The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's take a good, hard look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it's a bit of a flat spell for the most part, so we gotta be patient.
Right off the bat, the first few days are a write-off. The water's sitting at 81°, which is *much* warmer than normal for this time of year – a solid 7° warmer, so you might feel a bit of a difference if you're used to the usual temps.
We're looking at a long gap of nothing much. From now through the 16th of September, there's barely a ripple. We get a tiny 2ft swell on the morning of the 12th with clean, cross-off winds, but the energy is weak (just 25). It's barely surfable for a complete beginner at Portigliolo, but not worth getting wet for anyone else.
Then it gets even smaller. A lot of glassy mornings, but no push. The 14th and 15th are flat as a tack.
Things finally start looking up on Thursday the 17th of September. There's a pulse showing up. The morning is showing a 5ft swell from the W with only a 3 mph onshore wind. The issue? The combined energy is moderate at 265, and the surf quality is described as 'marginal'. The afternoon jumps up to 6ft from the W, but the wind rips onshore at 16 mph, making it messy. This is getting into expert-only territory size-wise (over 5ft), but with that wind, it'll be a battle.
The only real standout I can see – and I'm using that word loosely – is the morning of Tuesday the 22nd of September. We've got a 2ft clean swell from the WNW (which is close to the optimum W direction for Portigliolo), with light cross-offshore winds. It's small, but the energy is a bit better (41), and it'll be clean. The afternoon builds to 5ft from the W (353 energy) but the wind switches to a light cross-on, so it won't be as good.
Honest truth? There's no single day that screams epic. The best you get are small, clean windows when the wind plays nice. If you absolutely need to surf, the 22nd morning is your best bet for a tiny, clean wave. For the rest of the window, keep your board in the car and check the forecast again later.
Rusty.
