The Lowdown
Right then, let’s take a look at what’s going on for Falmouth - Swanpool. To be straight with you, it’s a pretty quiet picture for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak surf, and honestly, for most of this period, you’re going to be scratching for anything rideable. The first real standout doesn’t show up until the very end.
The water temperature here is sitting at 65°F, which is about 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a proper treat, feels like a warm bath compared to what we’d normally expect.
Alright, let’s run through it. From Friday the 17th right through to the end of July, the swell is generally small, often below 2ft, with short periods. The combined wave energy is often in the single digits or low double digits (values like 22, 31, 6, 139) – that’s weak stuff. The wind is often cross-off or clean, but there’s just no power in the water to work with. Sunday the 19th morning sees the biggest bump in this stretch, with a 5ft easterly swell, but it’s a short 6-second period and the wind is a fresh cross-onshore, making it lumpy and messy. Not worth the paddle.
Then we hit a real gap. From Monday the 20th right through to Friday the 31st of July, the surf is almost non-existent, with heights mostly under 1ft. There’s a day or two of glassy conditions, like Monday the 20th afternoon and Tuesday the 21st afternoon, which is cruel – it looks perfect but there’s nothing to ride. The combined energy barely breaks 10 for most of that time.
Now, here’s the one that catches the eye. On Friday the 31st of July, we get a spike in the morning. The swell jumps to 7ft from the east, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy hits 447 – that’s moderate to strong energy. The wind is a moderate cross-off from the west, which will keep it clean. Now, 7ft is solid. It’s going to be a powerful, punchy wave, and it’s definitely in the “big enough to be a handful” zone. This is one for experienced surfers only; beginners should sit this one out. The short period means it’ll be a bit sectiony and won’t have that long, drawn-out wall, but with that much energy, there will be some proper wedges to work with. The crowd factor here is “often,” so don’t expect to have it to yourself.
After that, Saturday the 1st of August drops back to a much smaller 2ft, and the energy fades away again.
So, the standout is clear: Friday the 31st of July morning. It’s the only real window of size in the whole outlook. A 7ft east swell with a clean cross-off wind. It’s a one-day wonder, but it’s the one to circle on the calendar. The rest of the time, it’s a flat spell.
Rusty.
