The Lowdown

Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next two weeks at Praia do Rock are a bit of a struggle. Right now, the surf is just not happening. We’re looking at a long, dry run of poor conditions stretching from Monday, August 3rd, all the way through Friday, August 14th. That’s nearly two weeks of chop, cross-shore winds, and messy little waves that just aren’t worth your time. The water is sitting at a pretty average 65°F for the time of year, so no surprises there.

The first real flicker of hope comes Saturday morning, August 15th. The wind goes glassy, and we get a clean 5ft swell from the NW, with a combined energy of 202 (moderate). That’s the standout of the whole run – a proper session to aim for. The swell is a touch short for a groundswell at 7 seconds, but with those clean conditions, it’ll be fun on the sandbar. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, so the size is fine for most. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.

The following Monday morning, August 17th, also looks promising. Another glassy morning, with a bigger 6ft NW swell from the NNW, and a combined energy of 324 (moderate). That’s a touch over the 5ft mark, so it might be pushing it for absolute beginners, but still very manageable. The period is short at 8 seconds, so it won’t have the punch of a groundswell, but the clean glass will make up for it.

Tuesday morning, August 18th, has a bit of swell (3ft from the NNW, 9 seconds, 234 energy) but it’s cross-shore, not glassy, so it’s just a marginal call. The rest of the days after that standouts are back to chop and onshore wind.

So, the bottom line: August 15th is the best bet. August 17th is a solid backup. The rest is a waiting game.

Rusty.
