The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Hells Mouth.
To be straight with you, the outlook for the next 16 days is a bit of a struggle. For the first full week, from Thursday 20th August through to Tuesday 1st September, the surf is mostly small and the wind is a constant problem. It’s a real flat spell, with the swell dropping to a tiny 0.3ft for days on end from the 22nd through the 25th. The combined wave energy is weak, often under 20 (values like 12 or 15), so there’s barely any push. It’s not a good time for a paddle.
There is a window of slightly bigger swell, but it’s compromised. On Friday 28th August, the swell builds to 5ft to 5ft from the SW, but it’s arriving with a strong onshore to cross-onshore wind. The energy jumps to a moderate 110 to 184, but it’s messy and lumpy. Saturday 29th August afternoon sees the swell hit 6ft from the SW, with a period of 9 seconds, and the energy jumps to a strong 505. That’s the biggest energy of the whole period. However, the wind is light and cross-onshore, so it’s still a bit lumpy. The water temperature is 66°F and the anomaly is 5°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.
The northern section of the bay (the beach and reef setup) is exposed to the SW, which is the optimum swell direction, but the wind often ruins it. The best chance for something clean is the very end of the outlook. On Thursday 4th September, the swell is 4ft from the SW, with a period of 8 seconds, and the energy is moderate at 161. The wind is a fresh cross-offshore from the NNW, which will clean things up. That’s the only day in the whole 16 days where the wind is properly offshore. It’s not a big swell, but it will be the most rideable.
The biggest issue is the wind. For a spot like Hells Mouth, which is a beach and reef break, a strong onshore wind makes it a mess. On Friday 28th and Saturday 29th, with the bigger swell and strong cross-onshore winds, the setup could actually be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, as the waves will be lumpy and hard to read.
So, to sum it up: the first week is flat and poor. The second week has a bit more size, but the wind is the enemy. The only standout is the morning of Thursday 4th September, with clean, cross-offshore conditions, but it’s only small. If you’re desperate, that’s your window. It’s a long wait, but it’s the best on offer.
Rusty.
