The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, looking at what’s shaping up for Pedra do Sal over the next couple of weeks. Right now, we’re in a bit of a slow patch, but there’s some real promise brewing if you’re willing to wait. The water’s sitting at a chilly 62°F, which is much colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want at least a 4/3 mil.
We’ve got a gap to start – nothing worth paddling out for until Sunday the 23rd. That afternoon delivers a glassy little 3ft swell from the WSW, with a 9-second period and weak energy (248). It’s small, but clean as a whistle with zero wind. Beginner-friendly and a chance to get wet without much fuss.
Monday the 24th sees a drop in energy early – 2ft from the NE, glassy again, but the period’s short at 7 seconds and the combined energy is weak (81). It’s ordinary. By afternoon, the wind swings onshore and it turns messy, so not worth talking about. Tuesday the 25th stays small with a cross-off breeze, but the swell’s barely 2ft, and the energy’s still weak (54). Wednesday the 26th kicks up a bit in the afternoon – 5ft from the WSW, 7-second period, but it’s cross-shore wind and a cross-chop, and the rating’s poor despite the jump in energy to 228 (moderate). Not your day.
Thursday the 27th gets interesting, but not quite there yet. Morning brings 7ft from the west with an 8-second period, clean cross-off wind, and strong energy (630). Still, it’s rated marginal, likely due to tide. Afternoon holds similar – 7ft, clean, but again marginal. If you’re keen and know the bank, it could be okay, but I wouldn’t call it a standout.
Now, Friday the 28th is a beast – and not for everyone. We’ve got 12ft from the WNW with an 11-second period and massive energy (2873). This is expert-only territory, and the wind is cross-shore with some chop. The swell’s just too big for this break, so unless you’re charging on a gun, sit this one out. Same story for the afternoon.
The real standout kicks off Saturday the 29th. Morning session is where it’s at – 7ft from the NW, 9-second period, clean cross-off wind from the SSW, and strong energy (654). This is the best of the run, with good surf conditions and a window of clean waves. The afternoon drops to 6ft, still clean, but the morning is the pick. Sunday the 30th keeps it going – 5ft from the NW, cross-off breeze, and clean (247 energy). Solid fun size, not too big, and a light crowd factor possible since it’s a consistent spot.
Monday the 31st offers another shot – 6ft from the WNW, 9-second period, glassy conditions in the morning, with moderate energy (474). Then we hit a dry spell. From the 1st of September through the 6th, it’s all small, onshore wind, and poor conditions – a real lull with breaks barely reaching 4ft and most days below 3ft.
There’s a late pulse on Monday the 7th of September – 10ft from the WNW, clean cross-off wind, but again too big for this spot (1513 energy), only for experts. By afternoon it drops to 8ft, still marginal. That’s a long way out, so treat it as promising but uncertain.
Bottom line: Saturday morning the 29th is your best bet – 7ft NW swell, clean glassy offshore feel, and solid energy. Sunday the 30th morning is a close second if you want a smaller, more relaxed session. The rest is either too small, too windy, or too big for the break.
Rusty.
