The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for Mindelo over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: it's a flat spell. The first ten days or so are looking pretty grim for any real paddle surfing. The wave energy is just not there, with combined energy readings barely hitting 25 (weak) to start, and even when it climbs a bit, the quality is shot. We're talking tiny, weak waves blown out by onshore or cross-shore winds. The water temp is sitting at 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's not gonna help the surf.
The first hint of something that might get you out of bed comes on the morning of the 29th of July. The combined energy jumps to 184 (moderate) with a 2ft NW swell and a 10-second period, and the wind is a light offshore from the ESE, keeping things clean. The guidance says Mindelo is exposed to WNW swell, so this NW direction is a bit off, but with clean conditions, you might snag a few. It's still pretty ordinary, but it's the best we've seen in a while.
Then, on the morning of the 30th of July, we get a 3ft NW swell with a 10-second period and a cross-shore wind from the south. The combined energy is a solid 251 (moderate), but the conditions are described as marginal. There's a chance of a few waves, but it's nothing to write home about.
Honestly, the standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of the 2nd of August. We get a clean, offshore wind from the ENE, with a 2ft NW swell. The wave energy is still low at 53 (weak), but with clean faces and a bit of period, it'll be the most user-friendly it gets. It's a Sunday morning, so expect a few others out, but for the tiny waves on offer, the crowd factor is kinda moot.
Overall, these next two weeks are a write-off for any decent surf. The energy is weak, the swells are small, and the wind is rarely your friend. If you're a kite surfer, the afternoon of the 27th of July with a 6ft NW swell and 16 mph cross-shore wind might look appealing, but for a paddle surfer, it's a tough stretch. The forecast can always change, but for now, save your energy.
Rusty.
