The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's chew the fat on the local surf scene. I'm looking at the charts for the next couple of weeks and, honestly, it's a bit of a slow burn. There are a few moments of hope, so let's get into it.
The first real chance for anything decent arrives on Friday afternoon, the 21st of August. I know we've been staring at flat, choppy slop all week, but Friday afternoon flips the script. The swell bumps up to 5 ft out of the southwest, and the real kicker is the wind – it goes glassy. For a spot like Bogliasco, that’s prime. So there won't be a bump on the water; just clean, lined-up waves. The combined energy hits 267, which is serious enough to get you hooting. Now, a heads up for you beginners, 5 ft is getting up there, so maybe watch from the beach first. The water is sitting at a very unusual 84°, which is much warmer than you’d expect for this time of year. That's your standout session in a fairly quiet period.
After that, it's a frustrating run of small, onshore junk from Saturday through most of the following week. We're looking at a whole lot of nothing burgers with a side of risk of thunderstorms. The swell dips below 3 ft, and the wind is messy.
Now, looking way out to the start of September – the 1st and 2nd. A new little pulse of southeast swell tries to show up. Swell heights are only around 2 ft, so it's micro stuff, but the wind is clean, offshore, and glassy. If you are desperate for a paddle, this might give you a few tiny, clean peelers on the sandbar, but don't expect much. The energy is very weak.
So to sum it up, if you want a wave, your best bet is to pencil in Friday afternoon, the 21st of August, when the southwest swell and glassy conditions at Bogliasco come together. Everything else is a long wait for small, clean dribbles.
Rusty.
