The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer.
Honestly, mate, it’s a pretty flat and tough stretch ahead for this region. The first proper bit of swell isn't even on the cards for a while, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. There’s a long gap of nothing happening, so patience is the name of the game. The only break we’re looking at is Calita, a little reef setup.
For the first part of the run, from right now through to around Sunday the 20th of July, it's a write-off. The swell is tiny, if it’s there at all, and most of the energy readings are in single digits or zero. You'll be staring at flat, clean water, but there's no push to it. Not a wave to be had.
We start to see a little pulse of life from Monday the 21st of July, but it's weak. Monday morning the 21st sees tiny 0.5m easterly swell with a short period of 4 seconds and a glassy wind. The combined energy is only 9, so it's barely a ripple. That’s the theme – small, short-period windswell trying to get organised. The best of this mediocre run looks to be towards the very end of the outlook, on Wednesday the 29th of July. The swell bumps up to 2ft to 3ft from the east, with a still-short period of 5 seconds. The combined energy hits 34 in the afternoon, which is the highest we see.
The big standout, if you can call it that, is the Wednesday the 29th of July morning session at Calita. We've got 3ft of east swell with glassy conditions. The water temperature is way above normal for this time of year, sitting at 81°, which feels more like a bath than the open ocean. It’s a reef break, so those small, clean waves will have a bit of shape, but with that short period, they’re not going to have much punch. The swell direction is ESE, and that matches the optimum swell direction for the break. It’s inconsistent here, so you might wait a while between sets, but when they come, it'll be clean.
Given the tiny, weak swell and the fact it’s a reef setup, this won't be for the kite crew either—there's just not enough juice. For the rest of the 16 days, the surf stays poor, with most days showing zero combined wave energy. Keep your expectations low and your eye on that last Wednesday.
Rusty.
