Playa de Caion Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, let’s get into it. The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag for Playa de Caion. We’ve got some decent swell windows, but the wind is going to be a constant factor. It’s not all doom and gloom though, there’s a couple of proper gems in there if you’re willing to pick your moments.

Right off the bat, Wednesday and Thursday are a write-off. There’s some swell, around 6ft to 7ft, but the cross and cross-onshore winds are going to chop it all up. Poor conditions. It’s a frustrating start, but that’s the way it is.

Then we’ve got a bit of a lull with a few small, junky days on Friday and into the weekend. The swell does build on Friday the 18th, hitting 8ft with a long 13-second period, but the onshore wind ruins it. The energy is there – we’re talking a strong 2655 on the combined swell energy – but it’s not rideable.

The first real standout is Saturday morning, September 19th. The swell drops a touch to 8ft but the period stays solid at 13 seconds from the NW. The wind finally plays ball, going light and cross-offshore from the ENE. The call is for clean conditions and the energy is still robust at 1729. This is the one to get excited about this week. It’s a proper groundswell with good shape, and the cross-off wind will keep it lined up. For the experienced surfer, this is your window.

Sunday morning will still have some nice 6ft surf from the NW, and the ENE cross-off wind returns, keeping it clean. Good waves, just a step down from Saturday. Monday morning also looks tidy, with clean 5ft surf and a light E wind, but the swell energy is starting to fade.

We’ll see an onshore wind kick in Monday afternoon and that will mess things up through Tuesday. Not worth the paddle. The swell drops off to around 3ft and the conditions get poor.

Now, looking ahead, things get very interesting. Wednesday morning, September 23rd is another standout. The wind goes completely glassy from the SW, which is rare. The swell is a solid 7ft with a 14-second period from the WNW. The energy is strong at 1689. The conditions will be absolutely perfect – glassy, clean, and powerful. This is the other highlight of the whole forecast. It’s a long way out, so I’d keep an eye on it, but if it comes together the way the data suggests, it will be worth the wait.

After that, things go a bit quiet again for the end of September, with smaller swell and more cross-shore winds. The surf drops off and the quality fades.

But just when you think it’s all over, there’s a late push. Monday morning, September 28th shows a jump back up to 8ft from the NW with a 14-second period, and only a light cross-shore wind. It’s going to be a bit lumpy, but there’s a lot of power in the water – energy is reading 2672. That’s a strong system.

Then we get Tuesday morning, September 29th. The wind drops to absolute glass, completely calm. The swell is a manageable 6ft from the NW. It’s going to be absolutely clean. The energy is at 887, which is moderate, but with no wind, that’s going to be a glorious session.

Finally, Wednesday morning, September 30th – a week from Saturday – is another one to circle. The magic SW wind is back, with 8ft of WNW swell. The period is a shorter 10 seconds, but the energy is strong at 1379 and it’s forecast as, quite frankly, excellent. That’s another early morning winner, just like a week before.

So to sum it up: this weekend's Saturday morning is your best near-term bet, and then next Wednesday the 23rd and the following Wednesday the 30th are the long-range standouts. The water temp is sitting right around 64°F, which is about normal for this time of year with a slight -1°F anomaly, so just a touch cooler than average. Looks like you’ll need the spring suit but not a hood.
