The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up for us. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a bit of a lean spell ahead on the whole, but there are a couple of windows where things might just come together.

We’re starting off quiet and pretty grim, to be honest. The first few days are a write-off. Sunday the 23rd and into Monday the 24th, the wind is howling out of the east, smashing across the water, making a mess of things. We’re looking at a small, weak 1 ft SW groundswell on Sunday, but the 12 mph cross-on wind just ruins it. Then Monday the 24th gets bigger but uglier, with a short-period 7 ft to 8 ft easterly windswell and nasty 25 mph cross-onshore winds. Don’t even think about it. This poor run of messy, lumpy conditions carries right through Thursday the 27th, with a moderate 6 ft SSW swell but still cross-onshore and choppy. It’s a rough start.

Finally, things start to look up on Friday the 28th. The wind swings around to the west-northwest, going cross-offshore, and the surf cleans right up. Friday morning, we’ll have a clean, surfable 4 ft SW swell, and the energy is weak (144), but it’s a start. Friday afternoon gets a bit more interesting with the same clean conditions and a 6 ft WSW windswell (331 energy). That afternoon could be a genuine option if you’re keen for a session, but the swell period is short at 7 seconds, so it won’t have much grunt.

The weekend gets a bit odd. Saturday the 29th is flat as a pancake. Sunday the 30th is back to a 6 ft SW swell in the afternoon, but the wind is a stiff 22 mph cross-offshore. The energy is moderate (394), but that kind of wind will make it tricky. Then Monday the 31st could be your best bet for a proper session this week. The swell picks up to a clean 7 ft from the WSW with a longer period of 9 seconds, and the energy is getting up there (632). The wind is a strong 25 mph cross-offshore, so it’ll be blown out on the surface, but the wave shape might be okay for the more experienced crew.

Looking further ahead, the first couple of days of September are tiny. We’re talking less than 1 ft leftovers from long-period SSW groundswells, with periods of 15 to 18 seconds. The energy is minimal. Then there’s a bit of a gap until the 5th of September, when a 7 ft WSW windswell shows up, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-shore from the southwest, making for a lumpy, messy mess.

For Falmouth - Swanpool, the standout option in this whole outlook is the afternoon of Friday the 28th of August. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best of what we’ve got. The 6 ft WSW swell with clean, cross-offshore winds at 16 mph means you’ll get some fun, rideable waves, and the energy is solid (331). It’s not going to be epic, but after all the muck, it’ll feel like heaven. Just be aware the crowd there can be a bit of a factor, so get in early. The water is sitting at about 65° – a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, which is a nice bonus.

The other one to keep an eye on, but much further out and less certain, is Monday the 7th of September. There’s a big lump of energy predicted (1485) with an 12 ft WSW swell, but the problem is the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore from the east-southeast, which will make it lumpy and unruly. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one. For the rest of the run, there’s just not enough quality to get excited about. It’s mostly small, weak, or blown out.

Keep your chin up, the forecast can always change. Until next time, this is Rusty.
