The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Playa de Traba over the next couple of weeks.
First off, we're starting with a bit of a slow grind. The surf is there, but it’s small and pretty weak for the first few days. The water is sitting at 17°, which is a solid 3° colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a good thick wetsuit if you're paddling out.
Sunday 23rd August kicks things off with a small 4ft swell from the WSW, period a short 9 seconds. The combined energy is only moderate (288). Winds are light and cross-off from the south, so the waves will be clean, but it’s pretty gutless. Monday morning the 24th looks a bit better with a 3ft swell from the SW and a glassy offshore wind from the ESE, keeping it clean. But again, the energy is low (220) and the period is short at 8 seconds.
From Monday afternoon through to the end of the week, it's a write-off. The wind picks up, messing things up, and the swell is small and confused. There’s a bit of a jump in size on Thursday 27th, with a 7ft swell from the west, but the wind is howling cross-shore, making it a lumpy, choppy mess. Not worth a paddle.
Then we get to a big one. Friday 28th August sees the swell jump to 12ft from the WNW. The period stretches out to 11 seconds, and the combined energy is massive at 2973. That’s a lot of water moving. Problem is, the wind is on it for the morning, and while it’s cross-shore in the afternoon, that’s a lot of power for a beginner spot. This is expert territory only. The wave comment says it’s predicted to be too big for this break, so only the most experienced should even think about it.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th drops back down to 7ft and 6ft from the NW, with cross-off winds, but the energy is still moderate and the conditions are just ordinary. Keep your expectations low.
Now, here’s the standout for the whole forecast. Monday 31st August morning. The swell is a solid 6ft from the WNW, period a nice 9 seconds, and the combined energy is a decent 497. But the magic is in the wind: it’s glassy. Flat calm. A light NNW breeze, absolutely no wind. That’s a rare treat for Traba, and it will make for some clean, fun waves. This is the best session on offer. The afternoon goes onshore, so get out early.
After that, the first week of September is patchy. The 1st and 2nd have some size (6ft to 8ft) but the wind is cross or cross-shore, and the periods are short and weak. Not great. There’s a long gap of poor conditions from the 3rd through to the 7th, with tiny, weak swell and poor wind.
Looking way out, Monday 7th September morning shows a promising 8ft swell from the WNW with a 9-second period. The energy is strong (1492) and the wind is cross-off from the SSW, keeping it clean. It’s a long way off, so don’t book the day off work just yet, but it’s one to keep an eye on as the forecast firms up.
Get that glassy Monday morning session if you can. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
