The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the coming weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – it's a bit of a slow start. The forecast is pretty flat for the first week and a half, with nothing really worth paddling out for. We're looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak waves at Alfagar. The first few days, from the 14th to the 24th, it's all small stuff, mostly under 2ft, and the wave energy is really low, barely cracking 100 (27-71). The wind is ok some mornings, but the swell is just not there. You'd be waiting around for nothing.
Now, things start to perk up a little around the 25th of July. That Saturday morning, we finally see a slight bump in energy. The swell pushes up to about 3ft from the NW, with a period of 7 seconds. The wind is offshore from the N at 12 mph, so it'll be clean. The combined energy hits 96, which is still weak but it's something. By the afternoon, the swell picks up a notch to 3ft from the NW, with the energy climbing to 161 (moderate). The wind goes cross-offshore from the WNW, so it should stay reasonably clean. It's not a world-class day, but it's the first surfable option we've had in a while.
Then, on the 26th, Sunday morning, we get a bit of a change. The swell drops to 2ft, but the period jumps up to 12 seconds from the W. That's a proper groundswell, and the energy is up there at 171 (moderate). With a 12 mph offshore wind from the N, it'll be clean. The 28th of July, Wednesday morning, looks similar – 3ft from the NW, 9 second period, 136 energy, and a gentle offshore from the N.
The single standout session here looks like the 29th of July. That Wednesday morning, we've got a 3ft NW swell, 9 second period, and the combined energy hits 165 (moderate), which is the highest energy reading we see. The wind is a light offshore from the N at 6 mph, keeping it clean. For this spot, that's about as good as it gets in this window. The swell direction is WNW, which is close to the optimum SW direction, so it should wrap in alright.
Overall, it's a lean period. The first week is a write-off, and the second week offers a few mornings with small but clean, rideable waves. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Rusty out.
