The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, checking in from Playa de Traba. We've got a full 16-day window to look at, but don't get too excited too quick. The first week is pretty average, with only a couple of windows that would tempt me off the couch. The real action, and I mean proper size, shows up on the 28th, but it's not for everyone.
Right off the bat, the water's sitting at 63°, which is a touch cooler than what you'd normally expect for July – about a degree and a half below average, so grab the thicker spring suit if you're heading out early.
For the first few days, we’re looking at small, weak swell. Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are write-offs with that NE cross-breeze and messy, short-period slop. The combined energy is weak, barely hitting 195 on Sunday and 304 on Monday. Not worth the paddle.
Things perk up Tuesday the 21st. Morning is the call with glassy conditions, a clean 6ft of NNE swell (340 combined energy). That's your standout for the first week, but it's small and the wind is supposed to switch by the afternoon. Wednesday morning the 22nd is also glassy, but the swell drops to 4ft.
Thursday the 23rd to Saturday the 26th is a bit of a flat run. Tiny waves, 3ft or less, and a lot of onshore or cross-onshore chop. Not much to work with. There is a weird little blip on Sunday the 26th morning with a very long-period 1.0ft NNW swell (13 seconds) and glassy wind, but honestly, 1.0ft is barely a ripple, even if it’s clean.
The real news is Tuesday the 28th of July. We’ve got a massive 10ft NNW swell rolling in, with combined energy hitting a massive 1734! But here’s the thing – the forecast straight up says it’s too big for this break. This is a beginner spot (Playa de Traba), and that size, even with clean-ish cross-wind, is only for the experts, if anyone at all. The beach setup with that much juice is going to be a washing machine. Honestly, this looks more like a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing one.
Wednesday the 29th morning is the one to circle. The swell drops to a still-chunky 8ft from the N (9-second period), and we get light, cross-offshore winds from the NE. The combined energy is still a strong 1210, and the conditions are called "excellent for experienced surfers". This is your best shot if you've got the skills. After that, from the 30th onwards, the swell hangs around in the 7ft+ range, but the wind turns onshore or cross-onshore, and the period drops, making it choppy and ropy. Not great.
So, bottom line: there’s a lot of waiting. If you're a beginner, Tuesday the 21st morning is your glassy chance at 6ft. If you're a seasoned surfer, the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July is the standout – big, powerful, and clean. Don't bother with the rest of that first week or the end.
