The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s size up what’s coming for Lagide (beach and reef). I gotta be straight with you – this is a grim outlook. The whole 16-day run is looking flat as a millpond for any kind of decent surf. The first proper recommendation doesn't even show up until the 17th of July, and even then, it's a struggle.
Right from the start, Friday the 17th, we’ve got tiny, weak swell. The water is sitting at 66°, which is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. The swell is coming from the west-northwest at a pathetic 1ft, with a period of 8 seconds, but the wind is onshore from the north-northwest. It’s a poor setup. The combined energy is a measly 31 (weak energy), and the wave comment says it all: poor surf. This pattern just keeps rolling through the weekend. Saturday and Sunday stay small, with cross-onshore winds and energy readings barely cracking 76 (weak energy). It’s not the kind of thing you paddle out for.
The middle of the week around Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st sees a tiny bump in energy, with the combined swell energy hitting 102 and 122 (moderate wave energy), but the swell is still under 3ft and coming from the north-northwest. The wind stays cross-onshore or onshore, so the surface is going to be messy. That’s not a standout, that’s just less bad.
We get a bit more size as we head into the weekend of the 25th and 26th. On Saturday the 25th, the swell pushes up to 4ft from the north-northwest, with combined energy at 103 (moderate wave energy). The wind is onshore, so it’s going to be bumpy. Sunday the 26th sees similar size, 5ft, with energy hitting 138 (moderate wave energy), but again, the wind is onshore from the north-northwest at 15 mph. Not clean.
The best-looking window in the whole outlook is the stretch from Monday the 27th through to Wednesday the 29th. The swell builds to a solid 7ft on Monday morning from the north-northwest, with a period of 7 seconds and a combined energy of 331 (strong wave energy). That’s a real push of water. The wind is onshore, though, so it’s going to be a bit of a battle. This size is getting into the territory best left for experienced surfers, and it’s a beach and reef setup, so with that onshore wind, it might actually be more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. The best chance for a cleaner wave in this period might be the afternoon of Wednesday the 29th, when the swell drops to 3ft but the period stretches to a lovely 12 seconds from the northwest, with a combined energy of 364 (strong wave energy). That long period groundswell has real potential, but it’s still onshore wind from the north at 22 mph, so it’s a gamble.
The first week of August sees the energy drop back down. On Saturday the 1st, we have a combined energy of 132 (moderate wave energy) with a 3ft northwest swell, but the wind is cross-onshore again.
Look, I’ll be honest: there’s no true standout here. The whole period is plagued by poor wind direction for this break. The best advice is to keep an eye on the forecasts, because this stretch of poor conditions is a long one, but things can change. For now, the setup is more interesting for the wind sports crew than us.
Rusty.
