Alright, grab a coffee, let’s talk about what’s shaping up for us at Capbreton - La Pointe.
Right now, it’s a bit of a tough start. The water is sitting at a very unusual 74°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, which is nice for the skin but not much use without any surf to enjoy. That first swell everyone’s waiting for just isn’t here yet. Saturday is a write-off with poor surf and onshore winds. We’re looking at a quiet couple of days before things even start to tick over.
By Sunday morning (July 5th), we finally get a tiny window. The swell is a modest 2 feet from the WNW with a 10-second period, but the magic is in the glassy conditions. ENE wind at 5 km/h makes it clean. It’s small, and the combined energy is weak (144), so it's really for the longboard or the foamie to get that glide in. The afternoon fills in with a cross-onshore, so get out early if you can.
Monday morning (July 6th) is another scrappy option. Same small 2 feet from the NW, with a very weak energy reading (72). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the ENE at 10 km/h, so it’ll be clean enough. Again, nothing to write home about, just a chance to bob around.
There’s a real gap here. From Monday afternoon right through until the night of Saturday, July 12th, it’s a washout. Most sessions are either onshore, choppy, or just too weak to bother with. Tuesday morning (July 7th) is glassy but the swell is only 1 feet—you’d need a lot of patience.
Things nudge up a little from Sunday, July 13th. The swell builds to 4 feet from the NW with moderate energy (176). The morning is ruined by a light cross-on from the W, but it’s the first time we see chest-high potential all week.
Now, the standout window in this whole forecast is Wednesday morning, July 15th. We’ve got a solid 4 feet from the NW with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is moderate (229). That’s the best energy we’ll see over the whole 16-day stretch. The wind is off the NE at 5 km/h, glassing it right up—clean conditions, no chop. This is the one morning to circle on the calendar. The swell direction (NW) lines up well for the exposed setup at Capbreton - La Pointe. Light crowds might be possible but it’s a weekday, so you might get lucky.
Looking into the second week, the pattern stays pretty ordinary. There are some tiny windows of glassy conditions on July 19th (Sunday morning) with a tiny 2 feet and clean conditions, but the energy is just too weak (59) to call it a session. Everything else in that second week is plagued by onshores and choppy water, with no real power behind it.
Bottom line: It’s a lean 16 days. You’re waiting until mid-July for that one good morning on the 15th. If you’re flexible and desperate, the earlier mornings on the 5th and 6th will get you wet, but the 15th is your best shot.
Keep an eye on it—models change, but right now, patience is the name of the game.
Rusty.
