The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m lookin’ at the next couple of weeks for Capbreton - La Pointe.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough start. The first couple of weeks are pretty much a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell with lousy cross-on or onshore winds messing things up. The combined wave energy is mostly in the low teens to low hundreds (33 to 253), which is just not enough to get excited about. The water is sitting at 76°F, which is a full 7°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s pretty unusual, feels like bathwater.
For a beginner-friendly spot like this, the swell barely gets above 1ft to 2ft through the first week, and it's mostly short-period windswell. You’ll get a little bit of glassy conditions on Saturday the 18th morning and Sunday the 19th morning, but the swell is just too small and weak to ride. The best we can say is it’s a good time for a paddle or a float. Crowds are “sometimes” an issue here, but they won’t be a problem with no waves.
We do finally get a pulse of energy rolling in on the 24th of July, Friday. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the W, but it’s still cross-on and messy, so not something to write home about. The combined energy climbs to 122, but it’s still not clean.
The real standout, the only one worth a serious look, is waiting for us on the 30th of July (Thursday morning). That’s the one to mark on your calendar. We’re looking at a 4ft swell from the NW, with a period of 11 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell with some push. The combined energy jumps to 361 (moderate to strong). But the best part? The wind is completely glassy, dead calm, in the morning. That’s a rare treat and will make for clean, smooth faces. The afternoon even gets a moderate offshore from the SE at 12 mph, so it’ll stay clean. This is your best bet for the whole forecast. It’s a beginner spot, so 4ft is perfect. Just keep in mind, with a longer period like 11 seconds, it might break a bit straighter on the beach, but it’ll still be fun.
So, to sum it up: suffer through the next two weeks of tiny, onshore slop, and then target Thursday the 30th of July for the only real window of clean, surfable waves.
Rusty.
