The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for our little slice of the coast.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window is looking pretty grim for anything worth paddling out for. We’ve got a long, dry spell ahead. The first real chance of even a mediocre wave doesn’t show up until Monday the 20th, and even then it’s a struggle. That’s a full week of flat or junk to get through.
The water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing weird going on there.
Let’s start with Falmouth - Swanpool. It’s a beginner-friendly, fairly exposed spot that works best on a SW swell. For the next few days, it’s a total write-off. Tuesday the 14th has 6ft of short-period, weak E windswell, but it’s being mauled by a 19 mph cross-on breeze. The energy is a weak 416, and it’s just lumpy, messy crap. That pattern holds through Friday the 17th – tiny waves, bad wind, or both. On Thursday afternoon the 16th, it goes glassy but with only 3ft of weak, 6-second windswell (energy 60). It’s clean, but there’s hardly any push.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are essentially flat. Swell heights are down at 0.7ft with energy readings of 1 or 2. You’d be better off finding a rockpool.
Monday the 20th sees a tiny pulse of life. The morning brings 5ft of ESE windswell, but it’s cross-on and choppy. The afternoon is the most interesting thing in the whole outlook: 4ft from the ESE with a light 6 mph cross-offshore breeze from the north. It’s clean, and the energy is 97 – weak, but it’s surfable. For a beginner, this is probably the best you’ll get in the whole run. Tuesday the 21st afternoon has a similar story: 5ft and glassy, but the energy is only 205 and the period is a short 6 seconds. It’ll be a bit fat and crumbly.
Wednesday the 22nd morning has a bump in size to 8ft from the east (energy 499), but it’s a short-period windswell with a cross-off wind. That’s getting into “too big for beginners” territory, and the quality is still marginal. By Thursday the 23rd, it’s dropping back to 5ft with a clean cross-off wind, but again, it’s just ordinary.
After that, we’re back to flat or tiny, junk waves from the 24th right through to the end of the run. The 29th shows a pulse of 8ft from the WSW with a period of 8 seconds, but it’s getting hammered by a 19 mph cross-shore wind and the energy is a solid 864. That’s powerful, but it’s a lumpy, wind-blown mess. Kite surfers might be loving it, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a no-go.
So, the honest truth? There’s no standout here. The one bright spot is Monday the 20th afternoon, maybe Tuesday the 21st afternoon, for a clean, small wave that’s good for a beginner or someone just wanting to get wet. The crowds are “often” here, so expect company. But for the rest of the 16 days… it’s a dusty spell. When it’s this quiet for this long, the forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but for now, I’d be polishing the board.
Rusty.
