The Lowdown
Right, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Alright, straight up—this is a slow patch for the region. The first real chance to get wet doesn’t come until later in the run, so expect a bit of a wait. The water is sitting at 69°, which is a bit colder than you’d normally expect for this time of year, so you might want a slightly thicker wettie.
The first hint of something rideable shows up on the morning of Tuesday, the 25th of August. The swell is small at 3ft from the West, with a short period of 8 seconds. The energy is low (110), so it’s weak. The wind is dead glassy though, so the surface will be smooth. Alfagar is a reef, and it’s inconsistent, so you’ll be scratching around for something decent. It’s surfable, but just barely. This is not a standout.
Things stay quiet for days. The next flicker of life comes on the morning of Friday, the 28th of August. The swell picks up to 4ft from the WNW, with a nice long 12-second period. The energy jumps to 716 (moderate), which feels more like a proper wave. The wind is light offshore from the WNW in the afternoon, making it clean. This is the best-looking session in the whole outlook. The break is exposed to the swell, and it’s a reef setup, so that long period should peel nicely. The bigger size combined with clean conditions makes this the one to aim for. Keep in mind, it’s an inconsistent break, so you’ll be waiting for the sets. The 4ft is a decent size, not too big for a confident intermediate, but beginners might find it a bit much. Crowds are possible here.
The Saturday morning, 29th of August, is a pale shadow of Friday. The swell drops to 3ft with an 11-second period and moderate offshore wind—clean but small, with low energy (133). It’s surfable, but only just.
After that, the run flattens out completely. From the 30th of August right through to the end of the forecast on the 7th of September, swell heights sit below 3ft, often dropping to 1.0ft or 1ft. The wind is all over the place, mostly cross-shore or onshore, and the energy is in the teens or single digits. The only real highlight of the second week is a tiny 2ft on the morning of the 5th of September, glassy, but it’s from the WNW with a 6-second period and energy of just 21—more of a lake than a surf.
If you want a wave, your best bet is Friday afternoon, the 28th of August. It’s the one true standout. Everything else is a flat spell or close to it.
Rusty.
