The Lowdown
Alright, let me level with you. Right now, we’ve got a rough stretch ahead for Bandol. The next eleven days are basically a write-off for any decent surf. There’s a long gap from Thursday 20th August all the way through to the end of the month, with nothing but tiny, weak waves, funky winds, and very poor conditions. You’ll see a few moments of clean, glassy mornings or offshore breezes, but the swell is just too small and inconsistent to bother with. It’s the kind of period where you’re better off checking the forecasts daily and hoping something changes.
Then, as we roll into September, things start to look a little more interesting. The standout window comes on Wednesday 2nd September, when a proper pulse of WNW swell rolls in. The combined energy of all swells directed here hits 394, and by the afternoon it jumps to 711 – that’s solid, moderate to strong energy. Swell heights climb from 7ft up to 8ft, with a period of 6 to 7 seconds. That’s a short period, so it’ll be a bit crumbly, but the wind is fresh offshore from the NW, keeping things clean. The water temperature is 81°F, which is a whopping 7°F warmer than the long-term average – that’s very unusual, so expect a warm bath out there. For a break like Bandol – a beach and reef setup – these conditions are definitely worth a paddle. The swell direction (WNW) is a good match for the optimum SSW, so it’ll wrap in nicely. Just be aware, with 8ft waves, this is expert territory. Crowds are sometimes a factor here, so keep an eye out.
The best of the lot is Thursday 3rd September morning. We’ve got a smaller 7ft WNW swell, still with a 7-second period, but the wind turns gentle offshore from the NW, giving you glassy, clean conditions. The combined energy is 672, still strong. This is the pick of the whole forecast – good shapes, clean faces, and manageable size for experienced surfers. If you’re a beginner, this is still a bit much, but for anyone with some time in the water, it’s the day to go.
After that, the swell fades quickly through the rest of the week, dropping back to tiny, weak waves and poor conditions.
So, in short: don’t waste your time until the first week of September. Then, mark your calendar for Wednesday 2nd and especially Thursday 3rd September. That’s your best shot at something worth driving for.
