The Lowdown
Rightio, Rusty here, and I’ve had a good look at the Bogliasco stretch for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s a pretty quiet run. The water’s sitting at a very unusual 81°, which is 8° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s seriously out of whack. But the wave energy just isn’t backing it up.
The whole 16-day window is mostly flat or tiny. You’re looking at a long stretch of nothing from now through to the 8th of September, with swell heights barely reaching 1ft and weak combined energy readings mostly below 10 (like 8 and 2). There’s no point paddling out for that. It’s poor.
Things finally wake up a touch on Wednesday the 9th of September. It’s nothing to get too excited about – a pulse of south swell pushes in at just over 3ft with a period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy hits 77, which is still weak. But the wind is offshore from the north at 15 km/h in the morning, so it’ll be clean if you’re desperate for a paddle. The afternoon stays rideable with a 2ft SW swell (8-second period, 74 energy) and a cross-offshore breeze.
After that, we’re back into the doldrums. Saturday the 12th of September offers a flicker: 2ft SW swell off a 10 km/h north offshore wind in the morning, but the energy is only 49 and the period is short at 7 seconds. Afternoon goes glassy with WSW wind, but the swell drops to about 2ft.
Honestly, for the whole window, the best on offer is Wednesday the 9th. It’s the only time the swell size isn’t completely flat, and you’ve got offshore wind to keep the surface clean. But it’s a weak, short-period swell, and the break is only fairly consistent and sometimes crowded. Don’t expect magic. If you’re a beginner, this is too small to even bother with. For everyone else, it’s a low-energy, one-star kind of day.
