The Lowdown
Alright, crew, Rusty here, and let’s be real – the forecast for Bandol over the next sixteen days is a big ol’ “meh” for a while, with a couple of wildcards late in the game.
We’re looking at a dead start. From Monday the 3rd of August all the way through to Saturday the 15th of August, the surf is basically flat. The water is a weird 79°, which is much warmer than usual, but that’s about it. We get some glassy mornings, but the swell is barely a ripple – 0.3ft to 0.7ft max. The combined energy numbers are tiny (1 to 5). It’s a long, boring stretch.
The first real pulse comes on the morning of Friday the 7th of August. A 4ft west swell shows up with a light offshore wind, giving us moderate energy (116). It’s surfable, but the period is short, so it’s a bit weak. The afternoon gets blown out.
We get a little more on the morning of Saturday the 15th of August – a 3ft west swell with a fresh offshore, but the energy is still modest (120) and the quality isn’t special.
The one to circle is Sunday the 16th of August. The morning delivers a clean 6ft west swell, with a gentle offshore wind from the NNW and a strong combined energy of 289. This is your best chance. Bandol - Les Nervis (beach and reef) is inconsistent, so this is a rare treat. The period is short, but the offshore wind will make it clean. Get out there early, because the afternoon goes cross-offshore.
Then Monday the 17th of August brings a monster. A huge 12ft swell from the WNW, with a longer period of 8 seconds and glassy conditions. The energy is a massive 1422. But this is way too big for this break. The wind and tide are good, but the swell is predicted to be too big for Bandol. This is for pros only, and it’ll be a washing machine. The afternoon gets a cross-onshore wind. This is kite-surfing territory, not paddle surfing.
Tuesday the 18th is still big, dropping from 10ft to 8ft, but it’s onshore and choppy, so no good.
So, bottom line: a flat first week, a solid session on the morning of Sunday the 16th, and then a huge, dangerous swell on Monday the 17th. The standout is the morning of Sunday the 16th – that’s your one clean, surfable day.
Rusty.
