The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for the Bogliasco area over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the first ten days or so are looking pretty damn flat. We’ve got a run of tiny, weak swells that just aren’t going to get you out of bed. From Tuesday the 28th of July right through to the morning of Friday the 7th of August, the waves are barely a whisper. The combined swell energy is sitting in the single digits or low teens – that’s practically nothing (8, 6, 1, 0... you get the picture). There are a few glassy mornings, like Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th of July, with light northerly winds, but the swell is just 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft with a short period. It’s not worth paddling out for.
The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until the morning of Saturday the 8th of August. Finally, we see a bump in energy. The morning of the 8th offers up 4 ft of swell from the SSW, with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 147 (moderate). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the east-northeast, keeping it clean. That’s the first session that’s actually worth a look, but it’s still just ordinary surf.
Then, Sunday morning the 9th of August is the standout of the whole outlook. The swell is 4 ft from the SSW, period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 217 (moderate). More importantly, the wind is glassy – flat calm from the east-northeast. That means clean, smooth conditions at Bogliasco. The swell direction from the SSW is a good match for this spot’s optimum from the south, and the period is decent enough for a sandbar. It’s not going to be huge, but for this area, a clean 4 ft morning with no wind is a solid call. Crowds are possible here, so get on it early.
After that, Monday the 10th of August morning has a drop-off to 2 ft from the SW with glassy conditions, and Tuesday the 11th of August morning shows 4 ft from the SSW again (energy 181), but with a cross-shore wind from the east that will mess up the face. The second week is a bit of a mixed bag with smaller, choppier afternoons, so don’t set your hopes too high beyond that Sunday.
So, bottom line: you’ve got a long, flat start. The only real window of quality is the morning of Sunday the 9th of August. That’s the one to circle.
Rusty.
