The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the menu for Baleal Reef. It’s a bit of a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks, so let’s pick through it.
We’ve got some clean, rideable waves on the way for the first day or two, but hold onto your boards because it gets a bit ordinary and lumpy after that. The real gems, the standouts, are tucked away at the end of the forecast, so we’ve got a bit of a wait on our hands.
First up, Tuesday the 18th looks pretty good. Morning session is the call. You’ve got a clean, 5ft swell from the NNW with a light offshore breeze, making for some fun, glassy conditions. Wave energy is moderate at 283. Tuesday afternoon, forget it; the wind swings onshore and it turns to mush.
Wednesday the 19th is small, with clean but ordinary 3ft surf from the NNW. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. The energy drops right off, too.
The next few days are a bit of a write-off. From Thursday afternoon through to Tuesday the 25th, we’ve got poor conditions. The swell does pick up, especially Friday the 21st through Sunday the 23rd, but it’s accompanied by strong cross-onshore winds which will chop it all up. Friday morning sees a jump in energy to 545, and it builds from there, but the quality just isn't there. It’s going to be a lumpy mess. That stretch of poor surf lasts about a week.
We finally see a glimmer of hope on Saturday the 29th. Morning looks promising with a clean 4-5ft NW swell and light cross-offshore winds, with a moderate energy of 376. That’s our first real breath of fresh air.
Then, the standout window. Sunday the 30th has a moderate offshore breeze and a solid 7.5ft NNW swell, with strong energy at 654. It’s a proper reef-break wave, but at this size it’s for the more experienced surfers among you.
But the one to circle on the calendar is Monday the 31st. Early morning is looking perfect. We’re talking 8ft of NNW groundswell with super clean, light offshore winds. The wave energy is cranking, with a reading of 912. This is the pick of the bunch – a proper, solid, clean session. It’s big and it’s powerful, so only the experts need apply. After that, it fades a little, and Wednesday the 2nd of September offers another clean, smaller option with a 5ft NW swell and light winds, a decent consolation prize.
Alright, that’s the picture. A long, bumpy stretch ahead, but there are some proper waves waiting for those who are patient. Stay stoked.
