The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you, mate – the outlook for Bandol over the next 16 days is a pretty quiet one. We’re staring at a long stretch of flat or near-flat conditions, with only a brief pulse of energy that might get you interested.
First thing you need to know: the water is running way warmer than usual for this time of year, coming in at 80°F with a big anomaly, so a spring suit might feel like overkill if you’re used to the Med.
The only real chance to get wet is around Sunday the 26th. That morning, we get a pulse of 6ft swell from the west with a 7-second period, and the energy is moderate (262). The wind is light off the land from the NNW, so the surface will be clean. That’s the best window we’ve got. By the afternoon, the swell jumps to 8ft from the west, period still short at 7 seconds, and combined energy goes up to 553 – that’s moderate wave energy pushing toward strong. Winds are still cross-off from the WSW, keeping it clean. But the period is short, and this is a beach and reef setup, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and not holding shape well. Fine for a strong paddle, but the quality is marginal. This is really only for the experienced crew; 8ft on a short period with a beach-and-reef break can be a messy, powerful push.
Monday the 27th morning still has some leftover energy – 5ft from the WNW with a 6-second period and moderate energy (255). Wind is light offshore from the north, so it’s clean again. But the swell is dropping fast, and the period is too short for any real quality. After that, we’re back to flat or tiny junk for the rest of the run.
For the whole 16-day window, that Sunday the 26th is the standout, and it’s not a high-quality standout. If you’re a beginner, stay home – it’s too big and the conditions are not right for learning. If you’re an experienced surfer, Sunday morning will be your best bet, but don’t expect a classic.
Crowds at Bandol are sometimes an issue, but with this forecast, the place is likely to be quiet. The spot is inconsistent anyway, so this blank run isn’t surprising. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
