The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Gonna be a tough one to call for the next couple of weeks around Supertubos. The swell just isn't happening for a while. We're looking at a solid gap of nearly two weeks, from the 15th of July right through to the 27th of July, with absolutely nothing that's worth paddling out for. The water is a bit colder than average for this time of year, sitting at 64°, which is a bit of a shock to the system.
The first real sign of life won't come until Monday morning, the 27th of July. The wind is clean offshore from the N at 19 mph, and there's a pulse of 3ft swell from the NW, but it's a short-period 6 second windswell, so it'll be lumpy and weak. The combined energy is only moderate (106), so honestly, it's still a write-off for a quality wave.
The best bet in this whole 16-day window is shaping up to be Tuesday, the 28th of July. The morning has clean offshore winds from the N at 19 mph, and the swell picks up to 4ft from the WNW with a better period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is up to a moderate 209, so there's a bit more push. The afternoon stays clean with the same wind and swell, and the energy climbs to 227. It's not huge, but it's the most surfable we're going to see. This is a beach-and-reef setup, so with that moderate energy and clean conditions, it could be worth a look.
Wednesday, the 29th of July, sees the biggest raw numbers of the period. The morning has 5ft swell from the NW and an energy of 449, building to 6ft and 526 in the afternoon. The wind stays clean offshore from the N at 19 mph. Now, that's solid swell for Supertubos, and over 5ft it's getting too strong for beginners. It's a long period groundswell at 9 seconds, so it'll have some decent shape. Keep in mind, with that size and period, it's going to be a powerful wave, best left for the experienced crew.
Then on Thursday the 30th of July, the swell drops right off again. The morning is completely flat, and the afternoon has a 4ft clean swell from the WNW, but the energy is moderate (211). It's not a bad option if you missed the earlier days, but it's not the standout.
So, to wrap it up: the first couple of weeks are a washout. The only real window of opportunity is from the 28th of July, with the 28th offering the most consistent, clean conditions, and the 29th offering the biggest, most powerful waves for the experts. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but for now, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
