The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s going on around Bandol. I’ll be straight with you—this is a tough stretch for the next couple of weeks. We’re starting with a big fat zero for surf, and it stays that way for a long time. The first read on the forecast is a long, dry spell of flat or near-flat conditions right through the end of August and into early September. You’ll be looking at clear skies but nothing to ride. The water temperature is 77°, which is a good 5° warmer than usual for this time of year—that’s a real standout, feels like summer has overstayed its welcome. But that warmth doesn’t help the waves.

The only flicker of something surfable comes right at the end of the window. On Friday afternoon, 11th September, we finally see a pulse of swell. Bandol - Les Nervis (beach and reef) will pick up a 6 ft swell from the west, with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined swell energy is moderate at 247 (moderate wave energy). The wind is cross-off from the WSW at 9 mph, which will keep the surface clean. The quality is still only ordinary, and the break is inconsistent, so don’t expect a classic session. It’s surfable, but it’s not one to write home about. The next morning, Saturday 12th September, the swell drops to 4 ft from the west-northwest, period still 6 seconds, and the combined energy falls to 100 (moderate wave energy). The wind goes light from the north at 3 mph, cross-off, so it’ll be clean again. But the waves are small and weak.

After that, from Sunday 13th onwards, it’s back to tiny, jumbled conditions or flat, with onshore and cross-onshore winds killing any chance of a decent wave. The last few days of the forecast show glassy mornings but no swell to speak of.

So, the honest truth? There’s nothing to get excited about here. The best of the lot is that Friday 11th September afternoon, with a 6 ft west swell and clean cross-off wind. It’s not a standout, it’s just the least bad option. For beginners, that 6 ft might be a bit much, and the short period (6 seconds) means the waves will be a bit jumbled. For the experts, it’s nothing special. The break is inconsistent, so you’ll be waiting for sets. Crowds are sometimes an issue, so expect a few others with the same idea. If you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your window. Otherwise, it’s a long wait for very little reward.

Rusty.
