The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, checkin' in from the French coast.
It’s a quiet start around here, mate. We’re lookin’ at a bit of a flat spell up until Thursday the 20th. There’s tiny dribble in the water but nothing you’d paddle out for. From Thursday the 20th, things get more interesting.
Thursday morning, August 20th, we start to see a pulse of life. Capbreton - La Pointe picks up a 4ft NW groundswell with a period of 11 seconds. That’s enough energy (263 combined swell energy) to roll in some proper lines, and with glassy conditions, the morning session will actually have some nice shape. The water here is about 76°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – a real treat.
Friday morning, August 21st, is the standout of the first week. The swell holds at 4ft from the NW with a 10-second period, delivering moderate energy (387). That’s the biggest we’ve seen so far, and the wind is a light 3 mph from the north creating glassy perfection. This is your call. Expect good surf conditions and clean peaks peeling down the point. It’s a beginner-friendly break, so a longboard or a funboard will be your best mate here.
The surf gets a little ordinary again through the weekend and early next week. A few knee-high days with choppy winds – nothing to write home about.
Thursday morning, August 27th, we get another window with a 4ft NW swell (182 energy) and glassy conditions. It’s clean, but only offering surfable but very ordinary conditions. Worth a quick paddle if you’re jonesing.
Now, hold onto your board. Saturday morning, August 29th, the charts are showing a monster. We’re talkin’ a 15ft WNW groundswell with a 13-second period. That’s massive, with a combined energy of 6046. The wind is a light 6 mph from the SW, creating cross-shore conditions. But rust me, this is way too big for beginners, and even for experts, this break will be maxed out and dangerous. It’s for big-wave chargers only. The rest of that weekend and into September stays oversized and messy with onshore winds.
So overall, Friday morning the 21st is your golden ticket for clean, fun waves. The big pulse on the 29th is for the brave, and not a beginner’s game.
Rusty, signing off.
