The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve had a good look at the charts for our patch, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a quiet one. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat or near-flat conditions, so don’t go getting your hopes up for any hero sessions just yet.
The first sniff of anything rideable is a tiny, tiny pulse on Sunday afternoon, the 19th of July. Falmouth – Swanpool will see a 0.3ft swell from the south, but with a super long period of 19 seconds and a combined energy of just 12 (weak), it’s barely a ripple. The water’s sitting at a very unusual 67°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only highlight. The wind is a light onshore breeze, so it’s not going to be clean.
That little blip is it. For the next several days, we’re stuck with tiny waves – 0.3ft to 0.7ft if we’re lucky. The wind does offer some relief. Monday morning the 20th is a write-off with a cross-on breeze, but Monday afternoon goes glassy. Tuesday afternoon the 21st is also glassy. Wednesday afternoon the 22nd turns clean with a cross-offshore wind. The issue is the swell just isn’t there. The combined energy stays in the single digits or low teens (weak), and the swell heights are measured in tenths of feet. These are flat spells, pure and simple.
A few more clean windows pop up – Thursday afternoon the 23rd goes glassy, Friday afternoon the 24th is glassy, and we get some clean offshore winds through the weekend of the 26th and 27th. But again, the swell is absent. You’d be floating around on a longboard hoping for a knee-high ripple.
We’ve got a big gap with no surf recommendations from the 29th of July all the way through to the 3rd of August. The charts show nothing but zeros for wave height and energy. The wind stays clean for much of that stretch, with moderate offshore breezes, but there’s simply no swell to work with. It’s a proper summer flat spell.
The best on offer? Honestly, there isn’t one. There’s no standout session here. If you’re desperate for a paddle, the glassy moments on Monday afternoon the 20th or Tuesday afternoon the 21st at Swanpool might give you a tiny, clean bump, but it’s a session for your fibreglass and your patience, not for your performance. For a beginner, a 0.3ft to 0.7ft wave is safe, but it’s not really surf.
This is a tough stretch for the area. We rely on consistency, and it’s just not here. The forecasts can shift, but for now, this is a blank run.
Rusty.
