The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer around here.
Honestly, for the next 16 days, it’s a tough watch. There is basically nothing doing. We’re staring down a long, flat spell with barely a ripple to get excited about. The first recommendation doesn’t even show up until we’re into the period, and even then, it’s a struggle.
From Tuesday the 15th of September right through to late in the month, we’ve got a massive gap of days with zero surf worth paddling for. The water temp is sitting around 72°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – so at least it’ll be a nice swim.
Let’s be straight: the only spot we’ve got on the cards is Bandol - Les Nervis. It’s a beach and reef setup that’s inconsistent and rarely breaks, so the fact it’s even a mention is notable. The swell direction it prefers is from the SSW, but we just aren’t getting that in any meaningful way. The combined swell energy is virtually non-existent, with values mostly in the single digits (1 to 5) – weak stuff, barely a bump.
The one small glimmer arrives on Wednesday the 16th of September with a glassy morning, but the swell is a pathetic 0.3ft from the SW with a period of 4 seconds. By the afternoon, a clean 3ft from the W pops up with a period of 6 seconds and a combined energy of 49 (still weak), and a cross-off wind. That’s about as good as it gets, and it’s still poor surf. Everything else is flat or too messy to bother with.
Towards the end of the month, on the 30th of September, we see a tiny 2ft from the WSW with a 6-second period and energy of 33, but it’s onshore. Not worth the drive.
So, for any proper waves, you’d be better off finding something else to do. This setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on the few occasions the wind is up, but for a surfer? It’s a blank run, and in this area, that’s pretty normal.
Rusty.
