The Lowdown

Alright, let me tell you about Playa de Traba. This stretch of sand is exposed to the north-west, so it’s a bit of a wind-swell magnet. The water’s sitting at 62°, which is nearly 5° colder than usual for this time of year… feels like autumn creepin’ in early, mate.

It’s a quiet start. Honestly, we’ve got a few days of smaller but clean options right off the bat. Saturday the 22nd, you’ll find a clean 5ft northerly swell with a 9-second period in the morning. Light easterly cross-offshore breeze has the face looking nice. The wave energy is only moderate at 325, so don’t expect a freight train, but it’ll be fun for a beginner.

Sunday the 23rd rolls in with a smaller 4ft swell from the west-southwest, but a 10-second period gives it a little more push. Cross-offshore winds early keep it tidy. Again, moderate energy (394). Monday the 24th is much the same – 3ft from the southwest, cross-offshore, clean.

Then Tuesday the 25th gets messy. Swell drops, wind picks up, and we get a short-period, choppy cross-shore. That lasts through to Wednesday the 26th where the wind cranks to 16 mph, even though the swell bumps to 5ft – it’s blown out for paddling.

Thursday the 27th morning shows a real flicker of hope. A clean 7ft west swell with an 8-second period and moderate energy (470). The wind is light cross-offshore… it’s borderline. But that afternoon, the wind swings onshore and chops it up.

Now, Friday the 28th morning is where it gets nuts. We’ve got a 10ft north-west swell rollin’ in with a 10-second period. The combined energy is *strong* at 1872 – that’s a lot of water moving. But here’s the catch: the wind is moderate cross-onshore at 12 mph, and the break is a beach setup. For a beginner, that’s way too much – 10ft is for experts only. With that wind, this is honestly more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle session. Too fat and blown for a good time on a surfboard.

The last real standout of this outlook comes on Sunday the 30th. It’s a small day – 3ft from the west-northwest, but with a 10-second period and *zero* wind in the morning. Glassy as glass. Combined energy is moderate at 210. This is the one to circle for the pros on a log or a fish. Clean, small, and perfect.

After that, the first week of September looks like a flat spell. Tiny swells, a lot of onshore wind, and scores are all zero. There’s about six days of nothing worth paddling for.

Then, on Saturday the 6th of September, we get a surprise. The morning calls for a 7ft swell from the north-northeast, but with a short 6-second period. Combined energy is moderate-high at 619. The wind is glassy, so it’ll look clean, but that 6-second period is short and weak, not much push. It’ll be a bumpy, short-interval cleanup set. Maybe a few fun ones, but not the deep, holding tube you’d want at 7ft. Sunday the 6th afternoon holds similar size but with onshore wind.

Best bets: If I had to pick just two standouts, it’s the Sunday 30th morning glassy 3ft for the smooth, longboard cruise, and the Saturday 22nd morning early clean 5ft for a decent first session of the window. Skip Friday the 28th unless you’re a big-wave charger – and even then, the wind is a killer.

Rusty.
