Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks around the Bandol area.
To be honest, it’s a pretty grim start. We’re looking at a long, long stretch of flat to tiny, weak swell with nothing worth paddling out for. The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until Saturday the 18th of July, so that’s nearly two weeks of waiting. The water is sitting at 74°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing going for us for a while.
The standout window is Saturday the 18th of July and Sunday the 19th, but there’s a big catch. On Saturday morning, Bandol - Les Nervis (beach and reef) gets a pulse of 6ft swell from the West with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (251). The wind goes glassy, absolutely dead calm, so it’ll be clean as a whistle. It’s a bit of a rare event for this inconsistent spot, but it’s an option. By Saturday afternoon, the swell pushes to 7ft from the West, and the energy picks up to 388. The wind is cross-off and clean, but it’s still a short period swell and the size is getting into the zone where it’s not for beginners.
Sunday the 19th turns on the wind, but it’s not in a good way. We get a strong offshore breeze from the WNW at 28 mph all day. The swell holds around 7ft to 8ft from the West with moderate energy (395 to 603). The waves will be clean, but that wind is howling and will make it tough to get into anything. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a friendly paddle.
Monday the 20th of July is the big one, but it’s for experts only. The swell jumps to 10ft from the WNW early on, with a period of 8 seconds and strong energy (952). The wind is offshore and fresh, so it’ll be clean, but the size is too big for this break. The guidance says the swell is predicted to be too big for Bandol - Les Nervis, so unless you’re a seasoned charger, I’d sit this one out. By the afternoon it drops to 8ft, still no slouch.
After that, Tuesday the 21st of July sees a drop back to 4ft from the West with a period of 6 seconds and energy down to 115. The wind is fresh offshore, so it’s clean, but the swell is still weak and the surf quality is poor. Honestly, it’s a tough run. The first real clean, manageable day is that Saturday morning, but keep your expectations low until then.
Rusty, signing off.
