The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for Mindelo. The wind is a bit on the nose for a good part of the outlook, so we’ve got to pick our windows carefully.

The first few days are pretty average. We see some small, short-period swell around the 2nd and 3rd, with a weak combined energy (55 to 91). The water is sitting at 67.3°, which is about normal for this time of year. Thursday the 3rd morning, we get a glassy moment with a tiny 2.3ft WNW swell, but it’s all pretty ordinary. Nothing to get excited about here.

We hit a bit of a lull in quality through to the 8th. The swell does pick up on the 7th and 8th – we see 4.9ft to 5.6ft waves from the WNW, but the wind is howling cross-shore, with energy readings up to 1046. That’s a lot of power, but it’s going to be a messy, lumpy mess. Not a good look for the average punter.

The first real standout is on Monday morning, September 14th. This is our best bet. We get a clean 4.9ft groundswell from the WNW with a long 13-second period. The combined energy is pumping at 918, so there’s some decent grunt. With light offshore-to-cross-off winds from the NE, Mindelo should be looking pretty tidy. It’s an advanced spot, and with a 4.9ft swell, it’s going to be a solid session for experienced surfers. It will be a bit of a wait, but that one is the clear winner.

There’s a smaller but still clean window on the morning of Tuesday the 15th. A 3.6ft WNW groundswell, also with that nice 13-second period, offers good conditions with cleaner winds again. The energy is moderate at 426. It’s a solid session, but not as strong as the Monday.

After that, the wind turns nasty again, and the swell drops right off, wrapping up the outlook with some weak, choppy 2ft options. Not worth the paddle.

The gap at the start is about a week of nothing worth writing home about, so be patient. For the best of it, mark your calendar for the morning of the 14th – that’s the standout.

Short Range Forecast

Mostly dry. Warm (max 29°C on Thu night, min 22°C on Wed afternoon). Wind will be generally light.
