The Lowdown
Alright, crew, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you: looking at the next couple of weeks, it's a bit of a slow grind. There's no big, clean swell on the horizon, so we're going to have to pick our windows carefully. The surf is going to be small and a little tricky, but we've got a few moments where the conditions could line up for a fun, if not epic, session.
We're starting off with nothing really on offer for Thursday the 20th. The swell is tiny at 1ft and the afternoon wind is going to mess it up anyway. It’s a write-off. Friday the 21st sees a slight bump in energy, but the morning is the only real option. We're looking at 3ft of swell with a light offshore wind, which is a major positive and will keep things clean at Alfagar. It's a reef break, and it's inconsistent, but a clean 3ft on the reef could be worth a paddle. Saturday the 22nd has a bit more energy, but the wind is mostly cross-shore or cross-on, making it hard to get excited about. A passing glance at Sunday morning the 23rd shows a knee-high option with some longer period swell, but the wind looks suspect and the tide might be an issue, so it's not a confident call.
The energy builds through the start of next week, but so does the onshore wind. Monday the 24th sees the biggest swell of the period so far, hitting 5ft, but it's going to be blown out and messy. That's a no-go. The rest of that week is a mix of small waves and cross-onshore winds, with nothing really clean enough to get stoked on. The period from the 25th to the 29th is pretty weak, just small, short-period leftovers.
We get another little pulse around Friday the 28th with some moderate energy (112 to 125 in the combined energy) and a better wind direction. The morning has a moderate offshore wind with 3ft of swell, which will clean it right up. That’s a decent shout for a small-wave session. The following day, Saturday the 29th, also has a clean morning with a gentle offshore breeze, but the swell drops back to a tiny 2ft. It’s a fun board, not a performance board.
The first week of September looks a bit more promising, though. On Wednesday the 2nd, we get a bit of a swell pulse with wave energy climbing back over 100 (141 in the morning). The wind is offshore from the NNW in the morning, and we're looking at a clean 3ft. This looks like one of the better windows of the whole outlook. It's still small, but clean, glassy surf on the reef will be a lot of fun. The following day, Thursday the 3rd, has a bit more energy (173) and a longer-period swell from the WNW, but the wind turns onshore, which is a real shame. That one could have been the standout if the wind had stayed offshore.
Overall, we're working with small, clean windows rather than any big, powerful swell. The water is sitting at 70°F, which is about normal for this time of year. Keep your expectations in check, bring a groveler, and you might just find a fun one. I'd say the pick of the bunch is that Wednesday morning on the 2nd, with a couple of solid, clean mornings before that. It's not going to be a legendary fortnight, but there's always a ripple to be found.
Rusty out.
