The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’re looking at the Bogliasco forecast and, honestly, it’s a pretty quiet stretch. The water is sitting at 82°F right now, which is about 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s much warmer than normal, so you can leave the spring suit at home.

Right now, through the end of July and into the first week of August, there’s barely a ripple. For the rest of this week and the first few days of August, we’re looking at a major flat spell. The combined wave energy is mostly a measly 1 to 14 (weak energy), with a few days of total zero. The swell is tiny, mostly 0.3ft to 2ft, and the period is short, under 8 seconds. There’s nothing to get excited about. The wind does go glassy or offshore on a few mornings, but there’s simply no swell to clean up.

There’s a gap of almost no surf until the second week of August. The first real hint of something comes on the morning of Sunday, August 10th. The swell picks up slightly to 3ft from the SSW with a period of 6 seconds, and the wind is offshore from the North. The combined energy reaches 48 (still weak). It’s still poor surf, but it’s the best looking window in the whole run. The morning of Tuesday, August 12th also shows a clean 2ft from the SW with a period of 8 seconds and a 45 energy reading, with glassy conditions. That could be a dawny session.

The standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of August 10th. The 3ft SSW swell with 6-second period and offshore wind gives you the cleanest, most rideable waves of the 16 days. The crowd is only “sometimes” an issue, but for a spot that’s fairly consistent and exposed to the south, you might have it to yourself. The other option is the morning of August 12th, with 2ft SW swell, glassy wind, and an 8-second period that’ll hold the wave face a little better.

For the rest of the 16 days, the surf is basically non-existent. The period is so short and the swell so small that it’s barely worth paddling out. If you’re desperate, the 10th or 12th mornings are your only shot.

Stay patient, folks. The forecast is a dud, but it tends not to stay this flat forever.

Rusty.
