Updates in  hr  min  s Forecast update imminent

Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s get real about the next couple of weeks on the south coast. The surf report is pretty grim: a long, flat spell with hardly anything to get excited about. The first wave that even looks like a wave turns up on the 19th of July, and it’s a small one.

Through the start of July at Almagreira (Portugal), it’s a total bust. Water temps are normal for the season at 67°F, but the waves are tiny – 0-3 ft junk from the NW with periods of 5-6 seconds. The wind is onshore or cross-onshore at 9-15 mph, making it choppy and messy. Wave energy numbers are in the single digits and twenties (weak). Skip it.

The 8th, 9th, and 10th tease with a little more size, maybe knee to thigh high (3 ft), but it’s still short-period NW slop with 5-6 seconds between crests. The wind stays cross-onshore at 9-15 mph, and the combined energy barely reaches the 40-50 range. It’s not worth suiting up for.

Then from the 11th through the 18th, the ocean pretty much goes to sleep. We’re talking ankle-biters at 0-1 ft, with combined energy dropping to as low as 2 (negligible). On the 12th and 13th we get some 18-19 second groundswell lines, but they’re only 0.3 ft – you’d need a magnifying glass to see them. This is a proper lull.

Finally, on Sunday the 19th, we see a modest bump. The morning brings 3 ft from the NNW at 5 seconds, with a combined energy of 58 (still weak). Wind is a light cross-onshore from the WNW at 6 mph. It’ll be small and a bit soft, but it’s ridable for a beginner. The afternoon stays similar with a little more breeze. This is the only real option in the whole 16-day window, but it’s nothing special. The 20th and 21st fade back to 0.3 ft again.

So, if you’re desperate, a beginner session at Almagreira on the 19th morning might just give you a few waist-high lumpy ones. But for anyone with standards, this is a long, dry spell. A kiteboarder would have more fun on the windy days. Hang tight – it’ll turn around eventually.
