The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead. We’ve got a long, dry spell to start with, so don’t rush to grab your board just yet.
The first solid chance of a wave doesn’t show up until Monday, 11th August. That’s a good ten days of waiting with barely a ripple in between. For the first week, from Monday the 27th of July right through to the weekend of the 9th of August, the swell is tiny or non-existent. We’re talking knee-high wobbles at best, with energy readings rarely hitting double digits – mostly just 1mm to 14mm of energy. Not worth paddling out for.
The whole period is dominated by "poor surf conditions" notes, so I’m not going to sugarcoat it. The only real highlight, and I mean the only one, is the morning of Tuesday, 11th August. Bandol - Les Nervis (beach and reef) – that’s your spot. We’ll finally see a pulse of swell push in from the west-northwest, with a chest-to-head-high wave of 6 ft. The period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s a windswell, not a groundswell, but the energy reading jumps to 262 – that’s moderate wave energy finally arriving. The wind is offshore from the northwest at 16 mph, which will keep the surface clean. It’s a bit of a shallow angle for the optimum swell direction (which is SSW), but with the combo of size and wind, it’s the best on offer.
One thing to note: the water is about 76°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year (a 3° anomaly), so the Mediterranean is feeling like a bath. Also, this break is inconsistent and crowds are "sometimes", so there’s a chance of sharing it, but it’s not a guarantee you’ll be solo.
That afternoon the swell drops back, and the wind picks up to 22 mph, making it a bit of a battle. After that, it’s back to the same small, weak stuff for the rest of the second week. If you’re a beginner, the 6 ft morning on the 11th might be a bit much – it’s borderline for you. For the experts? It’s the only window.
Keep your eyes on the forecasts, because a blank run like this tends not to last forever, but right now, we’ve got a long wait.
Rusty.
