Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got the scoop on your local surf at Alfagar. This stretch of reef isn’t offering much joy over the next two and a half weeks, so I’ll be straight with you. The water sits at a warm 72°, a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a nice little bonus for a paddle, but the waves just aren’t playing ball.
We’ve got a long, dry run ahead. From now, through Monday morning the 6th of July, right up until Sunday morning the 12th of July, every session is labelled “poor surf conditions.” The swell is tiny – we’re talking 0.7ft to 1.0ft from the WNW most of the time, with a weak little 9 to 10 second period. Combined wave energy is in the doldrums, barely scraping double digits (11, 10, 9), which is basically flat. There are a couple of glassy mornings – Monday morning the 6th and Tuesday morning the 7th – with clean conditions and light winds, but honestly, you’d be chasing whitewash. A few afternoons get a cross-offshore breeze, which keeps the surface clean, but there’s just no power to ride. This is a beginner-friendly reef, but even beginners need something to push them in.
Finally, on Sunday morning the 12th of July, we get a slight pulse. The swell lifts to 2ft from the west, 9 seconds, with glassy conditions – no wind at all and no chop. The combined energy nudges up to 62, so there’s a bit of life in the water. The report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and I’d call it a 1 out of 10 – it’s barely worth wetting a wetsuit, but if you’re desperate, it’s the best we’ve seen all week.
That little window gets washed out again through the afternoons, with choppy cross-onshore winds. The next sniff of something better comes on Wednesday morning the 15th of July: 3ft from the NW, 7 seconds – short period, wind swell really – but glassy again, and the combined energy jumps to 101. That’s weak-to-moderate energy, and while it’s still “very ordinary,” that’s the first time we’ve seen three-digit energy. A small, clean, close-out wave for the reef, but at least you’ll get a few slides.
Thursday morning the 16th of July might be the closest we get to a standout. Swell builds to 3ft from the WNW, 8 seconds, with clean offshore winds from the NNE. Combined energy is 135, which is moderate, and the offshore breeze will hold the faces up. The reef here likes a SW optimum direction, and this is WNW, so it’s a bit cross, but with a moderate offshore wind and clean conditions, it’s the best session of the whole run. Still, it’s small – not enough to get excited about for anyone above beginner level.
After that, it fades back into tiny 1.0ft to 2ft slop for the rest of the 16 days. The winds turn strong offshore or cross-offshore from the NNW, keeping things clean but with next to no swell pushing through. The energy values dip back into the 20s and 30s. There’s no real size, no power, and no period to speak of. If you need a surf, your best bet is Thursday morning the 16th of July – clean, small, and the most energy of the lot. Otherwise, the forecast is a dud. Alfagar is inconsistent at the best of times, and this is one of those stretches where the ocean just doesn’t have it in her. Forecasts can change, but for now, leave the board at home and go for a swim in that warm water.
This is Rusty, signing off.
