Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at this stretch of coast. I’ve gotta be straight with you – don’t get your hopes up for the next week and a half. The water is a balmy 78°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be cold while you’re sitting there waiting for a wave.
We’re looking at a long, flat spell starting right now. From Sunday the 12th all the way through to the 20th of July, it’s basically a write-off. The swell is tiny – a few scraps of 0.6ft to 2ft, mostly short-period wind slop from the SSE or ESE. The wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, making it choppy and messy. There’s no energy to speak of, with combined energy readings stuck at single digits for most of that time. It’s just poor surf conditions, day after day. You’d be better off on a SUP or a kiteboard if you’re desperate to get wet.
Then things finally wake up. Monday the 20th shows a little pulse, with 4ft from the west in the afternoon and combined energy hitting 133 (moderate), but it’s still rated poor surf conditions. The real deal arrives on Tuesday the 21st of July. Bandol - Les Nervis (beach and reef) is the only spot worth talking about. It’s inconsistent and crowds are sometimes an issue, but this is the standout. Tuesday morning brings a solid 7ft west swell, with a 7-second period, and clean conditions thanks to a cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is pumping at 701 (strong). That’s a proper surge of west swell. The water’s still warm, and the offshore wind is going to groom it nicely. This is your window. Wednesday the 22nd is still fun with a 6ft west-northwest swell and a fresh offshore from the northwest (19 mph), but the energy is a bit lower at 314. Tuesday morning is the pick of the entire run.
The rest of that week and into the weekend is a bit of a mixed bag. Thursday the 23rd holds 6ft from the west-northwest but the wind is cross-shore, so it won’t be as clean. Friday the 24th jumps back to 7ft from the west-northwest in the afternoon, but the wind is strong and cross-off, and the period is short at 6 seconds. It’s still only marginal surf. The following days from Saturday the 25th onward drop off fast, with the swell fading and the wind getting strong and gusty, up to 25 mph. By Sunday the 26th, it’s flat again.
So, to sum it up: you’ve got a long, flat wait until Tuesday the 21st of July. That morning is your best bet – head to Bandol - Les Nervis for a decent 7ft west swell, clean cross-offshore wind, and strong energy. After that, it’s a bit of a bumpy ride, but nothing else comes close to that Tuesday morning session.
