The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking bloody quiet for Falmouth - Swanpool. We've got a long stretch of flat, small, and generally uninspiring conditions. The water temp is a balmy 65°F right now, which is much warmer than we'd normally expect for this time of year, so at least the paddle won't be a shock to the system.
The first session worth even thinking about doesn't show up until the afternoon of Sunday the 19th. We're looking at a combined wave energy of just 111, which is weak, with a 3 ft swell coming out of the east. The period is a short 5 seconds, so it'll be a bit lumpy and won't have much push. The wind is a light cross-shore, so it won't be too messy, but don't expect anything special. This spot is fairly exposed and the optimum swell direction is from the SW, so this easterly swell isn't ideal.
Tuesday the 21st sees a tiny 2 ft east swell with a 4-second period and combined energy of only 7. The wind goes glassy in the afternoon, which is a major positive for the cleanliness, but with that tiny, weak swell, you'll be paddling for bumps, not waves. It's a beginner-friendly break and fairly consistent, but there's just not enough energy.
From Tuesday the 21st onwards, it's a real mixed bag of tiny swells, mostly from the south with longer periods, but they lack any real power and the combined energy readings stay in the low single digits. We see some moderate offshore winds, which is the one saving grace, but with swell heights rarely breaking 0.7 ft, it's flat. There will be a gap from about the 22nd through to the 1st of August where the swell actually disappears entirely on several days, with combined energy dropping to zero.
Honestly, the standout, if you can call it that, is that Sunday afternoon on the 19th. It's the only time we see a combined energy reading above 50. Even then, it's a poor wave for this spot. For the rest of the period, it's a case of watching the tide come in and go out. This stretch is looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the consistent cross-off and offshore winds we'll see later in the period.
The long-range stuff on the 1st of August shows a 0.7 ft west-southwest swell with a 9-second period and an offshore wind, but the combined energy is only 8. It's a hope at best, but not something to bank on. For now, the only real option is to be patient.
Rusty.
