The Lowdown
Well, folks, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a paddle. We’ve got a long, dry spell ahead at Bogliasco, with barely a whisper of decent surf until the very end of the run.
Right now, through the rest of this week and into next, the story is tiny, weak, and often messy. The water is sitting at a toasty 84°, which is a good 7° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a seriously warm anomaly, and you’ll feel it.
For the first week, from Monday the 17th through to Wednesday the 27th of August, it’s a total write-off. We’re talking swell heights mostly under 3 ft, with short, weak periods (4 to 8 seconds) and combined swell energy barely cracking 34 (34). The winds are all over the place, often cross-shore or onshore, keeping things choppy and uninviting. There’s a glimmer of a clean session on Saturday the 22nd morning, with a 4 ft SSW swell and a light offshore wind (NNE, 6 mph), but the guidance gives it a poor rating – it’s just not enough juice to get excited about. The energy is still only 162 (162) – moderate at best.
Then the real gap hits. From Sunday the 23rd of August right through Friday the 28th, it’s almost completely flat. Swell heights drop to 0.3 ft or 0.7 ft, with energy down to single digits. You’d be better off finding a pool.
The only faint hope comes on Saturday the 29th of August. The morning brings a 5 ft swell from the SE, with a 6-second period, clean offshore winds from the N at 6 mph, and combined energy of 171 (171). It’s still only rated as "surfable but very ordinary" – not a standout. The afternoon jumps to a 8 ft SSE swell with 1035 (1035) energy, but it’s onshore and messy, pushing it into marginal territory. Too big for beginners, and the wind won’t do it any favours.
Honestly, there’s nothing here to recommend. The entire 16-day window is a blank. For an area where Bogliasco is normally fairly consistent, this is a rough patch. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d leave the board at home.
Rusty.
