The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks. Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – it’s a lean run. The whole 16-day window is pretty much a write-off for a decent paddle. The data is telling me there’s no good surf on offer, none at all. It’s one of those stretches where the region just isn’t cooperating.
Starting off this Saturday, the 18th, we’re looking at tiny, weak conditions. Lagide is seeing a cross-onshore breeze all weekend, with swell heights barely scraping 1 ft to 3 ft. The period is short – mostly 5 to 8 seconds – so there’s no real push. The combined wave energy is weak, reading between 26 and 91. It’s choppy and messy. Not worth paddling out for.
Monday the 20th is a little bigger, with the swell climbing to 3 ft and the energy hitting 123 (moderate), but it’s still cross-onshore with a short period of 7 seconds. The waves are poor.
Tuesday the 21st morning goes glassy – wind is nearly nothing at 3 mph from the NW, which is a rare moment of calm. Swell is tiny at 2 ft though, and the energy is weak at 73. It’s pretty, but there’s nothing to ride.
Then we hit a big gap. From Wednesday the 22nd all the way through to Saturday the 1st of August, every single session is marked as “poor surf conditions.” The swell builds, but the wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, and the quality is just not there. The water temperature is about 68°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze if you’re just sitting there.
The real story comes in the second week. From Sunday the 26th of July, the swell really ramps up. By Tuesday the 28th, we’re looking at 8 ft to 8 ft swell from the NNW, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy spikes to 888 and then 1037 (strong to very strong). That’s proper power. But the wind is onshore at 25 mph. That’s a howling mess. The break is a beach and reef setup, and with that much wind and size, it’s going to be a washing machine. Honestly, for a few days there, it looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
The largest swell hits around the 29th and 30th of July, with heights of 8 ft and energy over 1000 (1042). But again, the wind is onshore, and the break is described as “fairly exposed” to that NNW swell. It’s just too windy to be clean. This is strictly for experts only, and even then, it’s going to be a battle.
Towards the very end, on Sunday the 2nd of August, the wind finally swings cross-shore from the WNW, and the swell drops to 4 ft to 5 ft with a period of 10 seconds. The energy is still moderate at 374 and 320. It’s the best-looking window for wind, but the condition is still described as “poor.” It’s a slight improvement, but not a standout.
So, where’s the highlight? There isn’t one. The best on offer is the glassy morning of Tuesday the 22nd, but it’s too small. Or the very end of the run on the 2nd of August, where the wind is better, but the swell is dropping. It’s a tough outlook. Sometimes the forecast can change, and a blank run like this is more normal for the area, so don’t lose hope, but for now, I’d save the wax.
Rusty.
