The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get real about the next couple of weeks. It’s a tough stretch overall, with a long, flat start.
Pobbles Beach is the only game in town, and honestly, it’s a rough one to start. The water is running at 70°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – a real anomaly.
We’re looking at a frustrating gap of about 6 days with no real surf to speak of. From Friday the 21st through to Wednesday the 26th, it’s all small, weak, and messy. Swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, coming from the WSW, with wave energy barely registering (73). The wind is a mix of offshore and cross-off on Friday, but the swell is just too weak to care. Saturday morning the 22nd turns glassy, but with only 1ft of swell, it’s a flat lake. The weekend and into the next week sees a lot of cross-shore wind and choppy conditions, with the odd bit of swell trying to push through, but it’s all poor.
Things get a bit more interesting from Thursday the 27th. The morning brings a glassy 3ft swell from the WSW, with moderate energy (130). It’s surfable, but the conditions are “very ordinary” – it’s a start, but nothing to get excited about.
Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th see the swell bump up to 5ft and 4ft, but it’s all blown out by fresh cross-shore winds. The energy is moderate (170, 119), but the quality is poor.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is a big window of potential from the 2nd to the 5th of September. We’re looking at a solid pulse of groundswell from the WSW. On Wednesday the 2nd of September, the swell hits 8ft in the morning and 10ft in the afternoon. The energy is strong (985, 1467). This is expert territory, no question. The wind is cross-shore, which will make it lumpy, but the size is there. Thursday the 3rd of September has a morning of 7ft with clean, cross-off winds from the NE, and the energy is very strong (1291). The afternoon of the 3rd is the best bet for a decent surfer: 5ft, a period of 10 seconds, and clean offshore winds from the N with moderate energy (491). Friday the 4th of September carries on the trend with a clean 7ft morning and offshore winds (421), and Saturday the 5th of September has a clean 5ft morning with light offshore winds (385). The swell direction is a consistent WSW, which is the optimum direction for Pobbles Beach.
So, the only real highlight is that window from the 3rd to the 5th of September. The 3rd afternoon looks the cleanest with a solid 5ft and offshore winds. But it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it. The rest of the time, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
