The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Capbreton – Le Prevent.
Right off the bat, we’re in a bit of a flat spell. The first few days are a write-off for any decent surf. Friday the 21st has some size but it’s a messy, choppy cross-onshore mess—definitely not worth paddling out for. The wait is on.
Saturday the 22nd morning is where it finally starts to get interesting. We’ve got a clean 4ft swell from the NW with a 9-second period, and the wind is a light offshore from the east. That’s a proper combination for a beginner-friendly wave. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The combined energy is moderate at 266, so it’s not a powerhouse, but it’s a fun, clean wave. If you’re just starting out or want a mellow session, this is your window. Keep in mind, this spot can get crowded sometimes.
Sunday the 23rd morning drops off to a tiny 2ft from the NW with a short 7-second period. It’s clean with an offshore breeze, but it’s just small and weak. The energy is only 67. You could get a few learning waves, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
From Monday the 24th through to Thursday the 27th, we’ve got a real lull. Swell drops to almost nothing, and even when a bit of energy pops up, the wind is all wrong—cross-onshore or choppy. It’s a dead period for surfing.
Friday the 28th afternoon is a huge standout, but it’s a bit of a beast. The swell jumps to 10ft from the WNW with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 2089. That’s serious power. The wind is a gentle cross-onshore, but the forecast says the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. This is expert-only territory, and even then, it might be a washing machine. Beginners, stay well clear.
Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th are still sizeable but messy, with onshore winds ruining the quality. The 30th morning does have a moment of glassy conditions with a 4ft NW swell, but it’s just ordinary.
The real highlight in the second week is looking like Saturday the 5th of September. That morning we’ve got a clean 4ft swell from the NW, a 9-second period, and a light offshore wind from the east. The energy is moderate at 241, and it’s expected to be good surf conditions. It’s a long way off, so don’t bank on it, but it’s the best looking bet in the second week. The 2nd of September morning also has a clean 3ft from the WNW with an offshore breeze, but it’s a smaller, more ordinary wave.
To wrap it up, the best bets are Saturday the 22nd morning for a clean, manageable beginner wave, and then keep an eye on Saturday the 5th of September for another clean session. The 28th is for the brave and the very experienced only.
Rusty.
