The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Playa Aguieira.
This is a reef set-up, fairly exposed to the swell, and it breaks fairly consistently. The water is sitting at 65°, which is about 1° cooler than what’s normal for this time of year, so nothing too wild there.
The window kicks off on Friday the 21st, but the first few days are a write-off. You’ve got a moderate cross-onshore wind on Friday afternoon with a lumpy 4ft NW swell, just messy. Saturday the 22nd is flat and glassy in the morning, but the swell is tiny at 2ft, so not worth paddling out for. That flat spell keeps going through to Sunday morning, but then things start to turn.
Sunday the 23rd morning is the first real glimmer. The wind goes glassy, coming from the ESE, and a 4ft WSW swell with a 10-second period pushes in. The combined energy is moderate (379). The afternoon holds with a light offshore from the south, keeping it clean. That’s a solid session for a beginner-friendly wave.
Monday the 24th is a standout. The morning has a light offshore from the SSE, and the swell bumps up to 5ft from the SW, with an 8-second period. The energy is moderate (384). The afternoon holds at 6ft from the SSW. It’s clean, it’s got push, and for this break, that’s the best of the run. Tuesday the 25th drops off a little with a shorter period, and then Wednesday the 26th is a bit ordinary with a risk of t-storms, so don’t get too excited about mid-week.
The next real highlight shows up on Thursday the 27th morning. A clean 5ft WNW swell with a moderate energy (292) and a cross-offshore wind. That’s a good session. The following week has a few more mornings with clean conditions, but nothing that jumps out as a must-surf until the very end of the window.
Looking further ahead to the 2nd of September, there’s a promising pulse. Wednesday morning the 2nd has a 6ft swell from the west with an 8-second period, a light offshore wind, and strong energy (428). That’s a solid, powerful wave for this reef. Thursday the 3rd morning also looks clean with a 5ft west swell. That’s a good little run for the start of September, but it’s a long way off, so keep an eye on it.
Overall, the best surf of this outlook is on Monday the 24th of August and again on Thursday the 27th of August. The swell is up, the wind is friendly, and the reef will be working. Don’t bother with the first weekend unless you just want to float around.
Rusty.
