Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s talk in feet and miles per hour now.
We’re looking at a real flat patch to kick things off. The first surf worth mentioning doesn’t show up until Friday 10 July, so there’s a solid stretch of several days with nothing to ride.
Falmouth - Swanpool is the only break in the picture. It’s a beginner-friendly, fairly consistent little cove, fairly exposed to swell, with the best direction from the southwest. Water’s at 61°, which is about average for this time of year.
Monday 6 July through Thursday 9 July – nothing. Tiny 0.3ft swell with no energy.
Friday 10 July morning: 2ft from the east, cross-onshore, and a period of just 4 seconds – weak and bumpy. Afternoon: 4ft east, still cross-onshore, combined swell energy is weak at 67. Not worth the drive.
Saturday 11 July morning: 4ft east swell, cross-shore winds, energy bumps to 111 (moderate), but with a 6-second period it’s still gutless. Afternoon: 4ft, cross-onshore. Okay for a beginner to get wet, but nothing special.
Sunday 12 July morning: swell hits 6ft, combined energy 338 (moderate to strong), but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 22 mph – lumpy and messy. This is getting big and blown out. More of a kite-surfing setup than paddle surfing.
Monday 13 July morning: 7ft, energy 474 (strong), but stiff cross-onshore winds make it a bumpy mess. Not for beginners. The run from 12 July to 16 July is all strong east winds and messy conditions, even as the swell peaks at 10ft on Thursday 16 July morning with energy 1356 (very strong), but onshore winds kill it.
Friday 17 July afternoon: finally a cleaner window. Swell drops to 4ft from the east, wind swings cross-offshore from the west. The comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” Energy is 122 (moderate). It’s clean, but small.
Saturday 18 July: glassy but tiny – 1ft to 2ft – too small.
Monday 20 July afternoon is the pick. 3ft from the west-southwest, moderate offshore wind at 16 mph, energy 108 (moderate). Clean, small, but rideable. For a beginner at Swanpool, this is the best of a pretty poor run.
Tuesday 21 July fades back to tiny, clean surf.
So the standout is Monday 20 July afternoon – clean conditions, offshore wind, small but surfable. Everything else is either flat or blown out. For this area, it’s a tough spell, but the forecasts can change – keep an eye on it.
