The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. The next 16 days are looking pretty flat for the Costa Brava, so temper your expectations. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing much on offer, with only tiny, weak waves that aren’t worth paddling out for.

Looking at the whole period, the only real stand-out in the entire run is a brief moment on the morning of Saturday, August 15th. That morning brings a tiny 1ft swell from the N, but the real treat is the glassy conditions – dead calm, not a breath of wind. That’s a major positive for a break that’s normally exposed to the east. The combined energy is still super weak (7), so it’s more about enjoying the clean, quiet water than scoring any power. The water is sitting at 79°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so the paddle out will be comfortable enough.

The rest of the window is a write-off for surf. Between now and the 15th, there are days of zero swell, or tiny, short-period slop from the north with a period of just 4 seconds – that’s windswell, not groundswell. The wind is often cross-on or onshore, making for choppy, messy conditions. For example, the afternoon of the 8th of August has a moderate cross-shore and zero swell. The stretch from the 9th to the 14th is particularly poor, with swell heights barely reaching 0.7ft and energy values in the single digits. The only exception is a few glassy mornings, like the 9th and 10th, but with almost no waves, it’s just a flat, clean lake.

Sant Martí d’Empúries is an inconsistent break even on a good day, and for a beginner spot, this is a total dud. The east-facing exposure isn’t seeing any of the long-period groundswell that would make it work. Honestly, with the tiny, weak swell and the cross-shore winds on the 17th and 18th, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, if you’re into that. Otherwise, save your energy. The forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about.

Rusty.
