The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m just gonna level with you straight up – we’ve got a pretty grim run ahead for Bandol. The whole 16-day window is a tough watch. There’s a big gap right now from Thursday the 27th of August all the way through to the end of the first week, with basically nothing worth paddling for. Flat spells or tiny, wind-affected slop. We’re talking nearly two weeks of waiting for anything that even looks like a wave.
The only flicker of light shows up on Tuesday the 8th of September afternoon, when a chunky 8ft swell from the west rolls in, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is right up at 483 (moderate to strong), so there’s some push to it, but the sea breeze has got us with onshore winds from the SSE. It’s messy. That size is solid – pushing into the territory where beginners will be in over their heads. It’s not pretty but it’s the most juice we see. Then again, on Friday the 11th of September afternoon, there’s a similar pulse of 8ft from the WNW with 506 energy and a period of 7 seconds. That’s expert-only territory for sure. The wind does swing offshore from the west though, so it cleans up. That’s your best bet of the entire run, but it’s a long way out – so treat it as promising but far from locked in.
Earlier, on Wednesday the 9th and Thursday the 10th, there’s some waist-high, weak wind swell in the 4ft to 5ft range, but with that short period (6 seconds) and either light cross-onshore or onshore breeze, it’s just not going to hold shape. Forget the long-range stuff for the most part.
The water temp in Bandol right now sits around 74°, with an anomaly of 1°, so pretty average for the time of year – nothing unusual there.
Don’t bank on the smaller days, either. The good windows are so far out that I’d keep your expectations low. The pattern is mostly dead, which for a spot that’s already ‘inconsistent’, is actually pretty normal. Could change, but it’s a long wait.
