The Lowdown

Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about the next couple of weeks. It’s a tough stretch. We’ve got a long, flat run ahead with barely a ripple to get excited about for a while. The water is running about 80° at Bandol - Les Nervis, which is a solid 6° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, so at least you can enjoy a warm swim, even if you’re not surfing.

The first real chance of anything comes on Monday, August 17th. Saturday the 9th through Sunday the 16th is a real dead zone, over a week with nothing but tiny, weak, short-period swell. On the 17th, we get a sniff of life with a clean 2ft WSW groundswell with a period of 4 seconds, and glassy conditions in the morning. It’s small and weak, but it’s a start.

By Tuesday morning, August 18th, things pick up a notch. We see 4ft of west swell with a 6-second period. The energy is still weak, but it’s the most we’ve seen. The winds are light and offshore, promising a clean surface. Still not big, but it might give you a few fun little waves.

The standout in this whole period, and I’m using that term loosely, looks like Saturday, August 22nd. It’s a week away, so don’t bank on it, but the models are showing a new pulse. Morning brings a solid 5ft WNW swell with a 7-second period and a moderate offshore wind. The energy jumps to a moderate level. However, the wind is forecast to really crank up out of the WNW at 25 mph in the afternoon, which will make things tricky. The swell bumps up to 7ft, but it’s going to be wild. This is not a day for beginners. The best window looks like early morning before the wind really starts to howl. This is the only day that looks like it could offer some legitimate, albeit challenging, waves. This is more for the experienced crew.

Before that, Friday the 21st has a pulse of 6ft west swell, but with a near gale offshore wind at 31 mph, it’ll be a washing machine and nearly impossible to paddle into. That one’s a write-off.

So, there you have it. A long, flat wait, a couple of small clean days mid-week, and one more powerful but gnarly option next weekend. Keep your expectations low and your eyes on the horizon.

Rusty.
