The Lowdown
Alright, I’m looking at the charts for the Capbreton region, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a bit of a tough run ahead. The next couple of weeks aren’t exactly firing, but there are a couple of windows that might get you wet if you play your cards right.
Right now, from Thursday the 20th through the weekend, the swell is coming in from the NW, but the wind is just not playing ball. We’ve got onshore and cross-onshore breezes that are messing up the surface. The waves are around 4 ft to 6 ft, but the period is short at 10 seconds, and the combined energy is only moderate (around 385 to 569). The water is a notable 25° and it’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a little unusual. Honestly, for paddle surfing, this stretch looks more interesting for the kite crew than for us.
We hit a bit of a lull from Sunday the 23rd onwards. The swell drops right off, with heights below 3 ft and energy readings plummeting into the teens and single digits. The wind does go light and variable, but there's just no power in the water. This quiet spell stretches through Wednesday the 27th.
Now, things start to build again later in the week. Thursday the 27th morning sees a jump in swell to 6 ft from the WNW, but the wind is howling at 19 mph from the WSW, creating lumpy cross-shore chop. By the afternoon, the swell hits 8 ft from the WNW, with a very strong energy reading of 1247, but the wind is direct onshore at 16 mph. That’s a big, messy, expert-only situation, and the conditions are poor.
The real standout I’m looking at is further out. On Thursday, September 4th, we get a clear morning with glassy wind – just a slight air movement from the ENE. The swell is 5 ft from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds and moderate energy around 322. The forecast says “expect good surf conditions” for that morning. The wind is glassy, which means clean, smooth waves. This is the best window in the whole 16-day outlook, but it’s a long way off, so keep your expectations in check. The rest of the first week of September is a mix of onshore winds and poor surf, so that Thursday morning is the one to circle.
Signing off, Rusty.
