The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here looking ahead at the forecast for Lagide.
To be honest, we’re in for a rough stretch for paddle surfing. It’s a beach and reef break, fairly open to the swell, but the wind and waves are not cooperating at all. We’re looking at a long dry period ahead.
The water is about 64°F, which is a bit cooler than average for this time of year. Nothing wild, but you’ll notice it.
For the next week or so, it’s dead. The swell is tiny, mostly under 2 feet, with short periods under 10 seconds. The wave energy is weak, barely cracking 100. The wind is all over the place – cross-on, cross-off – never clean. Every session is marked as “poor surf conditions” with a score of zero. Nothing to ride. This runs from now through about July 22nd.
In the second week, things do start to pick up in size, but the wind stays a problem. By July 23rd, the swell starts building. On July 24th, we have a 4ft swell from the WNW with a 12-second period, but it’s blowing 12 mph from the north, straight onshore. The energy jumps to 558 – which is moderate – but the wind is going to chop it up.
July 25th is the biggest pulse. The morning shows a 7ft NW groundswell (12-second period), but with 16 mph north winds. That’s too big for beginners and the onshore wind will make it a mess. The combined energy hits 1188 – that’s proper power – but it’s only going to appeal to experts in ugly conditions. Honestly, this kind of setup might be more interesting for a kite surfer.
July 27th is the same story: 8ft from the NW, but cross-onshore winds at 12 mph. A lot of energy (787), but not clean.
The wind never really lets up. Even when the swell is biggest, we’ve got moderate onshore and cross-onshore breezes. That long period groundswell on the 24th and 25th (12 seconds) could offer better shape at a reef or point, but here at a beach and reef with onshore wind, it’s going to close out and be a washing machine. Paddling out might be easier between sets, but you won’t get a decent ride.
So the bottom line: there’s no standout session in this forecast. If you’re really jonesing, July 24th morning has the biggest swell, but the wind kills it. It’s a long blank run, but for this area, that’s not too unusual. Forecasts can change, so keep checking in, but don’t get your hopes up too high.
Rusty.
