The Lowdown
Right, mate, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you—this 16-day window for Capbreton - La Pointe is a proper drought. There’s a whole lot of nothing on the cards for the first two weeks. The water’s sitting at 76°F, which is a massive 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year—that’s seriously unusual and feels more like a bath than the Atlantic.
For the first chunk, from Thursday the 16th right through to Tuesday the 29th of July, it’s a grim run. We’re looking at tiny, weak swell—mostly around 0.7ft to 3ft, with terrible short-period windswell (5 to 7 seconds). The combined energy is pathetic, barely cracking 90 (weak energy) on most days, and the wind is nearly always onshore or cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. There’s a brief moment on the morning of Saturday the 18th where it goes glassy, but the swell is a paltry 0.7ft—not worth paddling out for. The whole period is a write-off for any decent surf.
You’ve got to wait until the very end of the forecast. On the morning of Wednesday the 31st of July, there’s a glimmer. The wind is light from the NE, going glassy, and the swell jumps to 7ft from the NW with a period of 12 seconds. That’s proper groundswell with a combined energy of 1092 (strong). The conditions are set to be excellent. That’s the only real standout. Keep in mind, at 7ft, it’s starting to push into the zone that’s a bit much for beginners, and with that longer period (12 seconds), it’ll have some punch. The afternoon winds shift onshore, so the window is tight.
For the rest of the week after that, the morning of Thursday the 31st is the only true gem. The afternoon of the 31st sees the swell drop to 6ft and the wind turns onshore, so it’s back to poor surf conditions.
That’s the lowdown. A long, flat spell with one morning of real quality right at the end. Keep an eye on that Wednesday the 31st morning.
Rusty.
