Table - best surf conditions forecast for Pobbles Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright, let me tell you what I’m seeing for the next couple of weeks around here. To be straight with you, it’s gonna be a long, tough stretch for surf. The first few days are basically a write-off for anything decent.
We’ve got a gap from now all the way through to the morning of Monday, July 21st, with hardly a wave worth paddling for. The few little bumps we get before that are tiny, weak, and poorly shaped. The combined energy is pitiful, with most readings in the low double digits or even single digits, which tells you the ocean is flat out asleep. Winds are all over the shop too, but the swell just isn’t there.
The first real sign of life comes on Monday, July 21st. The morning sees a small increase with a swell of 4 ft from the W, and the combined energy climbs to 123. That’s moderate energy, but it's still a bit weak. The wind is a gentle cross-shore, so expect some chop on the surface. Not great, but it’s the best we’ve seen.
Wednesday, July 22nd, is a standout. The morning is glassy, with a slight air and a 3 ft swell from the WSW. The energy is 87, which is still on the weaker side, but the glassy conditions will make it look a lot better than it is. It’ll be surfable, but don’t expect barrels. The water temperature is 68°F, which is a massive 8°F warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual, so you won’t need a thick wetsuit.
The bigger swell shows up for Friday, July 24th, and Saturday, July 25th. Friday morning has a 5 ft swell from the SW, with a combined energy reading of 220 – that’s moderate energy. The wind is a moderate cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit lumpy. Saturday morning, July 25th, looks the most promising for the whole period. We’ve got a 5 ft swell from the WSW, but the energy jumps to 306, which is solid moderate energy. The wind is cross-offshore, which should keep the waves fairly clean. This is the best bet for anyone with a bit of experience. The swell is just big enough to be fun but not too big for a confident intermediate. The wave period is 8 seconds, so it’s a short-period windswell, not a groundswell, so the waves will be a bit more frequent and less powerful.
Because everything is tiny and weak for so long, and the only real swell is a short-period windswell, this setup might actually be more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers on those days with decent wind.
So, to wrap it up: the best window is Saturday, July 25th, morning at Pobbles Beach. It’s the only day with a decent combination of size, energy, and clean-ish wind. Get on it if you can, but don’t expect perfection.
Rusty.
