The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for Capbreton - La Pointe over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim outlook for a while. The water is much warmer than normal for this time of year at 77°, but that’s about the only positive. We’ve got a long gap of flat, weak, or messy conditions stretching through most of the period. From Saturday the 22nd right through to Thursday the 3rd of September, there’s almost nothing worth paddling out for. Tiny waves, short-period slop, and when there is a bit of size, the wind is all wrong.
Things finally look like they might be turning a corner on the morning of Saturday the 5th of September. That’s the standout window. The swell is coming from the NW at 5ft, with a long period of 12 seconds, giving us a solid groundswell. Combined wave energy is strong at 823. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the ESE at 9 mph, which should really tidy things up at this fairly exposed spot. Just a heads up, that’s a long-period groundswell, so at a beach-and-reef setup like La Pointe, it might break a bit straight and be better suited for those with a bit of experience. At 5ft it’s pushing into the intermediate zone, but the quality looks good.
The Saturday afternoon holds up too, with 5ft from the NW and very light winds, though a touch cross. The wave energy stays high at 700.
There’s a smaller pulse earlier on, the morning of the 30th of August. That's a glassy 4ft from the NW, but the period is a short 8 seconds, so it won't have the same punch or shape as the early September window. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.
After that Saturday the 5th, the forecast gets messy again with strong onshore winds and rain showers rolling in on Sunday the 6th, ruining what could have been a nice little run.
So, if you’re holding out, circle Saturday the 5th of September. That’s your best bet for a clean, punchy session. Everything else is a write-off until then.
Rusty.
