The Lowdown
Yo, it’s Rusty. Let me tell you about the next two weeks at Bogliasco in feet and fahrenheit.
Honestly, mate, it’s a total bust. There’s a huge dry spell from now all the way through to the morning of Saturday the 22nd of August. That’s more than a week of flat or junk surf. The wave energy is either non-existent or pitifully weak, and the wind is mostly kicking up ripples or blowing straight onshore. No point even looking at it.
The only window that’s even worth a mention is the morning of Saturday the 22nd of August. It’s glassy – dead calm – which is always a big plus for clean waves. The swell is a tiny 3ft from the SSW, with a combined energy of just 91, which is weak. The period is short at 7 seconds, so it’s going to be weak and crumbly. It’s described as "surfable but ordinary". Being 3ft, it’s fine for beginners, but don’t expect much push. The crowds are only sometimes there, so on a glassy morning you could have a few close-outs to yourself. The water temp is a very unusual 84°F, which is about 7°F warmer than normal for this time of year – feels like a warm bath, but it won’t make the waves better.
After that, it’s a total write-off. The rest of the run into the end of the month and through to the 31st is flat. Swells barely reach 1ft, winds are onshore or cross-shore, and the conditions are ordinary. A couple of mornings have a clean offshore breeze, like on the 27th of August, but the swell is only 1ft – you can’t surf that.
The last few days of the month are completely flat. Zero energy. If you’re keen on kite-surfing, the afternoons around the 20th might have some 4ft to 5ft of onshore bump with a Southerly wind, but for a paddle surfer? Nothing doing. Better luck next forecast. Rusty.
