The Lowdown
Alright, grab a seat. This is Rusty.
To be straight with ya, Pobbles Beach is in for a rough run. This stretch of coast is looking pretty flat and messy for days on end with only the briefest flicker of something bigger right at the back end of the outlook. You’re gonna need a lot of patience.
The first week and a half is mostly a write-off. From Monday 17th August right through to Saturday 30th August, the surf is tiny and blown out. We’re talking knee-high dribble with onshore winds most days – you’ll be spending more time untangling your leash than getting waves. There’s a brief moment on Tuesday 25th August where the swell jumps a little, but that's immediately ruined by a gnarly 31 mph onshore blow on Wednesday 26th. Not worth peeling the wax off your board.
Now, I said there was a flicker. Wednesday 26th August afternoon starts to show something real: a 8ft swell from the SW with clean, cross-off winds from the WNW. The combined energy is pretty meaty at 752, but those conditions are marginal – that’s a powerful, grunty wave for the crew who know what they’re doing. Thursday 27th August morning is the real standout. We’ve got a solid 10ft SW groundswell running, with a good period of 10 seconds, and those clean WNW cross-off winds again. The energy here is pumping at 1433. This is proper stuff – overhead plus. For a spot that’s been flat for over a week, this is a lifeline. If you are an expert, that window on Thursday morning is the only true session on offer. It’ll be big, powerful and will demand respect: the offshore wind should groom it clean. Keep in mind this swell may be too much for anything but a high-performance board and a strong paddle.
After that, the swell fades rapidly through Friday 28th into the following week, with only a small, clean 5ft to 5ft pulse on Sunday 30th and Monday 1st September to see it out. It’s surfable but nothing special compared to that Thursday stand-out.
Because this is a fairly exposed beach, the lack of consistency here is normal for this time of year. It tends to be a waiting game.
Right now, mark your calendar for the morning of Thursday 27th August. That's the real deal for the experienced surfer. The rest is a flat spell with a couple of tiny, clean days for the loggers if you're desperate.
