The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Looking at the Bandol - Les Nervis stretch, and I gotta be straight with you—it’s gonna be a real test of patience. The water is sitting at 77°F which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least you won't be cold while you're waiting.
We’ve got a long, dry spell to kick things off. From Tuesday the 28th of July, right through to the end of the first week, it’s just flat. No swell to speak of. The wind is light and often clean, but without any waves, it’s just a nice day for a swim. Thursday morning the 30th has glassy conditions and a light offshore, but zero surf. That pattern holds until the end of the first week.
We finally get a pulse of life on Friday the 7th of August. The afternoon sees a 7ft W swell, but it’s short period at 7 seconds and the wind is a gusty 16 mph cross-off. The energy is moderate at 399, but it’s still labelled as poor surf. Not great.
Now, the only real standout in this whole 16-day window is Saturday the 8th of August. The morning brings a solid 8ft swell from the WNW, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 563 (strong). The wind is a clean offshore from the WNW at 12 mph. This is genuinely good surf for the experts. The break is a beach and reef setup, and with that size and direction, it’s going to be powerful. But listen, that same afternoon the wind cranks up to 25 mph offshore, making it near impossible to paddle into. The morning session is the one to aim for. This is definitely too big for beginners, and even for the experienced, it’s going to be a handful.
The rest of the second week drops off quickly. Sunday morning the 9th is clean but flat, and the afternoon has a 6ft WNW swell but with a strong 22 mph cross-off wind, which will chop it up. From Monday the 10th onwards, it’s back to tiny, weak swells and flat spells. The period from the 11th to the 12th of August is completely flat again.
So, to sum it up: you’ve got a week and a half of nothing, then one decent morning for the experts on Saturday the 8th of August. After that, it’s flat again. Keep your eyes on that Saturday morning, but don’t hold your breath for anything else.
Rusty.
