The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’m looking at the whole 16-day window and it’s a tough one. We’ve got a real flat spell on the horizon. The first spot that even gets a whisper of a wave is Calita (a reef setup), but even then, it’s not looking good. The whole run is marked by poor surf conditions, and there’s a big gap of several days right in the middle where there’s literally nothing to ride.
Let’s break it down. Starting from Thursday, 16 July, it’s small and messy. Thursday morning has a weak 1 ft swell from the ESE with a tiny 4-second period and a combined energy of only 3, so hardly any push. The wind is onshore. Thursday afternoon is a bit bigger at 2 ft from the S, but the wind is up to 12 mph and onshore, so it’s choppy.
Friday, 17 July, morning is the best of a bad bunch. The wind goes glassy, which is a huge plus, and we get a 2 ft SW swell. The period is still short at 5 seconds, and the combined energy is only 25, so it’s weak. But it will be clean. Friday afternoon drops right back down to 0.7 ft.
Then from Saturday, 18 July, through to Wednesday, 22 July, there are long stretches with zero swell. The combined energy reads 0 for many sessions. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual to report.
We get a tiny pulse again on Thursday, 23 July, with a glassy morning and 2 ft from the E with a 5-second period (energy of 19). It’s clean, but tiny. That pattern of small, clean, but weak waves continues through the end of the month. The best-looking window is around Monday, 27 July, where we see a 3 ft ESE swell with a 5-second period and a combined energy of 33. The wind is cross-offshore in the morning, so it’ll be clean. But that’s still knee-high at best and pretty weak.
The standout? There isn’t one. If I had to pick the best chance for a surf, it would be the glassy morning of Friday, 17 July, with the 2 ft SW swell, or the clean morning of Monday, 27 July, with the 3 ft ESE swell. Both are tiny, weak, and only for the most patient longboarder or a beginner. For anyone else, this is a week to fix your gear.
Because the swell is so small and the energy is low, it’s not worth worrying about direction. The optimum swell direction for Calita is ESE, and we see that on the 27th, but the size is just too small to get excited.
So, to sum it up: we’ve got a long flat spell ahead. The first week is basically a write-off, and the second week offers only tiny, clean waves. It’s not often this quiet, so don’t lose hope, forecasts can change. For now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
