The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Rusty here, and I’m looking at the next couple of weeks for Bandol. Gotta be honest with you, this is a tough run. There’s a big gap of flat days and poor conditions before we see anything worth paddling out for.
Right now, starting Monday the 24th of August, it’s a flat start. The water temp is sitting at 76°, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year – a nice bath but no surf to enjoy it in. We’ve got a run of tiny, weak, and messy surf all the way through to the end of the month. Lots of cross-on and onshore wind, with swell energy barely registering (single digit to low double digits). The only real note of interest is Thursday the 27th morning, when the swell height bumps up to 4ft from the ESE, with moderate combined energy (97), but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore making it lumpy and poor.
That pattern of poor, small surf continues until we hit a real gap of flatness. From the 1st of September all the way through to the morning of the 4th, there is absolutely no swell on offer. Dead flat. That’s a long stretch.
Then, things finally change. On Friday afternoon, the 4th of September, a new swell arrives. The swell height jumps to 6ft from the west, with a period of 6 seconds and strong combined energy (273). The wind is cross-offshore, so it’ll be clean. But it’s still marked as poor surf conditions, likely because it’s a bit messy for this beach and reef setup.
The true standout window arrives on the 5th of September. Saturday morning sees a solid 10ft swell from the WNW, with a period of 7 seconds and very strong combined energy (946). The wind is a fresh offshore breeze from the WNW, so it will be clean. That said, this is too big for beginners – this is big, powerful, expert-level stuff at *Bandol - Les Nervis*. The afternoon holds the same size and quality. This is the highlight of the entire forecast, and if you’re an experienced surfer and can handle heavy waves, Saturday the 5th is your day. Sunday the 6th drops slightly to 8ft from the WNW, still big, but the conditions are rated as marginal or poor.
Remember, this break is *inconsistent* by nature, so a run like this isn’t too surprising. For the average surfer, the long flat stretch makes the 5th of September the only real call, but it’s a heavy one.
