The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for the next stretch at Playa de Traba.

Right off the bat, the water’s sitting at 62°F, which is a solid 4°F colder than what’s normal for this time of year. That’s a notable chill, so you’ll want a thicker wetsuit, no question.

The next few days are a bit of a mixed bag, but we’ve got a couple of windows where it comes together. Friday the 21st is a write-off – messy onshore winds and a cross-chop, not worth paddling out for. Saturday the 22nd morning, however, is a bright spot. We’ve got a clean 4ft swell from the NNW with a light cross-offshore breeze from the east, and the combined energy is a modest 256 – light but lined up. The swell period is short at 8 seconds, so expect a bit of a fat, short-period wave, but it’ll be rideable and clean for beginners.

Sunday the 23rd is where it gets interesting. The morning session sees a 4ft swell from the WSW, clean with a light cross-offshore breeze, and the combined energy is 338 – still modest but better shaped. Then Sunday afternoon, the wind goes glassy – zero mph, dead calm – and the swell holds at 4ft from the WSW with a period of 9 seconds. That’s the standout of the first week. When the sea is glass, you don’t miss it. The break will be clean, smooth, and forgiving for the beginner-friendly setup.

Monday the 24th morning is still passable with a clean 3ft swell from the SW, but the wind picks up later in the day and the size drops, so don’t stretch it.

Things go quiet and a bit rough from Tuesday the 25th through to Thursday the 28th. The swell sticks around, averaging 5ft to 8ft, but the wind is consistently cross or cross-on, and the quality is poor. The combined energy on Thursday the 27th afternoon hits 1120 – that’s strong wave energy – but with a cross-shore chop and rain showers, it’s more of a windy mess than a surfable setup. If you’re into kite surfing, those afternoons might be worth a look, but for paddle surfing, it’s a no-go.

Friday the 28th is still marginal, with a 7ft to 6ft NW swell but messy cross-shore conditions.

Then we get another promising window on Saturday the 29th morning. The swell drops to 5ft from the NNW, the wind is a light cross-offshore from the SSW, and the combined energy is 504. The forecast says “very good surf conditions” – that’s the best call of the whole run. The period is 9 seconds, so it’s a short-period swell, but clean and manageable. Get on it early.

Sunday the 30th afternoon sees a jump in size to 8ft from the WNW, but the wind is cross-on and the swell period is short at 8 seconds, so it’s going to be lumpy and messy. That’s expert territory, and even then, not great.

From Monday the 31st through to Thursday the 4th of September, the surf is poor to marginal. The swell stays around 4ft to 6ft, but the wind is cross-on or cross, and the quality is low. The best you can hope for is a clean but weak 6ft from the NNW on Friday the 4th morning, but with no real standout conditions.

So, to wrap it up: the best surf of this 16-day window is Sunday the 23rd afternoon – glassy conditions on a 4ft WSW swell, perfect for a long, relaxed session. Saturday the 29th morning is also a solid call with clean, rideable waves. The rest of the time, you’re either battling wind or waiting for a cleaner window.

Rusty.
