The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s on offer for Playa de Traba over the next couple of weeks.
Truth is, this is a tough one to start. We’ve got a real dry spell from Tuesday, 18th August, all the way through to Monday, 31st August. That’s nearly two weeks of “poor surf conditions” with the wind blowing cross or cross-onshore, chopping up anything that tries to form. The swell is mostly short-period windswell, and even when the energy picks up a bit, the quality just isn’t there. For a spot that’s usually consistent, this is a long wait.
Water temperature is about what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
But just when you’re about to give up, the forecast finally lights up at the very end. The standout window is Tuesday, 1st September. The morning is the real deal. We’ve got a 5-foot swell from the NW, with a 10-second period – that’s a proper groundswell with some shape. The wind is glassy, dead flat calm, so the surface will be pristine. The combined energy is strong at 532. For a beginner-friendly spot like Playa de Traba, that 5-foot is perfect. That’s the session you want.
The afternoon of the 1st gets bigger, up to 7 feet from the NW with a longer 12-second period, and the energy jumps to a massive 1522. But the wind swings cross-onshore, which will put a bit of a crinkle on it. It’s also getting into that size where it’s a bit much for beginners. The morning is the clear winner.
Then on Wednesday, 2nd September, it gets serious for the big boys. We’re looking at an 8-foot NW swell with a 13-second period and a combined energy of 1894 – that’s very strong. The wind is a clean offshore, grooming the faces perfectly. This is big, powerful, and clean. At over 8 feet, it’s strictly for experts. Long-period groundswell at a beach break can sometimes make the waves a bit straight, but with that offshore wind and the size, it’s going to be a classic for the charger crew.
So, bottom line: forget the first two weeks. The action is on Tuesday, 1st September morning for the everyday surfer, and Wednesday, 2nd September for the experts. The long-range look is promising, but we’ll need to see how it shapes up.
Rusty.
