The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down in feet and miles per hour. It’s a real dry spell, folks. The best we’ve got in 16 days is a tiny window on Sunday morning, July 19th, but that’s not saying much.
The only spot we’re looking at is Bagni Fiume or La Buca (reef break). The water is a balmy 27°, which is a huge 4° warmer than normal – that’s a real anomaly, so you won’t need a wetsuit.
The first week is a total bust. From now through Saturday, the waves are under 2ft, the energy is pathetic (4 to 24), and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-on. There’s a long 10-day gap of nothing worth paddling for.
The one standout – and I use that word loosely – is Sunday morning, July 19th. We’ve got a 3ft swell from the WSW, with a 6-second period. The combined energy hits 75, which is still weak but it’s the peak. The wind is glassy, which is a huge plus for clean conditions. The swell direction matches the optimum for this reef (WSW), so it should wrap in okay. But the period is short, so it’ll be fat and gutless. The break is inconsistent and for advanced surfers only. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so expect a few heads.
After that Sunday, it’s back to flat or tiny junk. The 21st, 24th, and 26th have clean offshore winds (ENE), but the swell is barely 1ft. The energy is a big zero or single digits. The second week is a total desert – plenty of clean water, but no waves to ride.
If you’re not itching for a session on Sunday morning, this whole stretch is a skip. Honestly, this is kite territory, not paddle surfing.
Rusty.
