The Lowdown

Alright, grab a coffee and let’s have a look at this forecast. If you’re hanging for waves, it’s a long wait, but there might be a silver lining at the end.

Looking at the overall picture, it’s going to be a pretty quiet stretch for Portigliolo. The first week and a half is basically a write-off. We’re looking at consistent weak to no surf, with the combined swell energy barely registering. There’s a gap from now until the 26th of July with no real recommendations. That’s a solid 10 days of flat or near-flat conditions.

Now, the water temp is sitting at 79°, which is a solid 5° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a standout – it’s much warmer than you’d expect, so you’ll be in boardies for sure.

The only real blip on the radar comes on the morning of Sunday, the 26th of July. That morning, the swell bumps up to 10 ft from the west, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy hits 1583 (moderate wave energy), and the wind is a clean offshore from the ENE at 9 mph. Glassy? Not quite, but it’s clean. Honestly, the swell is predicted to be too big for this spot – it’s a beginner break, and 10 ft with that energy is going to be serious. This is for experts only. The afternoon is even bigger at 10 ft with a 10-second period and energy of 2191 (strong wave energy), but the wind goes cross-onshore, so it’ll be a bit messier.

The following morning, Monday the 27th, we get a drop to 5 ft from the west, 8-second period, energy of 309, and glassy conditions. That’s a much more manageable size, but it still might be a bit much for beginners. The score is low, so it’s not a standout, but it’s the best you’ll get after the long flat spell.

Other than that, the rest of the month is tiny, weak, or onshore. The 28th and 29th have knee-high junk with light winds, but nothing to get excited about. The energy is weak – values like 32 and 23 – so it’s not worth paddling out for.

The one standout here is the 26th, but only if you’re an experienced surfer and can handle a big, powerful west swell. For everyone else, it’s a waiting game. The forecast can change, and it tends not to stay this quiet for long, but for now, don’t rush to the beach.
