The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – it’s looking pretty grim for the Bandol area over the next couple of weeks. We’re in for a long dry spell, so don’t go getting your hopes up.
The whole 16-day window is a struggle. There’s a massive gap of flat, poor surf from the start right through until the tail end of the period. We’re talking days on end with nothing rideable. The first real chance of anything worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Sunday, 23 August, and even that’s a stretch.
For the first week, it’s a write-off. Tiny ripples, cross-offshore breezes, and flat spells dominate. On Monday, 18 August, we get a few clean offshore mornings, but with zero swell, it’s just a flat, glassy lake. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
The only glimmer in this whole outlook is on Sunday, 23 August at Bandol - Les Nervis. The afternoon brings a bump in swell from the west at 4 ft, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is moderate, sitting at 179, so there’s some push. The wind is light cross-off from the northeast, keeping the surface clean, but it’s still only a 1/10 rating, so the conditions are very ordinary. This break is inconsistent and rarely breaks, so seeing any activity here is notable, but don’t expect much.
Because this is a beach and reef setup, and the swell isn’t big enough for the kite crew, it’s a pass for most surfers. The following Monday morning, 24 August, sees the swell drop back down to 2 ft with a messy cross-onshore breeze, so that Sunday arvo is your only real look. For now, save the wax for another day.
Rusty.
