The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, this is a quiet stretch for the Bogliasco sandbar. The overall pattern is one of very small, low-energy surf. We’re looking at a long gap of flat days right at the start, with nothing worth paddling out for on Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th of July. The swell is just too weak and the period is too short to get anything going. In fact, the combined wave energy is a measly 2 (Friday morning) and 2 (Friday afternoon), which is barely a ripple.
Saturday the 25th stays flat, and while Sunday the 26th shows a tiny 2ft swell from the SE, the period is a short 5 seconds and the energy is only 21. It’s still poor. The wind is cross-onshore, so it’s not going to be clean.
Monday the 27th of July is the best we’ve got on offer. The morning brings a 2ft swell from the SW with a 6-second period, and the combined energy is 42. It’s still small, but the real highlight is the wind – it’s clean off the NE (cross-offshore), which will keep the surface smooth. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. For a small sandbar, this is the one session to aim for if you’re really desperate. Don’t expect much, but it’s the only window with clean conditions. Crowds are possible here.
After that, we’re back into a flat spell. The combined energy drops to 14 on Tuesday the 28th, and then it’s all under 12 for the rest of the week. Sunday the 2nd of August shows a little bump: a 3ft SSW swell with a 6-second period and an energy of 42 in the morning. The wind is glassy from the NNE. Again, small, but glassy. That’s the only other standout in the whole 16 days.
The second week is more of the same – tiny waves, poor energy, and mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds. Nothing to get excited about. This is a real Summer flat spell for Bogliasco. If you’re a kiter, the small onshore wind days might be more interesting than paddle surfing, but for a surfer, it’s a long wait. The forecasts can always change, but right now, mark Monday the 27th and Sunday the 2nd as your best, albeit small, chances.
Rusty.
