The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat around here. We’ve got a long dry spell on the cards, so don’t be in a rush to grab your board.
Looking at the whole 16-day window, we start off with nothing worth paddling out for. From Wednesday the 15th right through to the end of the month, it’s almost all poor surf conditions. The only spot on the radar is Falmouth - Swanpool, and honestly, it’s a tough watch. The water temp is sitting at 65° and that’s a solid 4° warmer than usual for the time of year, so it’s much warmer than normal.
The first several days are a write-off. Wednesday the 15th has a weak 4ft swell out of the east, but it’s wrapping in with a short period around 5 to 6 seconds and a cross-onshore breeze, making it choppy and lumpy. Wave energy is weak to moderate (158) but the quality is just poor. Thursday and Friday are even smaller, with swell barely reaching 3ft and the wind staying messy.
Saturday the 18th through to Tuesday the 21st of July? Forget it. Swell drops to almost nothing – we’re talking 1ft or less. You’ll see clean conditions at times with offshore or cross-off winds, but there’s just no waves to ride. Energy readings are in the single digits or low teens. It’s a true flat spell.
Even when we get into the second week, from Wednesday the 22nd to the 30th, the swell stays tiny. There are occasional very long period groundswells from the south or southwest, with periods up to 16 seconds, but the heights are only 0.3ft to 1.0ft. That kind of long period energy would be great for the points and reefs if there was any size, but here it’s just not enough to surf. Winds do turn offshore for many of these days, so conditions would be clean, but without swell it’s a non-starter.
Honestly, there is no standout session in this outlook. The best we can say is if you’re a beginner wanting to practice in tiny, clean waves, maybe try Friday afternoon the 17th. It’s only 2ft from the east, but the wind swings light cross-off and it’s clean. That’s the pick of a very poor bunch.
For the rest of it, this area is going through a classic summer flat spell. Hang tight, check back in a few days – forecasts can change.
Rusty.
