The Lowdown
Righto, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the next sixteen days for our stretch of coast. I’ll be straight with you – it’s looking pretty skinny for most of the run. We're going to have to be patient and pick our moments.
The water’s sitting at 83.3° and that’s a solid seven degrees warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a big deal, makes the early morning paddles feel a whole lot better, even if the waves are lacking.
The first real chance to get wet is Saturday the 22nd. Friday is a complete write-off – we’ve got a stormy onshore mess and the swell’s all over the place, not worth your time. Saturday morning actually looks okay. We’ve got a cross-off wind with 4.9ft of SSW swell and a period around 8 seconds. It’s not going to blow your mind, but the conditions will clean it up. The energy reading is moderate at 247. The afternoon drops off to 3.6ft but goes glassy, which is lovely, but there’s not much push behind it. This is our first little window.
Then it just fades away. Sunday the 23rd through Thursday the 27th is a flat spell. We’re talking ankle-biters at best, with the energy dropping to almost nothing. There’s a long stretch of quiet water here, so if you’re itching for a surf, this is the time to fix your gear or go for a paddle. The swell shows its face again on Friday the 28th, but the wind swings onshore and it’s going to be a bumpy, uninviting mess. The energy does jump to 244 with 5.6ft, but with a howling southerly – it’ll be a washing machine out there, more for the kite crew than us.
Now, here’s the standout of the whole run. It comes on Saturday the 29th of August, a week from this coming Saturday. The morning has a clean 3.6ft of SW swell with an 8-second period. The wind swings offshore from the NNW at 12 mph, and that’s going to put a real shine on the face. The energy reading is a moderate 143. This is about as good as it gets in the window. It won’t be big, but on the sandbar at Bogliasco, with that offshore wind, it could be fun and lined up. This is the day to circle on the calendar.
After that Saturday morning, it’s back to the doldrums. Small, weak, and messy. The following week is all about tiny leftovers in the 1.3ft to 2.3ft range, mostly with some sort of cross or onshore wind. There’s a brief nod to some S/SSE energy right at the start of September, but it’s still small and the winds are fickle. Nothing comes together for a proper session in that second week.
So, overall: the one to make the most of is Saturday the 29th morning. If you can get out then, you’ve got the best of a pretty flat couple of weeks. The long-range stuff into the first days of September is promising but it's too far out to be certain, and given how things look, I’d grab what you can when it comes.
Take it easy.
