The Lowdown
Alright, let’s cut through the noise. Rusty here, and I’m telling you, this stretch of coast is looking pretty bleak for the next couple of weeks. There’s a long, flat spell staring us in the face, so don’t get your hopes up.
The only break we’re looking at is Cassis - Plage de l'Arène (Cassis - Plage de l'Arène). It’s a reef break that doesn’t break often, and when it does, it’s usually a fight. The water’s at 74°F, which is pretty much normal for this time of year.
The first week is a total washout. From Friday, August 21st, right through the end of August, it’s tiny, weak, and messy. The only thing that gets a tiny nod is early Sunday morning, August 30th. You get a light offshore wind (10 km/h) and a clean surface, but the swell is a pathetic 3 ft from the WSW with a weak 5-second period. The combined energy is a paltry 66, making it barely rideable. It’s not good, just the least bad.
The real action, such as it is, shows up on Monday, September 1st. The swell jumps to 8 ft from the W, but the period is a short 7 seconds and the wind is howling cross-shore at 15-18 mph. The energy is strong (503), but the conditions are poor—a lumpy, choppy mess. That’s too big for beginners, and the short period will make it fat and crappy.
The one true standout in this whole 16-day forecast is Wednesday morning, September 2nd. The wind drops to zero—dead flat, glassy. The swell is a modest 4 ft from the NW, with a 5-second period and a combined energy of 73. It’s not a big swell, but that glassy, clean surface is a huge deal for a reef break. It’s the only time in the entire period where you’ll get a proper, clean wave. It’s the best on offer, no contest.
Thursday, September 3rd, has some clean conditions in the morning with a 5 ft WNW swell, but it’s a moderate breeze and the energy is moderate (105). It’s a solid backup if you miss the Wednesday glass.
The last few days, from September 4th onwards, are back to small, weak, and messy. Another 6 ft NW swell on Saturday, September 5th, but with a cross-shore wind, it’s a no-go.
So, here’s the deal: the first nine days are basically dead. The only real standout is the glassy morning on Wednesday, September 2nd. If you can, get out there for that. Otherwise, keep the board in the car and wait for a better forecast.
Rusty.
