The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – it’s a tough start and there’s a lot of flat days to wade through before anything gets going.
We’re looking at a two-week stretch that starts off pretty bleak. The first real sniff of surf doesn’t come until Thursday, September 17th, so you’ve got a solid few days of nothing before that. The wait is on.
The Overall Pattern
For the first week, it’s a whole lot of nothing. Tiny, weak, unrideable slop that’s not worth your time. The water is sitting at a toasty 73°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – a nice little bonus if you’re just floating around. But the surf? Barely a pulse. The combined swell energy is in the low single digits or zero for days on end.
We finally get a pulse on Thursday the 17th, but it comes with a catch. A strong, fresh NW wind (19 mph) is blowing offshore, which will clean the faces up, but that swell jumps to 7 ft with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 283, but at that height and short period, it’s going to be a lumpy, chunky mess. Honestly, it’s probably more of a kite-surfing day than a proper paddle-surfing one. The wind picks up even more in the afternoon, making it hard work.
The Best on Offer
If you’re desperate for a wave, the one true standout in this whole forecast lands on Wednesday, September 23rd.
By the morning, the swell drops to a more manageable 4 ft from the W with a 6-second period, and that gentle NW offshore wind (9 mph) will have the waves looking pretty clean. The combined energy is moderate at 185. But the real action is in the afternoon. The swell pushes up to 6 ft from the W, the period stretches out to 7 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to a strong 489. With the wind staying gentle offshore from the WNW (9 mph), this is the window to aim for. The waves will have some punch and the surface should be smooth.
So, that’s your one clear window. The rest of the period after the 23rd drops off again into tiny dribble and flat spells. Keep an eye on the sky, because for this area, a blank run like this is pretty normal, and forecasts can always change.
Stay patient,
Rusty
