The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about the local surf.
Truth is, we’re looking at a real flat spell for the next two and a half weeks at Marina di Ravenna (Canalino). There’s no good surf on offer across the entire 16-day window. The forecast just doesn't have anything rideable for a surfer.
We kick off on Sunday morning August 9th with a tiny 1 ft swell from the ENE, but at a weak 4-second period – that’s barely a ripple with combined energy of just (3). The water is sitting at a very unusual 86°F, much warmer than normal for this time of year. Unfortunately, the wave comment says it all: poor surf conditions.
The rest of the first week shows little improvement. A few mornings have light offshore winds from the WNW, which would keep the surface clean, but there’s simply no swell to work with – most of the time the energy is zero. By Tuesday August 12th we get a fleeting 0.7 ft bump with a WNW cross-offshore breeze, but the energy is only (1). Thursday afternoon August 13th sees the “biggest” swell of the whole period at 3 ft from the ENE, but the period is only 5 seconds and the combined energy is weak (43). The wind goes cross-onshore, making it choppy. Forget it.
The second week rolls in with more of the same. Most days show zero swell. There’s a tiny 1 ft on Friday August 21st and a 0.7 ft on Saturday August 22nd, but these are from the wrong direction and have almost no energy. A few offshore mornings crop up, but with nothing to surf, they don't matter.
Let me be honest here: this is a blank run that lasts from now all the way to August 24th. With the break being inconsistent, these flat spells are more normal for the area. There’s no standout, no reason to paddle out. The setup here is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now.
Keep the board in the car, but save the wax. Forecasts can always change.
