Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be honest: the next two weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. The first week, from July 9th through the 16th, is a total bust—tiny, weak swell with combined energy barely hitting single digits (between 1 and 8). You’re looking at ankle-to-knee-high slop, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore, so it’s going to be choppy and frustrating. The water is running at 78°F, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least it’s a nice swim.
The only spot we’ve got is Bogliasco, a sandbar that’s fairly consistent but rarely offers anything worth paddling out for. The optimum swell direction is from the south, and the little swell we do see is mostly from the south-southwest or south-southeast, so the direction isn’t completely wrong, but the size is just pathetic. It’s a beginner-friendly break, so if you’re learning to stand up on a foamie in ankle-deep dribble, go for it, but don’t expect a real wave.
We finally get a minor pulse of energy on the morning of July 22nd. Swell bumps up to 3 ft from the SSW with a period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy hits 45 (moderate energy). The wind is offshore from the north at 10 mph, so conditions will be clean. That afternoon, the swell ticks up to 3 ft from the same direction, but the wind swings cross-onshore, so it’ll get messy. The morning of the 22nd is your best shot in the entire 16-day window: a clean, small wave for beginners or longboarders. It’s nothing to get excited about, but it’s the only thing on offer.
After that, it drops back into nothing. The 23rd has a tiny 1.0 ft pulse in the morning, but it’s weak. The rest of the period is flat. Truth is, for this area, a blank run like this isn’t unusual—forecasts can change, but right now, the surf is just not happening.
Rusty out.
