The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s be straight with you: the outlook for this stretch is a tough one. Over the full 16-day window, from the start of August through to the 17th, we’re looking at a real lean spell. There’s a big gap right at the beginning with nothing on offer, and honestly, the surf that does show up never really gets going. The water temperature here at Bandol - Les Nervis is sitting at 78°, which is a massive 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, and it’s gonna feel like a bath.
The first proper chance of a wave doesn’t come until Thursday afternoon, the 6th of August. There’s a weak 3 ft swell from the west, with a short period of 6 seconds, so it’s pretty gutless. The combined energy is only 79, which is weak. The wind is a clean cross-offshore, so the surface will look tidy, but there’s just not enough push. That same sort of 3 ft, 6-second west swell with offshore winds holds into Friday morning, the 7th, and the energy is still weak at 71. It’s clean, sure, but it’s not going to get your heart racing.
After that, the surf dries up completely for a few days. There’s a gap with no recommendations from Friday afternoon, the 7th, right through to the 10th of August. Then on Tuesday morning, the 11th of August, we get a tiny blip: a 2 ft west swell, 4-second period, with offshore winds. The energy is only 8 – barely a ripple. The rest of the week is more of the same: small, weak west swells, mostly clean but useless. The best of a bad bunch looks like Saturday morning, the 15th of August, when a 3 ft west swell with a 5-second period shows up. The combined energy is just 31 (weak), and it’s glassy – but it’s still a poor-quality wave. The swell direction is west, but Bandol - Les Nervis ideally wants SSW, so it’s never really lining up right.
Honestly, this is a blank run. The setup is a beach and reef, and with such weak, short-period swell and onshore winds at times, it’d be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on the few afternoons with a breeze. Keep an eye on forecasts, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
