The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've been staring at the charts for the Bandol region, and I've got to be straight with you—it's a grim run. Over the next 16 days, there's barely a wave worth paddling for. The whole period is a write-off for decent surf. Most of the time, the swell is tiny, the period is short and weak, and when there is a little bump, the wind is usually on it or it's just too small to do anything with. We're talking about a stretch with practically no energy in the water, with the combined swell energy barely cracking double digits on the best days, and often sitting at zero. It's one of those blank runs that happens more often than not in this area, so don't be too gutted—forecasts can change, but for now, it's a bust.
Let's break it down. The only spot on the radar is Bandol - Les Nervis. It's a beach and reef setup that's inconsistent and rarely breaks, which is a big red flag to start with. The optimum swell direction is from the SSW, but we aren't seeing that in any meaningful way.
Starting Monday, July 13th, we've got a tiny 2ft swell from the ESE with a terrible 3-second period—that's just wind slop, not surf. The combined energy is a weak 10, and the wind is a moderate onshore breeze from the ESE at 16 mph. It's a total mess. The water temp is a very unusual 78°, which is 8° warmer than normal for this time of year, but you won't be swimming, you'll be staring at a flat lake.
Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th are more of the same—tiny, weak swell from the south, with periods of 5-6 seconds and combined energy in the teens or single digits. Winds are light and cross-onshore, just making things choppy and messy. We're looking at 2ft to 1ft of junk.
Thursday the 16th through Sunday the 19th offers a few glassy mornings, but the swell is practically non-existent, at 1.0ft with a 4-second period. The combined energy is 2 or 3—that's barely a ripple. On the 18th, there's a little 2ft W swell with a 5-second period, and the wind goes offshore from the WNW at 9 mph. That's actually the cleanest window we get, but with that weak period and tiny size, you'd be lucky to find a knee-high dribble. The combined energy is only 24. It's clean, but not surfable.
The rest of the month, from July 20th onward, is a ghost town. The swell height drops to nothing, the combined energy reads zero for days on end. There are a few glassy mornings and some clean afternoons, but with zero swell, it's just a flat, pretty lake. The only exception is a tiny 0.3ft bump on the 25th and 26th, but that's a joke—you'd need a microscope to see it.
So, the honest truth? There's no standout. There's no session to get excited about. The best on offer is a fleeting moment on Saturday, July 18th, with a clean, offshore wind and a 2ft swell, but the quality is so poor and the wave so weak that it's not worth a mention for a dedicated surf trip. For the next 16 days, the board stays in the car. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on a few of those windier afternoons, but even then, it's marginal.
That's it from me. Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, enjoy the beach.
Rusty.
