The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here, and I've been staring at the charts for Playa de Traba. It’s a bit of a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks, so let’s cut through the noise and talk about when to actually paddle out.

First things first, the water is running *much colder than normal* for this time of year, sitting at a brisk 62°. That’s a proper anomaly, so you’ll want the thickest steamer you’ve got if you’re heading in.

The outlook starts with a bit of a challenge. Friday the 21st is a write-off, so don't bother. The morning is small and cross-on, and by the afternoon it gets choppy and messy. That leaves us waiting until Saturday the 22nd. That morning, we get a clean little wave with a 4ft swell from the N, and a nice cross-off breeze. The energy is moderate (284), but it’s a good, clean beginner-friendly wave. The afternoon sees a jump in size to 5ft from the NNE, but the period drops to 7 seconds and the conditions get a bit weird.

Now, here’s where it gets fun. Sunday the 23rd is the standout session in this whole run. We’re looking at glassy, clean conditions all day. The morning starts with a 4ft swell from the WSW with a 10-second period, and the energy is moderate (403). By the afternoon, it’s still glassy with a 3ft swell from the WSW. This is as good as it gets for smooth, clean logs or a fun fish. For a beginner-friendly spot, this is magic. Just be aware that crowds can happen here sometimes.

The following week gets a bit more complicated. From Monday the 24th through Thursday the 27th, the surf turns small, windy, or just plain messy. There’s a stormy period on the 27th with an 8ft cross-on swell and strong winds. The energy ramps up to 904, but the conditions are poor and choppy – that’s expert-only territory if anything, but honestly, the wind will trash it.

We get a brief reprieve on Saturday the 29th. The morning shows a clean 6ft swell from the NW (energy at 673) with a cross-off breeze. The afternoon is similar but a touch smaller at 6ft. It’s very good, clean surf for a solid session, but it’s not quite the perfection of that Sunday.

After that, things fade again until we hit Thursday the 3rd of September. This is your long-range promise. The morning shows a solid 7ft swell from the NW with a proper 11-second period. The energy is strong at 1204. It’s a bit of a beast for a beginner spot, but for anyone with some experience, the combination of size and period could be excellent.

The last few days of the forecast (4th and 5th of September) hover around the 6ft to 8ft mark from the WNW/NW, but the wind stays cross or cross-shore, keeping the quality just marginal. The third week looks like it’s teasing us with size, but the conditions need to play ball.

To sum it up: Don't think about paddling out until Saturday the 22nd for a clean warm-up. Sunday the 23rd is the absolute pick of the litter for clean, glassy, fun waves. If you miss that, watch for the promising swell on the 3rd of September, but treat it as a promising long-range forecast – things can change.

Stay stoked.
Rusty.
