The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Bogliasco over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it’s gonna be a real quiet stretch. We’re looking at a long, dry gap with basically no surf to speak of. The first surf we can even talk about doesn’t show up until the 29th of August, and even then, it’s nothing to get excited about.
The water is much warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 82°, which is a solid 6° above average. That’s very unusual, so you’ll be comfortable in a spring suit or maybe just boardshorts.
So, for the first few days, Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th, forget it. Tiny dribbles. The swell is barely a ripple, with combined energy readings in the single digits (5 to 29). The wind is a mixed bag, but there’s just no wave to work with.
We get a bit of a pulse on Saturday the 29th. The morning shows a 6ft SSW swell (7 seconds) hitting the sandbar. The combined energy jumps to 482, which is moderate. But here’s the kicker – the wind is a cross-onshore SE breeze at 9 mph, making it choppy and messy. The wave comment says “poor surf conditions,” and that’s the truth. The afternoon drops back to 3ft with light cross-onshore wind. It’s not worth paddling out for.
Sunday the 30th has a weak 3ft SSW swell with a clean cross-offshore NE breeze at 3 mph in the morning. The combined energy is only 49. It’d be glassy and clean, but there’s just no power in the water. The waves would be soft and weak.
From Monday the 31st right through to the 10th of September, it’s almost a complete flat spell. The swell height is either zero or 0.3ft, and combined energy is in the single digits. There’s a few mornings with glassy or clean offshore winds, like on the 7th of September (1.0ft SW swell, 8 seconds, 13 energy) and the 8th of September (1ft SW swell, 9 seconds, 27 energy), but these are barely ankle-biters. The longer period on the 8th and 9th (9 seconds) suggests a bit more shape, but the size just isn’t there.
Honestly, the best on offer is probably the Saturday morning of the 29th for the biggest swell, but the wind kills it. If you’re desperate, the Sunday morning of the 30th will be cleanest, but wafer-thin. For the rest of the window, save your energy. The forecast can always change, but as it stands, this is a classic blank run for this area.
Stay patient, Rusty.
