The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Lookin’ at the surf outlook for Lagoa de Albufeira, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim stretch for the next two weeks. The forecast is filled with poor surf conditions and messy winds, so don’t get your hopes up for a proper session.

The first real chance to even paddle out comes on Monday, 27 July. The morning shows a little 2ft swell from the NW, and with the wind glassy, the water’s gonna be clean. But don’t be fooled – the wave energy is weak (74), and the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s tiny and gutless. It’s surfable, but just barely. The water temperature is sittin’ at 71°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit.

After that, the windows are few and far between. Tuesday, 28 July morning has a slight uptick in energy (124) with a 2ft NW swell and a 10-second period, but the wind is light onshore, makin’ it messy. Wednesday, 29 July morning is glassy again with a 2ft NW swell, but the energy is weak (67) – it’s just not enough to get excited about. Thursday, 30 July morning stays glassy with a 2ft NW swell, but again, tiny.

The only real standout in this whole 16-day run is Wednesday morning, 5 August. The swell picks up to 4ft from the NW, with a 10-second period, and the energy jumps to 335 – that’s moderate wave energy, the best we’ll see. The wind is a light cross-on from the NW, so it’ll be a bit bumpy, but it’s the most potential for a rideable wave. Still, the wind is not ideal, and the swell direction (NW) is not the spot’s best (optimum is WSW), so it’s not a classic.

For the rest of the period, it’s a long run of poor surf – onshore winds, choppy conditions, and weak swell. The afternoon of 5 August sees the swell hit 5ft from the WNW, but the wind is a fresh cross-on 30 km/h, so it’s lumpy and messy – more for the kites than surfers. After that, it’s back to the same story: cross-on winds and poor quality.

Honestly, this is a tough outlook. If you’re desperate, hit the glassy mornings, but don’t expect much. The consistent cross-onshore winds and short-period swell are keepin’ things flat and ugly. It’s one of those periods where the ocean just ain’t cooperatin’.

Rusty.
