Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a proper look at what's on offer for Capbreton - La Pointe over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I'll be straight with you – this is a rough stretch for paddle surfing. The swell is tiny and the wind is mostly wrong for most of it. We're looking at a long, quiet period ahead. The first few days are virtually flat, and even when a bit of energy pops up, conditions are pretty ordinary. The water's sitting at a toasty 73°, which is about 6° warmer than the norm for this time of year – that's very unusual, almost like a warm bath.
For the first solid window, keep your eyes on Saturday the 11th of July. The morning session is your standout for the whole 16 days. We've got a clean 3ft swell creeping in from the WNW with decent 9-second period and the combined energy is sitting at 115 (moderate). The wind goes absolutely glassy – dead calm – so the surface will be like a mirror. That's the one to circle. It's a beginner-friendly spot anyway, and this is about as good as it gets. The afternoon on Saturday gets messy with a cross-onshore, so make the most of the morning.
After that, we drift back into small, messy conditions through the middle of the month. A few glassy windows appear on Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th mornings, but with swell smaller than 2ft, it's hardly worth paddling out for anything more than a float.
Now, around Sunday the 19th of July, the swell size jumps right up to 7-8ft from the NW with a very strong combined energy (up to 629). But the wind is onshore and cross-onshore, so it's blown out, choppy, and ugly. That's kite-surfing territory, not clean paddle-surfing. The period is short too, only 7-8 seconds, so the waves will be crumbly and weak despite the size. If you're a confident charger, maybe Monday the 20th could offer a bit with the swell easing to 5-6ft, but wind is still onshore.
Overall? The only day that really delivers is the morning of Saturday the 11th. The rest is either too small, too windy, or too messy. Keep your board waxed for that one window, because the waiting game is long.
