The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this stretch is a tough one for anyone chasing waves. The next two weeks are looking mostly flat and pretty uninspiring. We’ve got a long gap of nothing rideable from now through the end of September, so don’t get your hopes up too early. The water’s sitting at 26°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year—pretty wild, but it doesn’t help the surf.
The only time we see anything even close to rideable is on Thursday the 1st of October, and even then it’s marginal. Early morning that day, the swell’s up to 0.7m from the SW with a 6-second period, and we’ve got a moderate offshore breeze from the north. Combined energy is 97—that’s weak, no real push behind it. It’s clean, but you’d be scratching for anything decent. By the afternoon, it drops back to 0.9m from the SSE, but the wind swings cross-off and the energy dips to 71. Still poor.
Honestly, for the whole window, there’s nothing that gets the heart racing. The occasional 0.5m blip with 8-second period doesn’t amount to anything. Lots of days with 0.1m or less—that’s lake conditions, not surf. The breaks are all sandbar setups, and with this little swell, they’re barely breaking.
If you’re a beginner, you’re not missing out—nothing here is worth the paddle. For the experienced crew, there’s no reason to even bring your board down. The one thing I’ll say: conditions are often clean, with offshore or glassy mornings, so if you just want to sit on a board and float, it’s pretty—but surf? Nah.
This is one of those runs where the ocean just goes quiet. It happens. Forecasts can change, but based on what I’m seeing, you’d be better off finding something else to do for the next couple of weeks. When it’s this flat, even the local breaks are just water.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the charts—when it comes back, it’ll be worth the wait.
