The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up. Gotta be straight with you—this one’s a bit of a bummer. We’ve got nearly two weeks of very little to get excited about, so don’t be in a rush to grab your board.

The whole 16-day window is a flat spell for the Barbate River. We’re looking at tiny, weak waves for the foreseeable future. From now through to the 24th of September, the swell height barely cracks 0.7 ft, and the energy is pathetically weak, with values mostly in the single digits and teens (13 to 145). The wind is a constant cross-off from the east, but it’s howling at 22 to 34 mph for much of the first week, turning conditions into a washing machine. The odd afternoon might see a light breeze, but with no swell to work with, it doesn’t matter.

There is a little blip on Wednesday the 16th where the swell bumps up to 3 ft with the combined energy hitting 113, but it’s a short-period 6 to 8 second wind swell, and it’s coming straight onshore or cross-onshore. The river mouth is exposed, so that onshore wind is going to chop it up badly. This is really more of a kite-surf setup than anything you’d want to paddle into. For the beginner crew, anything over 5 ft is a no-go, but here the issue is the lack of any real wave.

After that, it’s back to dust. From the 19th right through the 24th, we’re looking at barely 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft waves, if that. The water temperature anomaly isn't given for the first break, so I can't comment on that, but the energy readings are pathetic—single digits. We finally get a glassy, flat morning on the 24th, but you could waterski across it. The last few days of the month show a slight lift to 2 ft to 3 ft by the 27th, but the period is still short (5 to 6 seconds) and the energy is still weak (18 to 65). The wind stays cross-off, keeping it clean, but there’s just nothing to ride.

Honestly, this is a classic blank run for a river mouth setup. It tends to go quiet and stay quiet. Don’t hold your breath.

Rusty.
