The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Lagide over this next stretch.
Right, straight off the bat, I have to be honest with you – this is a bit of a tough outlook. We’re looking at a solid 16-day forecast, but there’s no real stand-out, all-time session in there. The first few days offer a little taste, but mostly, it’s a long wait for a few pulses that get blown out or hit with the wrong wind. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no nasty surprises there.
For the best chance at a decent wave, I’d circle Sunday the 23rd of August. Lagide is a beach and reef set-up, and that morning we’ve got a moderate 6ft swell rolling in from the west, with a period of 11 seconds. That’s a nice bit of groundswell energy, strong but not unmanageable, with moderate wave energy in the water (785). The wind will be offshore from the SSE at 19 mph, which will keep things clean and lined up. It’s a bit on the bigger side, so maybe not one for the beginners, but for the advanced crew, it’s the pick. The crowd factor is "often", meaning you won't be alone, but with conditions like that, you can expect a few others to have the same idea. The swell direction is pretty close to its optimum from the NNW, so it should wrap in nicely.
Saturday the 22nd starts the run with a 5ft swell from the NNW, but the wind is light and cross, making it a bit messy. The word "questionable tide conditions" is in the notes, so the window is tight. It’s surfable but not worth getting too excited about.
Monday the 24th sees a big drop in swell size to 1.0ft in the morning, and a brief lift to 6ft in the afternoon, but the wind is a strong cross-off of 25 mph. That’s going to be rough; I’d say the setup actually looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing that afternoon.
Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th are small and weak, with short period swell under 4ft. The wind is light to moderate and cross-off, but there’s just no energy behind it (combined energy down around 92-156). It’s the kind of day you go for a paddle but probably don’t bother with the board.
Then, from Thursday the 27th of August all the way through to Saturday the 6th of September, it’s a long, frustrating stretch of onshore winds, mostly from the north and NNW, at 12 to 19 mph. The swell does build – by the 4th and 5th of September we’re looking at 7ft to 8ft from the NW and NNW with periods up to 12 seconds, and combined energy jumping into four-digit figures (over 1000). But it’s all onshore, creating poor, choppy conditions. This is expert-only territory if you even bother; the waves will be powerful, but the wind is going to make it a messy, challenging session. The 8ft mark is really only for the experienced crew.
So, to sum it up: if you’re after clean, quality surf, your window is the morning of Sunday the 23rd of August. After that, you’re playing a waiting game, and the long-range promise for early September is there in size but not in quality.
Stay hopeful, swell isn’t always followed by the right wind. I’ll see you out there if the stars align.
