The Lowdown
Alright, old mate Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for our little stretch of coast.
Right off the bat, it’s not going to be a classic run. We’ve got a few windows of fun, but a lot of chop and cross-shore junk to wade through. The standout is going to be this coming Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing weird going on there.
So, Sunday the 23rd is our best bet. Playa de Traba wakes up with light rain and dead-calm glassy conditions. The swell is a clean 4ft out of the WSW with a 10-second period, giving us moderate wave energy (398). That’s proper fun waves for a beginner-friendly spot. The morning has zero wind – glassy as a mirror – and the afternoon holds some WSW breeze at 3 mph, still glassy. The waves will be clean and user-friendly all day. It’s a consistent break, so you won’t be waiting around, but you might have to share with a few others – crowds are listed as sometimes, so likely a few out.
Monday morning the 24th is still tidy with a 3ft SW swell and clean offshore SE wind at 6 mph. The energy drops a bit (243) but it’s clean. The afternoon turns ugly though, with a cross-shore NE breeze and tiny waves.
Tuesday the 25th is pretty ordinary – small and messy. Wednesday the 26th looks bumpy with strong cross-off winds and a rising swell that’s still poor quality. That stormy risk is around too.
Now, come Thursday the 27th, things get big. The swell jumps to 8ft from the WNW with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is strong at 1152. But the wind is cross-shore at 16 mph, producing a chop. That’s more of a messy, powerful wall than a clean wave. The swell is pushing over 5ft, so it’s edging into intermediate territory, and the cross wind makes it a real battle. That afternoon is similar with 8ft.
Friday the 28th is the big one, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. We’ve got an 12ft WNW swell with a long 11-second period and very strong energy (2931). The wind is cross-shore at 16 mph. The issue is, it’s predicted to be too big for this break. This is expert-only territory, and even then, the wind is not your friend. It’s gonna be a washing machine out there. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
We then drop off Saturday the 29th with a 7ft NW swell and cross-shore winds. It’s marginal, not great. After that, we’re into a long run of poor conditions. From Sunday the 30th right through to the 6th of September, it’s a lot of small, weak, onshore, or cross-shore junk. The periods get short and the energy is low. There’s a small window on Tuesday the 1st of September with a 6ft NNE swell, but the period is a pathetic 6 seconds and the wind is onshore – just poor quality.
So, to put it straight: if you want a wave that’s any good, you’re looking at Sunday the 23rd of August at Playa de Traba. After that, it’s a gamble with messy, big, or weak conditions until at least the 7th of September, which shows some hope with a 5ft NW groundswell (12-second period) but with onshore wind. Let’s hope the forecasts change, because a blank run like this is a bit grim for this area. Keep your eyes peeled.
Rusty.
