The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s paddle out and see what’s in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
We’re looking at just one spot that’s got any kind of action on the table: Pedra do Sal. This place is a consistent, exposed beginner-friendly break, and the water is sitting at 63°—a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you might want that extra layer.
The first couple of days are a real mixed bag. Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st serve up some waist to chest-high swell, around 5ft to 6ft, with a moderate energy level (783 to 859 units). The problem is the wind isn’t playing ball—on Thursday it’s light and onshore, and Friday gets messy with a cross-onshore breeze. It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for a clean one.
Saturday the 22nd morning is where it starts to get interesting. The swell drops to 4ft from the NNW, but the wind swings cross-offshore and it’s clean. Wave energy is light (285 units), so it’s small, but the conditions are good. Sunday the 23rd is the real standout so far. We’ve got clean, offshore winds all day, with a 3ft to 3ft swell from the W and WSW. The energy is light (295 to 219 units), but it’s glassy and clean—perfect for a longboard or a funboard, especially if you’re a beginner.
Monday the 24th keeps the clean offshore flow, but the swell is tiny (3ft to 2ft, energy down to 50 units). It’s more of a paddle than a surf. Then we hit a dry spell. Tuesday the 25th through Wednesday the 27th offers almost nothing, with swell bottoming out at 1.0ft to 1ft. The end of the month sees a bit of a pulse: from the 26th onward, the swell picks up, but it’s lumpy and cross-shore, with moderate energy (443 to 586 units) and a stormy feel. By the 27th we’re looking at a solid 8ft from the WNW, but the wind is cross-shore and the energy is strong (1043 to 1098 units). That’s big, punchy, and messy—more for the experienced guys, and honestly, it looks more interesting for a kite session than a clean paddle.
The real highlight, if you’re patient, is the morning of Saturday the 29th of August. The swell is a clean 5ft from the NW, combined energy at 502 units (moderate), and the wind is light and cross-offshore. The guidance says expect very good surf conditions. That’s your best window. The following days fade back into small, cross-onshore junk.
If you’re willing to wait until the very end of the forecast, the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September has a glassy 5ft from the W, but the energy is low (253 units) and the consistency is small. It’s a final chance to get a clean wave before the run fizzles out.
So, bottom line: Sunday the 23rd morning through afternoon is your cleanest, best bet for small, fun waves. The Saturday the 29th morning is the standout for a bit more size and good shape. The rest is either too small, too windy, or too messy.
Rusty out.
