Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Falmouth – Swanpool. Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – this outlook is a bit of a bummer for the paddle crew. There’s a whole lot of nothing on offer for a good stretch here.
We start off the forecast period with absolutely zilch. From Monday the 6th right through to Friday the 10th, the swell is tiny – we’re talking 0.3ft to 1ft. The wave energy is weak, with values struggling to get above 12. The wind is mostly cross-off or glassy, which would be a dream if there was any wave to ride, but there isn’t. It’s clean but flat. You’d be floating around doing nothing.
The first real pulse of swell shows up on Friday the 10th, but it’s a messy one. We get a 5ft easterly swell with a short period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 165 – still moderate, but the wind is onshore and choppy. The surf report gives it a big fat zero. Not worth even looking at.
Then, on Saturday the 11th of July, we finally see a glimmer of hope. The morning session looks like the only real standout in this whole 16-day window. The swell bumps up to 6ft from the east, with a period of 7 seconds and a combined energy of 338 (moderate wave energy). The wind is light and cross-off from the NNE, keeping things clean. The forecast says “expect good surf conditions” and gives it a score of 2 out of 10 – which in this context is the best we’re gonna get. This is a beginner-friendly break, and 6ft is getting a bit sizey for a learner, but for a solid intermediate, Saturday morning is your window. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing weird going on there.
After that, it all goes pear-shaped. Sunday the 12th through to the end of the outlook sees a lot of east swell pushing 7ft to 8ft, with energy readings climbing into the 500s and even 857 on Tuesday the 14th. That’s strong wave energy. But the wind is cross-onshore or onshore, making it lumpy and choppy. The period is short, around 7 seconds, so it’s just a mess of wind-affected slop. For a beach break like Swanpool, this setup is far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s just too messy and blown out.
The final week – from the 16th of July onwards – the swell drops right back off to tiny bits of 0.3ft to 2ft. The energy is barely a whisper again. It’s clean, but there’s nothing to ride. A long dry spell.
So, bottom line: if you’re desperate, Saturday the 11th morning is your only real shot. The rest of the 16 days? You’re better off fixing your dings or taking a long walk.
Rusty.
