swell from the SW, with a period of 11 seconds. The combined wave energy is a measly 5 (weak energy). The wind is a cross-offshore from the N at 9 mph, so the surface will be clean. But honestly, that swell is so small it’s barely a ripple. The water temp is running much warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 66°F.
Through the rest of July and into the start of August, it’s a similar story. The swell never really gets going. We get a few days with 2ft of windswell, but the period is a super short 4 seconds, which means nada for shape. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, keeping things choppy and messy. There’s a brief moment on Monday the 20th of July in the afternoon where it goes glassy, but the swell is only 0.7ft – it’s a total flat spell.
From the 22nd of July right through to the 2nd of August, we’re stuck in a pattern of 0.3ft or zero swell. The wind is often cross-offshore or offshore, keeping the surface clean, but there’s nothing to ride. The combined energy is stuck in single or low double digits (2 to 8), which is basically nothing. For a spot that’s fairly exposed, this is a painful run. If you’re a beginner, don’t worry about the size, because there’s no size to worry about – it’s too small for anyone. The set-up is a beach, so with no swell and occasional strong winds, it’s more of a kite-surfing scene than a paddling one.
There are no standouts in this forecast. The best on offer is a couple of mornings with clean, offshore winds and a tiny sliver of swell, but it’s not worth the drive. This is just one of those blank periods for the area. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d save the wax for another time.
