The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: we’ve got a long, flat stretch ahead. The next week and a half is basically a write-off for any kind of decent surf. We’re looking at a gap of about six days of nothing worthwhile before we even see a hint of a pulse, and even then it’s not going to get your heart racing.
The only spot on the radar is Calita, a reef break that’s exposed to an ESE swell. It’s an inconsistent one, so it needs a proper push to get going. Water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
Right, from the very start on Sunday the 19th through to Friday the 24th, it’s a total flat calm. The wind is light, some glassy moments, but there’s simply no swell energy to speak of. The combined energy is sitting at zero. You’d be better off checking the tide pools.
The first real sign of life shows up on Saturday morning, the 25th of July. A weak SE swell bumps in at 3ft with a period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy hits 51 (moderate). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the ENE, so it’ll be clean. It’s surfable, but only just. The waves will be small and ordinary. Afternoon turns choppy as the wind swings cross-on.
Things stay small and messy through the end of July and into the start of August. On Thursday the 30th, we get a slightly better pulse on the afternoon: 3ft from the E with a 6-second period and a combined energy of 57 (moderate). The wind is a cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit chopped up. Still, if you’re *really* desperate, that’s the only window where you might find a knee-high ripple that’s not completely blown out.
The standout, if you can call it that, is really the morning of Friday the 31st of July. The swell drops back to 2ft from the E at 6 seconds, but the wind is a clean cross-offshore from the WNW. It’ll be smooth and surfable, albeit tiny. The combined energy is 24 (weak). For a beginner, this is about as good as it gets in this forecast – small, clean, and manageable.
After that, it’s back to flatness through the first week of August. The 3rd of August shows a gusty offshore wind from the N, but with no swell, it’s just a wind swell fantasy.
Bottom line: we’ve got a long, dry spell. The only real chance for a paddle is the morning of the 25th or the 31st of July, and even then, keep your expectations low. It’s not a total blank, but it’s close.
Rusty.
