Table - best surf conditions forecast for Playa de Traba over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks at Playa de Traba. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough run ahead. We’ve got a consistent break here, but the conditions are fighting us every step of the way for the first two weeks. The water is sitting at 62°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a good suit.
The pattern is pretty grim. For the first eight days, from Saturday the 11th right through to the weekend of the 19th, it’s just a string of poor surf. We’re looking at small, weak swell – mostly under 3 ft – with short periods, and the wind is almost always cross or cross-onshore, messing up the surface. There’s a brief moment Sunday morning (the 12th) where it goes clean with a light cross-offshore from the SSW, but the swell is tiny at 3 ft from the NW with a short 8-second period, so it’s barely worth paddling out for. Combined energy is weak to moderate at best. That’s about as good as it gets in that first week, and that’s saying something.
Then we hit the 20th of July, Monday. Swell picks up to 5 ft from the north, and by the afternoon it’s 6 ft. But the wind is howling out of the NE, 30-35 km/h, turning it into a lumpy, choppy mess. Energy is moderate, but it’s just not clean for the paddle surfer. If you’re into kite surfing, this beach-and-reef setup might start to look interesting with that cross-wind and building swell.
We finally get a whisper of hope on the 26th of July, Sunday morning. Swell comes up to 6 ft from the NW with a 9-second period, and the wind goes light cross-offshore from the SW. The combined energy jumps to a strong level. It’s still only a low quality call, but for the first time, it’s described as a “marginal” forecast rather than poor. That’s your best bet. It’s not glassy, but it’s the cleanest look we get, and the swell has some push. It’ll be a bit raw and not for beginners – that size is getting hefty – but for the experienced crew, keep an eye on Sunday the 26th morning. After that, the wind shifts again in the afternoon, so don’t sleep in.
Bottom line: a long, frustrating stretch of onshore slop and small surf. The only real standout is way out on Sunday the 26th, and even that’s a gamble. Keep your expectations low, but don’t write the whole window off just yet.
Rusty.
