The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way.
Right off the bat, the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and sad. We’ve got a long stretch of barely any surf at Capbreton - La Pointe. From Sunday the 19th right through to the end of July, the swell is tiny, mostly under 3 ft, with short-period windswell that’s just not going to give you anything worth paddling out for. The wind is a mess too – mostly cross-onshore or onshore, with a few brief glassy mornings on Tuesday the 21st and Friday the 24th, but even then the swell is weak and the combined wave energy is barely registering, so it’s just not worth it.
The water is much warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 76°F with a 6°F anomaly, which is very unusual.
Now, the real standout is Tuesday morning, July 28th. That’s the one to circle. We’ve got a solid 8 ft swell rolling in from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 766 (moderate to strong). The wind is glassy, dead calm, which means clean, lined-up waves. That’s the best we’re going to see in this window. The swell is a bit big for beginners, but for anyone with some experience, that morning is going to be pumping.
The next best option is Wednesday morning, July 29th, with a 7 ft WNW swell, 10-second period, and a clean cross-offshore wind from the ENE. That’s a solid session too, with strong energy (1030), but it’s a close second to Tuesday’s glass-out.
After that, Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st still have some size (5 ft and 3 ft) but the wind turns messy in the afternoons, so mornings are your only shot.
The second week – August 1st through 3rd – drops off again. Swell fades to 3 ft–4 ft, period drops, and the wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore. Nothing to get excited about.
So, to sum it up: the first nine days are a write-off. Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th are your big opportunities. The rest is just waiting for a better forecast.
Rusty out.
