The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s talk about Capbreton - La Pointe in feet and degrees. It’s a pretty bleak picture, I won’t lie. We’ve got a real dry spell heading our way.
The water temp is a balmy 76°, which is a wild 6° warmer than it should be this time of year. That’s really unusual.
Starting off, this Sunday the 19th you’ve got a tiny 1ft NW windswell and a moderate onshore breeze. It’s a total write-off. And that sets the tone for a long, long stretch. From Monday the 20th all the way through Saturday the 26th, there’s nothing worth talking about. Swell heights bounce between 1ft and 4ft, but the wind is always onshore or cross-onshore, keeping it choppy and messy. The energy is weak to moderate (27 to 123), and the forecast is not recommending any of it. Don’t bother.
We finally get a little window on Tuesday morning, July 28th. The wind goes dead calm – glassy as can be – with a 3ft NW swell running at 9 seconds. The wave energy picks up to 153 (moderate). The call is “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions”. It’s not going to be pumping, but after over a week of junk, that glassy surface and a few waist-high waves might be enough for a fun, easy session. Just know the wind switches back onshore by the afternoon. This is the best you’re going to get in this whole outlook.
After that, Wednesday the 29th morning shows a bit more size – around 4ft NW at 10 seconds – with a light cross-onshore breeze and building energy (268). But conditions are still called marginal. Then we roll into the first days of August with more of the same: small NW swell and onshore breezes. The only other real highlight is Sunday morning, August 2nd. We’ve got a clean, cross-offshore wind blowing from the East at 10 mph, with a 3ft NW swell at 9 seconds. The energy is moderate (144). It’ll be clean, but the swell is still small. A longboard or a fun shape would be your best bet for a clean, mellow session.
So there you have it. A massive gap in quality surf until the morning of the 28th, and even then it’s just okay. The morning of August 2nd is another option if you want clean conditions. Otherwise, leave the board in the car and wait for a better forecast.
Rusty.
