The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's on the cards for Playa de Traba.
Well, the start of this run is a bit of a mixed bag. We've got a window of clean surf on Monday the 24th, but it's a small one. The real story for the first week is a lot of wind and messy conditions, with a couple of windows where it might clean up. The standout is going to be a very long-range swell that arrives on the 7th of September, but we've got a fair bit of waiting to do.
The first day worth paddling out is Monday morning, the 24th of August. Playa de Traba is seeing a 4ft swell from the SW, with a period of 8 seconds. The wind is light offshore from the SE at 3 mph, which is the key here – it’s going to be clean. The combined wave energy is moderate at 243. It's a good call for a beginner session, but don't expect much power.
From Monday afternoon right through to the end of the month, it’s a write-off. The wind swings onshore or cross-shore and gets up, and the quality drops out. There's a couple of days around the 29th and 30th where the wind goes cross-off, but the swell is small and the forecast is marginal. It’s a bit of a waiting game.
Now, we get a little flicker of hope on Monday the 31st of August. The wind goes offshore from the NNW at 3 mph, and there's a 6ft swell from the WNW with a 9-second period. The combined energy is a solid 548. It’s a bit of a gamble with the tide, but clean conditions on a bit of a push could be fun. Tuesday the 1st of September looks messy again, though.
The real gold is sitting out there for the second week. On Monday morning, the 7th of September, the stars almost align. The wind is light offshore from the S at 3 mph, and it’s glassy. The swell is only 3ft, but the period is a very long 14 seconds from the W. That’s groundswell energy, and the combined energy is a solid 686. This is the kind of clean, lined-up day that the points love. It’s a long way out, so don’t book the day off yet, but it’s looking promising.
The session to circle on the calendar is Tuesday morning, the 8th of September. We’re looking at a massive 10ft swell from the WNW with a 14-second period. The combined energy is a staggering 4365. This is expert territory only. The wind is cross-shore from the SW at 12 mph, which will put some chop on it, but the sheer power of this swell will be undeniable. For most of us, this is a day to watch, not paddle. For the crew with the biggest balls, it could be a session of a lifetime.
So, the first week is thin. The best bet is the clean but small window on the 24th, and then the long-range promise for the 7th and 8th of September. Stay tuned, forecasts can change.
Rusty.
