The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you – this 16-day forecast for the Bandol region is a tough one. We’re looking at a real drought of decent surf, with only a couple of fleeting moments that could be worth a look. The setup is mostly tiny, weak, and on the wrong wind for the most part.
Let’s start with the one and only real highlight. Tuesday morning, August 18th, at Bandol - Les Nervis. We’ve got a 4ft swell coming from the W, which is a bit off the optimum SSW direction, but it's offering up the best energy we’ll see all period with moderate wave energy (102). The wind is a moderate offshore from the NW, making for clean, groomed faces. The water temperature is a very unusual 82°, sitting a massive 8° warmer than normal for this time of year – you’ll be in boardies for sure. It’s inconsistent here and can get crowds sometimes, so don’t expect it to be empty. It’s beginner-friendly at this size, but the quality is just “ordinary” at best, so manage your expectations.
Tuesday afternoon the same day, the wind swings cross-offshore and the swell drops a touch to 4ft, and the quality drops out completely, scoring a zero.
From Wednesday the 19th onwards, it’s a grim run. The swell collapses. Wednesday morning shows a tiny 2ft, and by the afternoon there’s no swell at all. You’ll get nearly two weeks of flat, weak, or onshore conditions. The morning of Friday the 21st has a pulse of 4ft from the SSW, but it’s with a cross-onshore wind and a risk of thunderstorms. The afternoon of that same day turns glassy with a 4ft SW swell and moderate energy (128), but it’s still rated as “very ordinary” – so a possibility, but nothing to write home about.
The rest of August 22nd through to September 2nd is a write-off. Swell heights mostly below 2ft, often zero, with a mix of strong offshore winds that are too strong to paddle into (like Thursday 27th and Friday 28th with NW winds at 25-28 mph cleaning it out but making it impossible) or cross-onshore breezes creating chop. There are gaps of several days with absolutely no surf recommendations at all.
So, to sum it up: if you’re desperate, hit Bandol - Les Nervis on Tuesday morning, August 18th, for the cleanest, biggest wave of the month. After that, you’re better off finding a spot for a swim or waiting for the next forecast.
Rusty.
