The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’.
Honestly, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it—this is a flat spell. Bogliasco is looking at a long, quiet run with hardly any energy for the next couple of weeks. If you’re aching for a paddle, you’ll be waiting until mid-August for the first real chance to get wet.
The whole first week and a half is pretty much a write-off. From Tuesday, 4th August right through to the morning of Saturday, 15th August, there’s no surf worth mentioning. You’ll see a few tiny bumps in the data, but we’re talking 0.3ft to 1ft stuff with combined swell energy barely scraping into double digits (1 to 25). The wind does swing offshore or glassy at times, especially on the mornings of the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th, but with no swell to push it, it’s just a flat, clean ocean. Not a single wave to ride.
Now, the standout—and I mean the *only* standout—arrives on Saturday morning, 15th August. That’s your best bet. Bogliasco (Italy) will see a little bump in swell: 3ft coming from the SSW with a period of 5 seconds. The combined swell energy hits 56, which is still on the weak side, but it’s the most we’ve seen. The wind is offshore from the north at 6 mph, keeping things clean. The tide and sandbar might just line up for a few small, fun waves. It’s not going to be epic, but it’s surfable after a long drought. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The surf quality drops off again that afternoon with a cross-onshore wind messing up the 2ft leftovers. Sunday morning, 16th August, has 3ft from the S (period 6 seconds, energy 67) but a cross-shore wind kills it. After that, the swell fades out again fast.
So, bottom line: if you’re desperate, mark your calendar for Saturday morning, 15th August. It’s your only real window. The rest of the 16 days is a whole lot of flat, clean, and disappointing.
Rusty.
