The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this stretch ahead is a bit of a head-scratcher for the lineup. The numbers are there at times, but the wind just won’t play nice for most of it. We’re looking at a long run where the ocean has plenty of push, but the surface is gonna be messy. There are a couple of bright spots early doors, but don’t hold your breath for a perfect week.
We’re kicking things off at Lagide (Arinaga) on Monday afternoon, the 17th. There’s some waist-high swell pushing in at 5ft from the NNW, but it’s short-period stuff, only 8 seconds, and the light cross-on breeze is going to have it looking a bit ragged. The water is sitting at 66°F, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year—you’ll feel that on the walk out. The energy is weak at 244, so it’s not really doing much. Not the welcome you want.
Now, here’s the window you’ve been waiting for. Tuesday morning, the 18th, is our first real standout. The swell holds around 5ft from the NNW, still 8 seconds, but the wind swings offshore from the SSW, and that makes all the difference. It’s clean face, proper lines for a beach and reef set-up. The energy bumps up into the moderate zone at 282. This is the one to paddle out for if you can only make one session in these first few days.
Wednesday the 19th drops off fast. Only 3ft of swell, and while the morning has a clean feel with a light cross-off, the energy is weak at 93. It’s just not got any grunt. Thursday the 20th is even smaller, 2ft, but it’s glassy in the morning. That’s a longboard and a prayer kind of morning. The period stretches out to 9 seconds, which is nice, but there’s just no water moving.
Then the swell comes back, but so does the wind, and it’s not our friend. From Friday the 21st through the end of next week, we’ve got a solid pulse of northwest groundswell—we’re talking 6ft to 7ft with periods hitting 10 seconds. The energy numbers get serious, into the strong range, like 626 up to 748. But it’s all ruined by strong onshore winds. It’s blowing 15-18 mph straight onshore. This will be a washing machine. The wave heights are too much for beginners once they push past 5ft, and with the wind, it’s only going to appeal to the most experienced locals who don’t mind getting thrashed. For the rest of us, it’s a wind-check and a “nah.”
This onshore pattern just locks in. Day after day of lumpy, onshore junk. The swell energy stays high—there’s a big pulse around the 27th and then again into the first of September, with energy readings hitting four digits on the 1st, like 1102. That’s a serious amount of water moving. But it’s all crossed-up with onshore wind. The period stretches out to 9 seconds, and the swell direction is good, but it’s just going to be a mess at the beach.
The only other blip on the radar is Monday morning, the 31st of August. The swell is still up there at 7ft from the NNW, but the wind eases off to a light cross-on. It’s still not clean, but it’s the least terrible of what’s on offer in that second week. The energy is strong at 732, but it’s marked as marginal. This is a promise of potential, not a guarantee.
Honestly, for most of this run, you’d be better off checking the kite spots. With this much swell and this much onshore wind, a beach and reef set-up like Lagide is going to be blown out. It’s more interesting for the foil and kite crowd than for paddle surfing.
So, here’s the deal: make the most of Tuesday morning. That’s your window. Everything after that, until we see this wind ease into the first week of September, is a grind. It’s promising, sure, but it's a long way out and the forecast can change. Don’t write it off completely, but don’t book the time off work yet.
Rusty out.
