The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’ve got the goods on Falmouth – Swanpool. Let’s be straight with you, mate. The next few weeks look pretty grim for a proper paddle. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions ahead, so don’t be in a rush to wax the board just yet.
Kicking off on Saturday, August 22nd, we’re looking at tiny 1ft cross-on slop from the WSW with a weak 9-second period and a combined energy of just 61 (weak). The water is a touch warmer than normal at 65°F, but it’s not enough to make up for the messy, choppy conditions. The wind is a gentle cross-onshore breeze, and frankly, it’s a write-off. This sets the tone for the next several days.
Sunday the 23rd is even worse – 0.7ft to 1ft with a bit longer period but still straight-up cross-on junk. Monday the 24th actually sees a pulse of swell hit 7ft, but it’s from the east with a short, crumbly 7-second period, and the wind is a fresh cross-onshore that’s going to make it lumpy and ugly. That’s a lot of energy (427 to 498) but all of it is messy. Tuesday the 25th is similar with 6ft, but the same short-period, onshore mess. Not worth it.
Wednesday the 26th drops back to nothing, and Thursday the 27th brings a bit more size (6ft to 7ft) from the SSW, but the wind is a moderate to fresh cross-shore, making it lumpy. The energy is strong on Thursday afternoon (905), but it’s a total chop-fest.
Friday the 28th is the only real glimmer of hope in this whole run. Friday morning you’ll see 8ft of SW swell with a 9-second period, and for the first time we get a clean cross-offshore wind (WSW, 12 mph). The combined energy is high (754), and the conditions are clean. This is the standout, but it’s still a bit of a rough diamond. The size is over 5ft, so it’s not for the beginners, and the period is average. Friday afternoon the wind cranks up to 25 mph, so go for the morning session.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. From Saturday the 29th all the way through to Sunday, September 6th, we’re staring at a massive gap of small, weak, or completely flat surf. Swell heights are mostly 0.7ft or less, with a few days of 0.3ft. The wind is often clean, but there’s simply no swell to push. The energy readings are single-digit or low double-digits (weak). It’s a dead period for the surf.
So, the bottom line: if you’re desperate, Friday morning, August 28th, is your only real shot. Get there early, grab that 8ft SW swell with the clean cross-off wind, and make the most of it. Otherwise, you’re looking at nearly two weeks of flat spells. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, but that’s the only good news. Keep your eye on the charts, because this is a classic Falmouth lull.
Rusty.
