The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Pedra do Sal. To be straight with you, the first week and a half is a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions with messy, choppy surf and cross-onshore winds that just won't let up. Honestly, from Monday the 17th right through to about the 28th of August, there isn’t much to get excited about—the wind is ruining everything, and the swell is weak or poorly directed. It’s a tough run.
You’ll see a bit of a pulse around Thursday the 20th with a 6ft swell from the NNW and a long 12-second period, but the combined energy is moderate at 1057, and that cross-onshore wind will chop it up. Not worth paddling out for. Even the 7ft on Sunday the 23rd is blown out. The trough is deep.
Now, where it gets interesting is the final weekend of August. On Friday the 28th, the swell jumps to 10ft in the morning and 12ft in the afternoon from the NW, with a 10-second period – but that is way too meaty for this break. The combined energy is very strong (1629 in the morning, 4327 in the afternoon). This is big, heavy water and only for experts who know the reef. The wind is still cross-on, so it’ll be a battle.
But the true standout, the one that’s worth circling on the calendar, is Saturday the 29th of August. We’ve got a 13ft groundswell from the NNW, with a period of 12 seconds, giving a very strong combined energy reading of 5152. The wind goes glassy in the morning, absolutely dead calm—that is pure gold. This is a proper, powerful groundswell, so it will be lining up with some serious shape. I wouldn’t take a beginner anywhere near it at this size, but for an experienced surfer? This is as good as it gets. The swell is going to be breaking with crazy power, and with clean, glassy conditions, the take-offs will be a dream if you’ve got the balls for it. This is your best chance in the whole 16-day window, but mark my words, it’s only for the well-seasoned.
The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is nearly a degree and a half cooler than average for this time of year, so it’s a bit nippy for the season. Throw a spring suit on if you’re heading out.
And for the first part of the month, don’t hold your breath. After that big Saturday, things settle down, but there’s another shot on Tuesday the 1st of September with a 7ft WNW groundswell and glassy conditions in the morning. That’s a solid, clean option for competent surfers too, but the Saturday stand is the real highlight.
Stay safe, and pick your sessions.
