The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you—this stretch ahead for Torre Bank is a tough one. We’re staring down a long, frustrating run of tiny, weak swell and messy wind for the next couple of weeks. There’s not a single day in this 16-day window that I’d call a proper surf day. The energy is almost non-existent, with combined swell readings mostly in the single digits or low tens—that’s barely a ripple. You’ll see a brief spike on Friday the 4th of September, but even that comes with a major caveat.
The water temp right now on the 21st of August is sitting at 85°—that’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, nearly 5° above average, so it’s a real standout for the first break we’re looking at.
Let’s walk through it. Friday the 21st of August, we’ve got a tiny 3 ft swell from the SSW at a short 7 seconds, cross wind, combined energy of only 60—weak. Saturday and Sunday, the 22nd and 23rd, are even worse: wind is cross-onshore, swell drops to 1–1 ft, energy is down in the dust. Monday the 24th through to Wednesday the 26th, same story: small slop, poor wind, scores of zero all the way. Thursday the 27th shows a cleaner window with a cross-off breeze, but it’s still only 2–3 ft and energy around 60—not enough to get excited about.
Friday the 28th of August into the weekend, we’ve got glassy mornings on Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th, but the swell is just 1–2 ft with barely any energy—14 and 6—so it’s flat, not surfable. That carries right through to Wednesday the 2nd of September. Honestly, there’s about 13 days of nothing here.
Then on Friday the 4th of September, the morning shows a pulse of 5 ft from the east at 7 seconds, combined energy jumping to 324—that’s moderate wave energy. The wind is glassy, 0 mph, so it’ll look clean. But here’s the kicker: the swell period is only 7 seconds, so it’s short-period windswell, not a proper groundswell. Torre Bank is a sandbar break, exposed to swell, and with a short-period east swell, it’s going to be junky and closey. Plus, it’s only 5 ft—that’s right on the edge of beginner-friendly. By the afternoon, the wind swings onshore and the surf turns poor again.
The rest of the forecast into the 5th of September is back to tiny slop. So what’s the best on offer? There isn’t one. If you’re desperate, the morning of Friday the 4th of September is the only window with any size and clean conditions, but the quality is poor. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, it’s a bleak run, but forecasts can change. I’d keep an eye on it, but right now, I’d leave the boards at home.
Rusty.
