The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be real with you about the surf situation for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, looking at the whole 16-day window, it's pretty flat out there. We've got a long stretch of nothing happening for days on end. The first couple of days have some tiny bumps, but the real story is a big gap of no surf from around the 3rd of August through to the 5th, and then again on the 8th and 9th of August. We're talking serious downtime.
Let's start with what little we have. For the morning of Thursday the 30th of July, we're looking at Bogliasco. The swell is a tiny 0.33 ft out of the south, with a period of just 6 seconds. Combined wave energy is a weak (1). The wind is glassy from the NNE at 3 mph, so the surface will be clean, but with zero size, there's nothing to ride. Water temp is 81.3°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year. Friday and Saturday offer similar tiny dribbles – 0.66 ft and 1.64 ft at best – with glassy mornings, but it’s all just ankle-biters.
By the 10th of August, Monday, we get a little blip. The morning has a 1.31 ft SSW swell, and the energy picks up slightly to (11). Winds are glassy from the ESE at 3 mph, so it'll be clean. That afternoon the swell bumps up to 1.97 ft from the south, period of 5 seconds, with energy hitting (39). But the wind goes onshore from the SSE at 6 mph, so it'll get messy. By the 12th of August, the wind goes offshore from the north at 9 mph with a 0.33 ft SW swell and an 8-second period, making it clean but still ridiculously small.
So, to put it bluntly, there are no standouts here. There is no break with any decent size or power. For a beginner, anything over 4.92 ft is too big, but we never get close to that – the biggest we see is 1.97 ft. It’s pretty normal for this area to have a blank run like this, with nothing consistent building. For kite surfers, even the meager swell isn’t enough to get excited about with the wind profiles we see.
This is a time to clean the wax off your boards and watch the swell charts. It can’t stay this poor forever.
