The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, looking at the local scene for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got one spot to focus on, so let’s get into it.
The outlook starts off a bit of a mixed bag, with a lot of wind-ruined sessions and marginal conditions. The first few days are pretty grim, with strong cross-onshore winds and lumpy, choppy surf. The swell is there, but it’s just not clean. We’ll have to wait until Sunday the 23rd before things finally line up. From there, we’ve got a couple of standout windows, with the best of the best looking like Monday the 28th. There’s also a long wait for a clean glassy session right at the end of the run on Friday the 4th of September.
Esposende (river break) – This is a beginner-friendly river mouth, and it’s exposed to the west and northwest swells. The water is 65°F right now, which is about 2°F cooler than average for this time of year, nothing too unusual.
The first real chance to get wet comes on Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. The wind swings around to a light cross-offshore from the NE at 3 mph, cleaning things right up. The swell is 4 ft from the W with a 10-second period, which is a nice groundswell. Combined energy is solid at 346 (moderate). It’s a good, clean session for the confident beginner.
That afternoon, it gets even better. Sunday afternoon, the 23rd, the wind drops to glassy calm, 0 mph from the E. The swell bumps up to 5 ft from the WSW, period 9 seconds, and energy is 370 (moderate). It’s a beautiful, clean window. The only downside? It’s a fairly consistent break, but crowds are possible on a Sunday afternoon.
Now, the real standout is Friday morning, the 28th of August. This is the one to circle. The wind is glassy, 3 mph from the ESE, and the swell is a solid 6 ft from the NW, with a 10-second period. Combined energy hits 616 (moderate to strong). This is a very good surf window, with clean, peeling waves that should be easy to paddle into. The swell direction is a touch off the optimum, but the quality of the conditions makes up for it.
After that, the wind turns messy again through the end of August and into the first week of September, with a lot of cross-onshore and onshore conditions wrecking the quality. The swell stays around 5 ft to 6 ft, but it’s just not clean enough for a good paddle session.
Finally, we have one more clean window at the very end of the forecast. Friday morning, the 4th of September, the wind goes glassy again, dead calm from the SW. The swell is a smaller 4 ft from the WNW, with a 9-second period, and energy at 219 (weak to moderate). It’s a smaller day, but glassy conditions mean perfect, clean waves for the beginner crew. Good for a relaxed session to end the run.
If you’re looking for the best of the best, the morning of the 28th of August is your pick. The Sunday the 23rd is a close second for a fun weekend session.
Rusty.
