The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, looking at the next couple of weeks for our local stretch. Gotta be straight with you – the forecast is mostly a quiet one for the next week and a half. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak surf with hardly any energy to get excited about.
The first real chance of anything worthwhile doesn’t show up until Monday the 27th of July. Before that, the swell is tiny, periods are super short, and the combined energy readings are mostly in the single digits or twenties – a maximum of 60 (moderate) on Friday the 24th morning, but the swell is still only 3ft from the WNW with a weak 6-second period, so it’s not going to be doing much. So, for about a week and a half, we’re looking at a lot of flat, clean days for a paddle, but not for a surf.
Alright, let’s talk about the standout. The best window is Tuesday the 28th of July. On Monday the 27th morning, we do see a solid 8ft swell from the west with a period of 8 seconds and strong combined energy of 773 (strong). That’s a big jump, but with a fresh offshore wind from the WNW it’s going to be clean. However, at 8ft, this is really only for the experienced crew. The real highlight is Tuesday the 28th morning at Bandol - Les Nervis. The swell drops a touch to 7ft from the WNW with a 7-second period, and the combined energy is still a solid 376 (moderate). The wind is offshore from the WNW, keeping it clean. The SSW direction is the optimum here, and the west-northwest swell is a bit off that, but the size and clean conditions make it the best chance for a wave. The water temperature is about average for this time of year.
The swell does drop off after Tuesday, going back to small, weak stuff by Wednesday the 29th. The morning of Saturday the 1st of August shows another pulse of 5ft to 6ft from the west-northwest, which is surfable, but with only gentle offshore winds, it’s not the same quality as the Tuesday.
So, to sum it up: it’s a long wait for a short window of good surf. The 28th of July is the one to circle on the calendar. The rest of the time, you’re better off with the kite if that’s your thing, or just enjoying the beach.
Rusty.
