Alright folks, Rusty here, and I’ve got the lowdown on what’s cooking in the water for the Capbreton area.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one. The only spot we’ve got on the radar is Capbreton - Le Prevent, and to be honest, the next sixteen days look pretty bleak for a proper paddle session. We're looking at a solid run of poor conditions stretching from Monday the 6th of July all the way through to the end of the period on Monday the 21st.
Let’s start with the best of a bad bunch. On Monday the 6th of July, we see some tiny, clean waves first thing. Swell is a mere 2 ft from the NW with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is weak (64). The wind is a light offshore from the east, making for clean conditions, but the wave quality is very ordinary. That window closes fast though, as the wind swings around in the afternoon. The rest of that week and the next are dominated by onshore and cross-onshore winds from the WNW and NW, with swell barely getting above 3 ft. The water temperature is a very unusual 73° – a full 5° warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won't need a thick suit for the small stuff.
Looking further out, there’s a tiny glimmer on the mornings of Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th of July. We get that same light offshore breeze from the ESE, again cleaning up small 2 ft waves from the WNW. The swell energy bumps up a little, hitting moderate levels (104 on Saturday, 128 on Sunday) with a period around 9-10 seconds. But the size is just too small to get excited about.
After that, it’s more of the same: small, weak, and choppy. The last week of the outlook is dominated by rain showers and strong winds, with the swell pulsing up a bit to 4 ft on Tuesday the 21st, but with a strong breeze and onshore wind, it’ll be a complete mess.
This is one of those rare extended flat spells for the area. When the swell is this small and the wind is so consistently onshore, the setup here looks more interesting for a kite than a surfboard. I wouldn't hold your breath.
Rusty.
