The Lowdown

Right, let’s have a squiz at what’s on offer for Praia da Amorosa over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there are a couple of windows that’ll get the blood pumping.

The water temp is sitting around 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be comfortable without a steamer.

First up, we’ve got a quiet start. Tuesday the 11th morning is clean and glassy with tiny 2ft swell from the NW, period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is weak (119). It’s surfable but very ordinary – better for a longboard cruise or a paddle. The afternoon gets messy with a cross-shore breeze, so don’t get your hopes up.

Wednesday the 12th morning is the real standout. The wind goes glassy, the swell lifts to 3ft from the W, period is 10 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate (221). This is clean, fun, head-high-plus surf. It’s a beach and reef setup, so it’ll be peeling nicely. The wind is dead calm, so expect silky conditions. This is the best on offer, no question.

Thursday the 13th morning has a little more size at 4ft from the W, but a light cross-shore breeze puts a slight wrinkle on it. Still surfable, but not as good as Wednesday. The afternoon gets blown out.

Friday the 14th and Saturday the 15th see a bit of a pulse. Saturday morning has 7ft from the NNW, but with a short period of 8 seconds and a cross-off breeze, it’s a bit lumpy. That’s expert territory at that size, and the wind won’t help. The afternoon is a mess with 35 km/h cross-shore winds.

Sunday the 16th morning is another little window: 4ft from the NNW, period 8 seconds, and a clean cross-off breeze. It’s not the best shape, but it’s rideable. The afternoons are consistently blown out for the rest of the week.

There’s a long gap of poor afternoons and average mornings right through until – wait for it – Saturday the 22nd morning. That’s over a week away. The morning of the 22nd shows a promising 4ft from the NW with a long 11-second period, combined energy of 535 (strong), and clean cross-off wind. That’s a solid groundswell, better suited to the reef sections here. It’s a standout in the long-range, but it’s a week and a half out, so keep an eye on it.

Sunday the 23rd morning is also worth a mention: 4ft from the NW, 10-second period, clean cross-off, and moderate energy (263). A repeat of decent but not epic conditions.

Overall, Wednesday morning the 12th is your best bet for clean, fun waves. The Saturday the 22nd morning is a promising long-range option, but treat it as a looker for now. The afternoons are mostly a write-off with strong cross-shore winds, so plan your sessions for the dawn patrol.

Rusty.
