The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get real about Bandol.

To be straight with you, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and sad for waves. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing but clean, glassy water and tiny dribbles that won’t even get you out of first gear. It’s one of those frustrating spells where it looks gorgeous from the beach, but you’d be fighting for a thigh-high ripple that closes out on you. Don’t get your hopes up for the first part of the run.

The only real light at the end of the tunnel is shaping up for the final day of the forecast period. On Friday morning, the 28th, we finally see a pulse of proper energy. The swell comes up to 8ft, out of the WNW with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 503. It’s a moderate offshore breeze from the NNW, and the conditions look clean. The problem is, with that short period and the size, it’s going to be a wild, powerful mess. This is one for the experienced crew only; it’s definitely not a beginner wave. It’s a long way out, so don't book the time off work just yet, but it’s something to keep an eye on. That’s the standout, and the only one.

Before that, the 18th of August has a bit of a pulse in the afternoon with a 6ft WNW swell at 6 seconds, but the energy is still moderate at 271 and the quality doesn’t match up. It’s going to be lumpy and unorganized. The wave comments say it all – poor surf conditions. The wind is howling from the WNW at 22 mph, so it’s going to be a washing machine out there. More of a kite-surfing day, to be honest, than a surfing one.

Otherwise, you’re looking at days like the 15th and the 19th, where we get a bit of a bump but it’s tiny – think 1ft to 2ft. The morning glass-offs will make it look tempting, but it’s just not enough to push you along. The period is short, under 5 seconds, so it’s all surface chop and no real push.

The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing weird going on there. You’ll be fine in a shorty. Just keep the board on the rack and wait for that last day. The forecast could change, as it often does, but right now, the final Friday is the one to watch. It’s a long way off, so treat it as promising but not locked in.

Rusty.
