Honestly, this is a tough stretch. The first couple of weeks are mostly flat or tiny, with hardly any real push. For the first ten days or so, you’re looking at nothing but scraps – knee-high slop at best, with most days offering no rideable swell at all. There’s a long, dry gap from the start right through to the end of the first week with nothing worth paddling out for. It’s not until the second week that anything remotely interesting shows up, but even then, it’s a slow build.

The standout – and really the only window that gets my blood pumping – is the morning of Friday the 14th of August. That’s the day things finally come together. The swell jumps to a solid 6 ft from the east, with an 8-second period and combined energy hitting 443 – that’s moderate wave energy finally heading our way. But the real beauty is the wind: glassy, calm conditions. That’s a rare treat. The water temp is sitting at 72°, which is about a degree and a half cooler than average for this time of year – nothing wild, but you’ll notice it if you’re used to warmer water.

However, later that same Friday afternoon the swell pushes up to 8 ft from the east, with energy climbing to 709, but the wind swings cross-onshore and the period is still short at 8 seconds. That size, with that wind, and the short period, means it’ll be a bit of a messy, lumpy affair – better for the experienced crew only. La Chucha is an inconsistent reef break, so even when there’s swell, you have to be patient. The direction off the east matches the optimum for this spot, which is a plus.

But honestly? The whole outlook is bleak. Most days are either flat or offering poor surf with cross-shore or onshore wind. There’s a tiny bump on Tuesday the 11th of August afternoon with 5 ft from the west-southwest and glassy wind, but the energy is moderate at 158 and the period is still short. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.

If you’re a beginner, stick to the easy days when it’s small, but with this much inconsistency, you’re better off waiting for a better forecast. For the experts, that Friday the 14th morning window is the one to circle – but be ready for a crowd, because when La Chucha does break, people know about it.
