The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’re looking at Lagide, and I’ll be honest with you, the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag. There’s some swell on the cards, but the wind is gonna be the main character in this story, and not always in a good way.
We kick off on Friday the 21st. There’s a 7ft NNW swell rolling in with an 11-second period, but it’s pinned directly by a strong northerly wind at 19 mph. The water’s about average for this time of year. The combined swell energy is moderate (952), but that onshore wind is going to make a mess of it. It’s a no-go for a paddle. Honestly, with that wind and the beach-and-reef setup, this might look more interesting for the kite crew than us surfers.
The outlook picks up a touch on Saturday the 22nd. The morning is still iffy with a 5ft swell from the NNW and a light cross-onshore. But the afternoon cleans up nicely. The wind swings to the west at 9 mph, going cross-offshore, and the swell drops to 4ft from the NNW. It’s manageable, with moderate energy (319), and the conditions are clean. It’s not pumping, but it’s a chance to get a few grovelly ones.
Sunday the 23rd sees a new pulse. A 6ft to 6ft swell from the west with a decent 11-second period. The winds are cross-offshore from the SSE and SSW, keeping things clean despite being a bit fresh at 19 mph. The energy is moderate to strong (746). It’s a step up in size and quality, but it’s still a marginal call – the tide might not be your friend. This is probably the best morning of the first week if you can work around the tide.
From Monday the 24th through the end of the month, things go a bit flat and messy. There are pockets of clean surf, like Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, but the swell is small – around 3ft to 4ft – and the period is short, under 8 seconds. The energy is weak (between 81 and 295). These are "ordinary conditions" days. Good for a longboard if you’re desperate, but nothing to write home about.
We get another shot of size around Friday the 28th of August. A 7ft swell from the NW with an 11-second period. The combined energy is strong (954-1029). But again, the wind is a problem – onshore or cross-onshore all day. It’s going to be choppy. This one is for experts only at that size, and the conditions will be poor.
Looking further out, into the first week of September, the pattern stays frustrating. We see another pulse of 6ft to 7ft swell from the NNW on the 3rd and 4th, but it’s pinned by a strong northerly wind, 22 to 25 mph. The period is short, only 7-8 seconds, so the energy (295-592) won't have much punch. It’s going to be a choppy, blown-out mess. This is definitely more of a kitesurfing setup than a surfing one.
So, what’s the call? The real standout in this entire 16-day window, if you can call it that, is Sunday morning the 23rd of August at Lagide. It’s your best bet for a clean 6ft west swell with a reasonable 11-second period. It’s not perfect, but it’s the closest we’ll get to a proper session. For the rest of it, be patient. When the swell is up, the wind is on it, and when the wind is good, the swell is tiny. Such is life.
Stay stoked.
