The Lowdown
Alright, let's be real. Looking at this stretch ahead, we're in for a long, flat spell. It’s one of those times where you check the forecast, see a whole lot of “poor surf conditions,” and just know the board’s staying in the shed.
Right now, we have nothing. Monday the 14th is all but flat, with a tiny 0.4m W swell that’s got zero period (4 seconds) and no energy behind it. The water is sitting at 23°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's about all the excitement we get. This dead spell is going to hang around for days and days.
The one blip of real swell comes in on Thursday the 17th when a WNW pulse pushes through. It’s significant – 1.8m to 1.9m – with combined energy jumping to 247, then 290. That’s moderate, real push. But the period is still a short 6 seconds, and the wind is ripping offshore at 30-40 km/h. Clean faces, sure, but it’s going to be a battle to even get out. This is a proper expert-only day, and even then, it’s going to be wild. After that, it backs off quick. Saturday the 19th has some waist-high WNW at 0.9m, but the energy is weak and the wind is light.
The second week is mostly a write-off. Flatness rules until around the 25th, when an onshore wind from the east messes up whatever tiny swell shows up. It’s choppy, cross-onshore slop. There’s a tiny bit of hope on Sunday the 28th with a glassy morning and a weak E swell at 0.7m, but it’s short period and weak energy. It’s not worth getting wet for.
So, what’s the takeaway? The Thursday the 17th is the only real standout, and it’s not for the faint of heart. For everyone else, this is a long, blank stretch. If you see the wind howling from the east mid-next week, that’s looking more like a kite-surfing day than a surfing day. For the rest of us, it’s about waiting for the next pulse. This happens sometimes, forecasts can change, but as it stands, the surf is taking a holiday.
Rusty, signing off.
