The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming up for Playa de Traba over the next couple of weeks. It's a bit of a mixed bag at times, but there are a couple of windows that'll get the stoke up.
The water is sitting at 62°, which is a solid 4° colder than what's normal for this time of year. That's way colder than usual, so bring the thickest rubber you've got – it's gonna be a shock to the system.
We start off pretty grim. Thursday the 20th of August and Friday the 21st are pretty much write-offs with onshore winds and choppy conditions, so I wouldn't even bother looking at the water. The swell energy is moderate, but the wind messes it all up. The first real glimmer of hope comes on Saturday the 22nd. That morning we've got a clean 5ft swell out of the N with a gentle cross-offshore breeze. Energy is moderate. It's a beginner-friendly height, so it's a good one for the learners to get out.
Sunday the 23rd is where my eyes light up. The afternoon session is looking like a special one. We'll see waves around 3ft from the WSW, but the wind is going glassy, dead calm (3 mph). The energy is low, but when it's like glass with clean conditions, that makes the most of what's on offer. That's the pick of the first week – a real gem of a session.
Monday the 24th keeps things surfable with a gentle offshore breeze, but only knee-to-waist high waves (3ft to 3ft) and weak energy. The rest of the week into late August gets a bit messy. Swell builds but the wind gets on it, creating lumpy, cross-shore chop. By Thursday the 27th, we're looking at a solid 8ft swell and strong energy, but the wind is howling cross-shore at 19 mph – that's a washing machine, not a surf. That's kite-surf territory, not paddle.
There's a long lull of poor-quality surf from the 26th right through to the end of the month. The wind just won't cooperate. The consistent swell (5ft to 7ft) isn't surfable because of the chop, so just sit this one out.
Now, if you're looking ahead, mark your calendar for Wednesday the 2nd of September. That morning is shaping up to be the absolute standout of the whole 16-day window. We've got a clean 7ft swell from the WNW with a glassy surface and hardly any wind (3 mph) from NNE. The energy is strong. That's solid, powerful, clean surf. The height is pushing expert territory, so it's for the crew who know what they're doing, but it could be a ripper.
After that, Friday the 4th of September morning also looks promising with a glassy 5ft swell, but the energy is lower. It's a good finisher to the run.
So, to wrap it up: the best on offer is the glassy Sunday 23rd afternoon for the smaller waves and clean conditions, and the absolute highlight is the Wednesday 2nd of September morning for the bigger, powerful, glassy swell.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
