The Lowdown
Righto, Rusty here with the lowdown. It’s a slow start for the region, so listen up.
The first few days are a total dud. The first real window opens on the morning of Friday, August 21st. The swell is a short-period 5ft from the SW, but the wind is dead calm – glass. That’s a golden ticket for clean surf. The combined energy is a moderate 349. Water temp is a balmy 84°, which is 7° warmer than normal – that’s very unusual for this time of year, so definitely ditch the thick rubber. The spot is Bogliasco, a sandbar in the Genoa area. It’s fairly consistent and faces south, so it picks up the swell nicely.
Friday afternoon goes a bit lumpy with onshore wind, so the morning is the session to aim for. Saturday the 22nd offers a cleaner 5ft from the SSW with a light offshore breeze. It’s surfable but nothing special, with energy down to 213.
Then the dry spell hits. From Sunday the 23rd right through to Thursday the 28th of August, it’s near flat, with waves under 1ft and no energy. That’s a six-day stretch of zero options.
Now, for the brave. Friday the 28th of August fires up with a 10ft SW swell and a huge combined energy of 1888. That is powerful surf. But it comes with a strong onshore wind from the SSE at 9 mph, which will turn it into a washing machine. At nearly 10ft, this is expert territory, and with the onshore wind, the sandbar at Bogliasco will be a mess – better suited for kite surfing than paddling. The afternoon drops to 7ft but with even stronger onshore wind.
Saturday the 29th of August cleans up with a 3ft SSW swell and a gentle offshore breeze, energy at 117. It’s surfable but ordinary, a fun clean-up session for a small board.
From the 30th of August into early September, it’s tiny but clean with offshores or glass. The best of that run is the afternoon of September 2nd, with a 3ft SSW, light offshore, and energy of 54. Clean but small.
The one to circle is the morning of Friday, August 21st. That glassy, clean 5ft SW swell offers the best quality surf in the entire 16-day window. Not a monster, but perfect conditions for a long, smooth session.
Get on it for that Friday glass-off. Don't risk the big, messy stuff later on.
Rusty.
