The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, dry spell for Punta Umbria (Playa Camarón), with barely a ripple to get excited about for the entire 16-day window. Every single session in the data comes back as "poor surf conditions," so I can’t in good conscience point you to a single standout wave. There’s a blank run from the start on Thursday, August 6th, all the way through to Friday, August 21st. That’s a solid two-week gap with no real surf to speak of.
The swell energy is weak, barely cracking double digits. The highest combined energy we see during the whole stretch is a paltry 22 (on Tuesday, August 11th morning). The swell heights are tiny, mostly hanging around 0.7 ft to 2 ft, with periods that are all over the place – short, crumbly 3-second stuff mixed with a few longer 8 to 10-second pulses, but the swell just isn't there to push it. The water temperature is sitting at 73°, which is about 2° warmer than normal for this time of year, a nice warm bath but not much to ride.
The mornings do offer some clean cross-offshore winds from the north-northwest, but the waves are so small it’s more of a paddle-and-chat session than a surf. The afternoons are a write-off with onshore winds from the southwest, blowing out whatever tiny bump might be there. For a spot that’s exposed to the southwest, the optimum direction, we just aren’t getting any love.
Honestly, with this setup being a beach break and the wind doing its thing, the conditions look more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. Don’t lose hope, though – it tends not to stay this flat for long, and the forecasts can change. Keep checking back.
Rusty.
