The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cooking for Capbreton - La Pointe over the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, we’re in for a bit of a flat spell to start. The first week is pretty quiet, with only tiny, weak swell and not much to get excited about. The water’s sitting at 76°F which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, a real anomaly that’s nearly 5°F above normal.

From the 23rd of August right through to the 26th, we’re looking at nothing but poor surf conditions. Swell heights are barely a whimper, mostly under 2ft, with weak combined energy. The wind is all over the place, cross-on or cross-off, but with waves this small, it doesn’t really matter. It’s a total write-off.

Things start to pick up a little around the 27th of August. The swell builds to 4ft from the WNW, with a period of 9 seconds and combined energy of 199 (moderate). The wind is light cross-on, so it’s not clean, but it’s at least surfable. By Thursday afternoon, the swell hits 5ft with onshore wind, and the energy climbs to 288. Still not great, but there’s a pulse of energy.

The 28th of August sees the swell really start to push. Friday morning we get 5ft from the WNW, period 9 seconds, and energy hitting 374 (moderate-strong). The problem is the wind: a fresh 19 mph cross-shore breeze from the SW is making a lumpy mess. Friday afternoon gets even bigger at 7ft, but the cross-on wind from the W is strong, and the energy is up to 630. It’s looking more like a kite-surfing session than a clean paddle, to be honest.

Saturday the 29th of August is the biggest day of the whole run. The morning sees 8ft from the WNW at 10 seconds, with a massive energy reading of 1117. That’s strong wave energy, no doubt. The wind is a gentle cross-on from the W, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy and choppy. At 8ft, this is getting into expert-only territory, especially for a beach break. Saturday afternoon drops a touch to 7ft, still onshore, still big.

Now, we do get a bit of a window on Sunday the 30th of August. The morning brings clean conditions with a light cross-offshore breeze from the E. The swell is a more manageable 5ft from the NW, period 8 seconds, and energy of 262. The report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” but that clean wind is a big plus. For a beach break, a 5ft wave with an offshore breeze is a real treat. The afternoon goes back onshore, so you’d want to be on it early.

The rest of the run into the first week of September is a mixed bag of small, weak swell and poor conditions. The 1st of September has a morning window with a 4ft WNW swell and a light cross-shore breeze from the NE. Could be a sneaky session. The 2nd of September morning is the only true standout in the second week: a glassy, 3ft NW swell from the W with a period of 8 seconds. Perfect for a longboard or a funboard, and it’ll be clean as a whistle. The 5th of September morning also has clean conditions with a 1ft WNW swell, but it’s tiny.

The real standout, and the one I’d be circling on the calendar, is the Sunday the 30th of August morning. The combination of a decent 5ft NW swell, the clean offshore wind from the E, and the fact that it’s a fairly consistent break means you’ve got a real chance at a good session. The break is fairly exposed, and the swell is coming from the W, which is close to the optimum direction. Hit it early.

Rusty out.
