The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking for Praia do Guincho.
We’re looking at a pretty rough start to the outlook, I won't lie to you. There’s a big, frustrating gap with nothing worth getting wet for. From Monday the 31st of August all the way through to Friday the 4th of September, it’s a write-off. The wind is hammering straight cross-shore and the waves are a lumpy, chunky mess – not even worth a paddle.
That north wind finally eases back on the morning of Saturday the 5th of September, swinging to a light cross-offshore breeze. The swell is small, only around 2.6ft from the WNW, but the clean conditions (265 combined energy) are a welcome sight after that poor run. It’s marginal, but it’s the first sign of life.
The real standout, the one you’ve been waiting for, is the morning of Sunday the 6th of September. It’s glassy – totally dead calm wind, with a clean 4.3ft groundswell rolling in from the NW at a nice long 12-second period. The energy is solid at 534, and those conditions are about as good as it gets for a clean, lined-up wave. This is the pick of the near-term, for sure.
Monday the 7th of September carries that clean feel with a light cross-offshore breeze again, but the swell drops to 2.3ft from the WNW. It’s got a very long period of 14 seconds and moderate energy (340), so if you’ve got a log, it could be fun, but expect long lulls between sets.
After that, we slip back into a long run of poor, choppy conditions from Tuesday the 8th through to Tuesday the 15th of September. That north-west wind just won’t quit, and the surf quality takes a real beating. There are a couple of marginal windows on the 12th and the 14th, but nothing you’d set your alarm for.
The best on offer, though it’s a long way out, is the morning of Tuesday the 15th of September. This is the one for the experienced crew. We’re looking at a solid 6.9ft of WNW groundswell with a very long 14-second period. The combined energy is massive at 1625, and the wind is light and clean from the NE. That’s going to be powerful, clean, and pumping. For a wave like Guincho, that’s a proper session, but only if you know what you’re doing – that’s expert territory.
