Table - best surf conditions forecast for Capbreton - La Pointe over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the coming weeks.
Overall, this is a patchy period ahead for the area. There are a few windows with some swell, but the wind is often making a mess of things. We've got a long quiet spell in the middle, so don't expect much action for a while. The only break on the radar is Capbreton - La Pointe.
The first chance to get wet comes early on Saturday morning, July 11th. We’re looking at a small 2ft swell out of the WNW with a 9-second period. The combined energy is weak at 104, so it's not packing much punch, but the wind is glassy. That means the surface will be clean, even if the waves are pretty ordinary. It's a beginner-friendly spot, so it’s worth a look for a longboard or a foamy, but don't get your hopes up for anything exciting. The water temp is sitting at 75°, which is over 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that's very unusual, so you might not even need a full wetsuit.
Sunday morning, July 12th, is a similar story. Another 2ft WNW swell, this time with a longer 10-second period (groundswell), but again the energy is low at 84. With glassy conditions again, it'll be clean but small. The afternoon sees the wind shift onshore and the quality drops right off.
After that, we hit a long dry spell. From Sunday afternoon, July 12th, right through to Sunday, July 19th, the surf is pretty much a write-off. The swell either drops away to nothing or the wind is onshore and choppy, making a mess of any small waves that do show up. There are a few tiny bumps, but nothing worth paddling out for.
We finally see a pulse of new swell arriving on Monday morning, July 20th. The swell bumps up to 5ft out of the WNW, with a short 6-second period, and the energy is moderate at 140. The wind is glassy again first thing, so it could be surfable, but the short period will make for some crumbly, soft waves. Not a standout, but the best we've seen for over a week. By afternoon the wind goes cross-onshore and it gets messy.
Looking further ahead, the most promising window is at the very end of the forecast. On Friday morning, July 24th, we get a solid 5ft swell from the NW with a 9-second period (moderate energy of 354) and glassy conditions. That’s a good combo—clean conditions with some proper size. But at this range, keep in mind it’s less certain. The wind is forecast to be glassy from the WSW, which is offshore for this break. This is by far the best looking session in the whole 16 days. Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th also show some solid swell from the NW, but the wind is cross-onshore or onshore, so while there will be plenty of energy (585 on Sunday morning), it’ll be a bumpy, blown-out mess and not what you want on your surfboard. That kind of wind and size might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, to wrap it up: the pick of the period is Friday morning, July 24th at Capbreton - La Pointe. Clean, glassy conditions with a decent 5ft NW swell. Circle that date and hope the long-range forecast holds.
Rusty.
