The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Lagide has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a bit of a mixed bag, with a whole lot of "on" wind and blown-out conditions gumming up most days. The water is sitting at a cool 66°, which is 3° colder than average for this time of year, so that’s a bit of a shock to the system if you’re not used to it.
The first real chance of a wave comes on Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. It’s not huge, with a 5 ft swell out of the NNW, but the wind is light and cross-onshore with some light breeze, producing small wind ripples. It’s just a marginal one, though, nothing to get excited about. Saturday afternoon cleans right up with a cross-offshore breeze and a 4 ft NNW swell (period 9 seconds), offering what’s described as “good” conditions. The wave energy is moderate at 281, and you’ll find some clean, rideable lines.
Sunday the 23rd sees a pulse of bigger, longer-period swell – 6 ft from the W with an 11-second period (784 combined energy) Sunday morning, but the wind picks up strong from the SSE, making it a cross-offshore blow with a clean face. Still, the wind is fresh, so it’s not perfect. Afternoon on Sunday goes downhill fast with a risk of thunderstorms and gusty SSW winds. Monday the 24th has a brief window of offshore wind in the morning with a 5 ft WSW swell (8-second period, 321 energy), but it’s still a marginal call.
From Tuesday the 25th right through to the end of the first week, it’s mostly small, weak swell and poor conditions. The best you’ll get is a 3 ft to 4 ft WNW swell with clean faces but very ordinary quality. Wave energy drops into the double digits, which tells you it’s weak. Honestly, it’s a low-energy stretch.
Now, looking further ahead, there’s a standout event brewing for Friday the 28th of August. The morning shows a solid 10 ft NW groundswell with a long 12-second period. That’s a big, powerful swell with combined energy at 2227 – that’s strong. The wind, though, is onshore from the north at 12 mph, so the wave face will be lumpy. This is not for beginners – at over 8 ft, it’s expert territory, and with that long period, it could be a bit walled and unruly at a beach-and-reef setup like Lagide. It’s a marginal proposition. The next few days after that drop off quickly in size, but the northerly wind stays on it, so it’s largely blown out.
To sum it up: if you had to pick, I’d say the cleanest, most user-friendly surf of the whole outlook is the Saturday afternoon on the 22nd of August. It’s not big, but it’s clean, the wind is kind, and the waves are manageable. The big Friday the 28th pulse is for the experienced crew only, and only if you can handle a bumpy, onshore surface.
Rusty.
