The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cookin’ at Barra do Douro. I gotta be straight with you – the first week and a half is a real struggle. We’ve got a long, flat patch with barely a ripple, so don’t bother waxing up just yet.
The water’s sitting at a warm 68°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least it’ll be a nice swim.
From right now, through the 26th of July, it’s a total write-off. Tiny 1.0ft to 1ft slop, mostly cross-shore breezes, and the combined energy is laughably weak (24). It’s just not happening. The morning of the 22nd of July shows a glassy 1ft at 10 seconds from the W, but the energy is still a pitiful 40 – a real tease. Even the 26th of July afternoon bumps up to 4ft from the NW, but the wind is a messy cross-on at 12 mph, making it a choppy, poor excuse for a wave. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
Now, we start to see a glimmer of hope on the 27th of July. Monday morning, we get a glassy 3ft NW swell with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a moderate 133, and with that glassy wind, it’ll be clean. This is your first real window, but it’s still a ‘surfable but ordinary’ situation.
The standout for the whole period, and I mean the only one worth a special mention, lands on Wednesday, the 29th of July. The morning session at Barra do Douro is looking promising. We’ve got a clean 2ft swell from the NW, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is a light cross-offshore breeze from the NE at 6 mph, which will keep the faces tidy. The combined energy is a solid 120 (moderate). It’s not a monster, but compared to the rest of this run, it’s the best we’ll see. The swell direction is a touch north of the optimum W, but it’s workable. Keep in mind, this river mouth can be inconsistent, and crowds are possible here.
The 30th of July morning also looks clean with a 2ft WNW swell (11-second period) and a light SE breeze, but the energy is a bit lower at 107. It’s another option, but the 29th is the call.
The outlook from the 31st of July onward fades back into a small, windy mess, with the 2nd of August afternoon seeing a 19 mph cross-on wind that’ll just ruin it.
So, to sum it up: sit tight, stay patient, and if you can, get out on the morning of the 29th of July. That’s your one true shot at a decent, clean wave in this 16-day window.
Rusty.
