The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I've got the lowdown on Playa de Traba for the next couple weeks.
Look, we're kicking off with a bit of a slow start. The Friday 21st afternoon isn't worth paddling out for, with choppy, cross-onshore wind making a mess of the 6ft swell. We've got a wait on our hands for the first real chance.
That first window opens up Saturday morning, the 22nd. The swell drops to 4ft from the NNW, but the wind goes cross-offshore and it cleans right up. The wave energy is moderate (284), and it's clean, so that's where you want to be for a longboard session at Playa de Traba. The water is sitting at 62°, which is 5° colder than normal for this time of year, so it's notably chilly – don't forget the booties.
Sunday the 23rd is actually the standout of the first week. We've got glassy conditions in the morning with an easterly breeze that's nearly offshore, and in the afternoon it goes completely calm. The swell is a steady 4ft from the WSW with a 10-second period, giving you long, clean lines. The energy jumps up to a solid moderate level (405) Sunday morning. This is your call for the best waves of the weekend – small, glassy, and all yours if you're lucky with the crowd (it can get busy sometimes).
Monday the 24th morning keeps the clean cross-off wind with a 4ft SW swell, but the energy drops a bit (248). The week after that gets a bit messy. We get a few smaller windows of clean surf on the 28th and 29th, but the wind is stronger and the swell quality is more marginal. By the 31st and into September, it's mostly onshore, choppy, or cross-shore chop, with only occasional cleaner moments on the 2nd and 3rd of September, but those mornings see a bit more size (6ft to 7ft) with cleaner cross-off wind, making them a solid option for anyone who wants a bit more push.
Looking into the second week, Thursday the 4th of September has some cleaner moments with a long-period 10-second swell from the NW and a decent energy reading (540 up to 649), but the wind is a bit cross. It's promising, but not as certain as that Sunday.
The bottom line: Sunday the 23rd is your gem. Otherwise, pick your windows for the clean, smaller stuff on the 22nd, 24th morning, and the cleaner mornings on the 2nd and 3rd of September.
Rusty.
