The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the surf forecast for our stretch of coast over the next couple of weeks is about as inspiring as a flat day in July. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing, and I mean nothing. From the 18th right through to the 1st of September, the ocean is basically taking a holiday. We’re looking at a solid two-week gap with zero decent surf. The swell energy is laughably weak, barely reaching double digits – you’ll see values like 16, 45, or 50 in the mix, which is just background noise. It’s the kind of spell where you check the buoys out of habit, not hope.
Now, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but it’s a long way off. On the morning of Tuesday, the 2nd of September, that’s over a week away, things finally start to wake up. We’re seeing a new SW swell pushing in at about 5 feet. The energy jumps to 522, which is a solid kick in the pants compared to everything before it. The period is 10 seconds, which is okay, not spectacular, but it’s real surf. The problem is the wind. It’s coming from the WSW at 9 mph, which puts it straight onshore at Supertubos. The wave comment for that morning is literally “poor surf conditions” – a classic case of a swell arriving with a bad attitude.
So, what do we do with all this? Honestly, there are no standout days. Not one. The only real option, and I’m using that term loosely, is to keep an eye on that Wednesday morning, September 2nd. It’s not great, and the wind is going to chop it up, but it’s the only pulse of energy in the whole window. If you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your window, but don’t expect any classic Supertubos barrels. For the kitesurfers among us, that onshore wind and the building swell on the 2nd might actually look more appealing than it does to us on a surfboard.
The water temp is running about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. Just keep the boards waxed and wait this one out. The ocean will come back, it always does, but this forecast is a firm “stay home.”
