The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Bandol over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough run. The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off for any decent surf. From now until the morning of Saturday, July 26th, it’s flat, tiny, or just plain messy. We’re talking knee-high dribble at best – waves around 0.7ft to 2ft with short-period, weak windswell that has no energy (combined energy values from 1 to 55). The winds are mostly cross-off or onshore, and the water temp is a crazy 80°, which is 8° warmer than normal – that’s very unusual for this time of year. But honestly, you won’t need a wetsuit because you won’t be paddling out.
There’s a real gap of about 8 days here with nothing worth paddling for. You’ll be watching the horizon and waiting.
Then, finally, a pulse shows up. Sunday morning, July 26th, brings a proper swell at Bandol - Les Nervis (France). Swell jumps to 8ft from the West with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy cranks up to 640 – that’s solid, moderate-to-strong energy. The wind is offshore from the NW at 12 mph, so it’s gonna be clean. This is the standout of the whole period. However, with 8ft, we’re gettin’ into expert territory – this is not for beginners. The swell direction from the West is a good match for the SSW optimum, so it should wrap in alright.
By Sunday afternoon, the swell peaks at 8ft from the WNW, but the wind goes cross-off and the period drops to 7 seconds, and the energy is still high at 691, but it’s a bit more junky. The morning session is the pick.
After that, it fades fast. The 27th is back to small, weak, and cross-on, and the rest of the run into early August is tiny again – 0.3ft to 1ft stuff with no energy, just glassy mornings and light offshore afternoons, but no wave to ride.
So, to sum it up: you’ve got one window. Sunday morning, July 26th. Get on it if you’re experienced, because it’s clean and solid. Otherwise, it’s a long, flat wait.
