The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about the local surf scene. I’ve had a good look at the charts for our region, and I’m sorry to say, it’s a real flat spell ahead. We’re looking at a long stretch of quiet water, so don’t rush to wax up just yet.

The first session we can even consider is on the morning of Friday, August 7th, at Bogliasco. Now, don’t get your hopes up. We’re talking about a tiny 1.0ft SW swell, with a short period of 7 seconds. The energy is weak, just 8 (8) on the scale. The only saving grace is that the wind is glassy out of the NNE at 3 mph, which will keep the surface clean. The water is a balmy 83°, which is a whopping 7° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a real anomaly. But sadly, the surf itself is just too poor to recommend. The wind shifts onshore by the afternoon, so that’s that.

We then slip into a long, dry gap. From Saturday the 8th all the way through Sunday the 16th of August, the forecast is pretty much empty. We get a few tiny bumps – a 0.7ft here, a 0.3ft there – but nothing that holds any real energy or shape. The swell heights are pathetic, the periods are short, and the combined energy readings are mostly in the single digits or zero. It’s a total blank run. For a spot like this, a quiet period isn’t unusual, but it still stings.

Tuesday, August 18th, brings a risk of thunderstorms and a messy 0.3ft swell from the SE, with onshore winds. Not worth a paddle.

There’s a little flicker of hope on the morning of Friday, August 21st. We get a 1ft SW groundswell, with a much better period of 9 seconds. The combined energy finally climbs to 26 (26), which is still weak, but it’s the best we’ll see. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the NNE at 3 mph, promising clean conditions. This is the only real standout in the whole 16 days, but it’s still a very small wave. It’s a long-range call, so take it with a pinch of salt, but if you’re desperate, it’s the one morning to keep an eye on.

After that, it fades back to nothing. So there you have it. A long wait for a tiny, clean window. Hang tight, forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a tough stretch.

Rusty.
