The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Alfagar. It’s a rocky reef setup, known to be a bit inconsistent, and it’s not exactly firing for the next couple of weeks.
First up, we’ve got a bit of a flat spell. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is a touch cooler than usual for this time of year, not a big deal but worth a mention.
The real story is that there’s barely a wave worth paddling for. Most of the forecast is a write-off – small, weak swell, and the wind is usually a problem. The swell energy is very low, often just double digits (78, 56, 41) and the wave heights are tiny, mostly under 3ft. The swell period is short too, around 7-8 seconds, so it’s just weak, wind-driven slop. For a reef that likes a solid SW groundswell, it’s not happening.
There is a very brief flicker of hope on Friday morning, 21st of August. It’s a modest 3ft swell from the WNW, but we get a clean, offshore wind from the NNW. The water is a bit cool, but the conditions are clean. The swell is weak though (78 combined energy), so it’s just surfable, not exciting. After that, it’s a long, dry gap.
The next real standout doesn’t show up until Sunday, 23rd of August. The morning sees a jump in size to 4ft from the W, with a period of 12 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, and the combined energy hits 495 – that’s a solid pulse. But... the wind is onshore from the S, ruining the shape. The afternoon is similar, 5ft but cross-onshore. It’s all messy.
Honestly, the best of a bad bunch looks like Friday, 28th of August afternoon. We get 4ft from the NW with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the NW, keeping the surface clean. The energy is moderate (246). It’s not epic, but it’s the cleanest, most rideable wave in the whole window. The tricky part is that Alfagar rarely breaks as it is, and this NW swell might not wrap in perfectly, so it’s a gamble.
The rest of the period is a desert of small, weak, or wind-chopped waves. There’s a bit of glassy surf on the 25th of August morning and the 2nd of September afternoon, but the swell is tiny (3ft and 1ft). It’s barely worth getting wet.
So, to sum it up: the only real, if slightly shaky, standout is the afternoon of Friday, 28th of August. It’s the most promising day, but it’s a long way off and the break is fickle. For now, the bank is quiet, and the forecast is a long, slow grind. Hang in there, things can change.
Rusty.
