The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here.
First up, this is a rough stretch ahead for the Santo Amaro point break. We're looking at a long, drawn-out period of tiny to flat surf with mostly ordinary to poor conditions. The water temp is sitting right on the seasonal average at 69° – nothing unusual there.
The first week is a write-off. From Tuesday the 18th right through to Sunday the 23rd of August, you’re looking at knee-high slop at best, with barely any energy in the water. The combined swell energy stays below 100 (weak) for most of it. There’s a brief moment on Thursday morning the 20th where the wind goes glassy, but the swell is just 2ft from the WNW. It’s clean, but there's nothing to ride.
Friday the 21st of August morning sees a bump – 3ft from the NW with a moderate offshore wind. The combined energy hits a moderate 193. But the comment says it’s surfable but very ordinary. It’s a slight glimmer, but not worth getting excited about.
The whole week after that sinks right back into tiny, weak surf with fresh offshore winds that will make the water look nice but won’t have a wave to push you. We’re talking about a gap of nearly seven days where there’s nothing recommended.
Now, finally, we get a true standout. Look to Friday the 28th of August morning. Santo Amaro wakes up with a solid 5ft swell from the NW, a period of 9 seconds, and a strong moderate offshore breeze from the N. The combined energy jumps to a proper 338 (moderate to strong). The report actually says “expect good surf conditions.” This is the pick of the forecast. It's got size, it's clean, and the direction (NW) lines up nicely with the optimum SW direction for this exposed point.
Saturday the 29th of August morning is also worth a mention – similar 5ft from the NW with offshore N winds and energy at 449. Another solid window, though the wind is a touch stronger. The afternoon gets a bit questionable on the tide.
If you’re an advanced surfer, the stand-alone session is Friday the 28th morning. That’s your window. After that, it fades away again quickly into the first week of September. Promising, but a long wait to get there.
Rusty.
