The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for Falmouth - Swanpool over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: it’s a grim picture for the first week. We’re looking at a whole lot of nothing. From Thursday 20th August all the way through to Wednesday 26th, the swell is barely a whisper. The combined energy is stuck in the weak range, mostly between 20 and 75. It’s just tiny, under 1.3ft, and the wind is all over the place – cross-on, messy, choppy. Not a single wave worth paddling for. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 65.5°F, but that’s small comfort when there’s no surf.
We finally get a little pulse of life on the morning of Thursday 27th. A 3.3ft swell from the SSW, with a 7 second period, and the wind is a light cross-offshore. The combined energy is still weak (97), but it’s clean. The afternoon looks similar, with a risk of thunderstorms but still clean. This is surfable, but very ordinary. It’s the only window in a long, dry run.
The 28th of August brings a bit more size, but the wind is howling. Friday morning has a 3.3ft SSW swell but a fresh 18.6 mph cross-offshore wind, making it clean but blown out. The afternoon jumps to 5.2ft from the SW with a 9 second period, and the combined energy jumps to a moderate 451. But the wind is a strong 21.7 mph cross-shore, creating a lumpy cross-chop. It’s not for the faint-hearted.
After that, it’s back to tiny, wind-affected dribble until the 3rd of September. On Thursday 3rd, we get a 6.2ft swell from the WSW with a 7 second period, and a combined energy of 396 (moderate). But the wind is a strong 28 mph cross-shore from the SW, with rain. It’s a messy, windy mess.
The only real glimmer of hope is Friday 4th September. The morning is looking like the standout of the whole run. We’ve got a 5.2ft swell from the WSW, with a 9 second period and a combined energy of 386 (moderate). The wind is a light 9.3 mph cross-offshore from the NNW, keeping it clean. The water temp is still a touch warmer than normal. This is the one to circle in the calendar. It’s a decent size, and the wind is right. It’s a beginner-friendly break, but at 5.2ft it might be a bit much for absolute beginners. The afternoon fades back to nothing. That’s your one shot, lads.
