The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. Normally, I’d be buzzing to talk about a solid fortnight of surf, but this time around, we’ve got a bit of a flat spell on our hands. Looking at the whole 16-day run from now, there’s almost nothing doing for a good long stretch. We’re looking at a big gap of poor conditions right through to the end of the first week and into the second. The first real chance of anything rideable is a full week away.
So, for the first week, it’s pretty grim. From now through the weekend and into the start of next week, there’s just no energy in the water. The wind is light and variable, with some glassy mornings, but the swell is an absolute no-show. It’s basically a lake out there. You aren’t missing a thing.
The only day that even raises an eyebrow is Tuesday, August 18th. We finally see a pulse of swell show up on the charts for Bandol - Les Nervis (Bandol). This break is a beach and reef setup, and it’s inconsistent at the best of times, so this is a rare little window. Early on the 18th, we’ve got a moderate cross-shore breeze with a 5ft swell coming from the West. The combined wave energy is moderate at (337). The period is a short 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit bumpy and not packing much punch, but it’s the only game in town for a paddle. For the more experienced crew, this could offer a few messy, chunky walls, but for beginners? At 5ft, it’s pushing the limit for a session, especially with that short, weak period.
Wednesday the 19th onwards just falls back into a pattern of cross-onshore winds and tiny, weak swell. There is a brief flash of clean, offshore winds later on Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th, bringing in a 4ft southerly swell with moderate energy (149) on Monday morning. The winds are fresh offshore from the NW, which would normally get the stoke levels up. However, the swell direction is more from the South, not the optimum SSW for this spot. It’s a bit of a tease – clean lines, but the swell might not wrap in properly to make it worth more than a look.
Honestly, for the entire outlook, nothing screams “standout.” The 18th is your best bet for a surf, but keep your expectations in check. For the rest of it, the setup looks more interesting for a kite session than a paddle, especially when the wind picks up. Forecasts can change though, so don’t lose all hope.
Stay tuned, this is Rusty, signing off.
