Alright, let’s get into it.
Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – for the next couple of weeks, the surf around Alfagar is pretty much a write-off. We’re talking about a stretch of days with practically nothing to get excited about. The swell is tiny and weak, and the conditions just aren’t lining up.
Starting off this Tuesday morning, the 7th of July, there’s a bit of glassy water with a tiny 0.7ft swell from the WNW, but it’s got no energy (10) and the period is short at 9 seconds. It’s just not going to break properly. That afternoon, the wind picks up from the WSW at 16 mph, turning it into a choppy mess. Wednesday the 8th is more of the same – a glassy morning but with a weak, short-period 1ft NW swell. Afternoon wind ruins it again.
Honestly, this pattern keeps on rolling through the whole first week. Mornings are often glassy or have a light offshore wind, but the swell never gets above 2ft. The combined energy barely cracks 59 all week, and that’s on the morning of Sunday the 12th with a 2ft W swell. Even then, 2ft with a 9-second period just isn’t going to give you a wave you can really sink your teeth into. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there.
Heading into the second week, from the 14th of July onward, we see a few more mornings with a light offshore wind from the NNW, and the swell hangs around the 1ft to 2ft mark. The energy climbs a little – the morning of the 15th shows 38, and the 22nd of July morning shows 46 – but it’s still a weak, inconsistent swell. The period is short, mostly 6 to 8 seconds, so these are wind swells, not groundswells. The afternoon winds are always a problem, either cross or cross-onshore from the SW or W, making things choppy.
What’s the best on offer? Honestly, there isn’t a standout. If you had to pick a window, maybe the morning of Sunday the 12th or the morning of the 22nd of July, when there’s a bit more energy and a light offshore. But we’re talking about knee-high slop at best. This break is a reef setup that’s inconsistent and exposed to the SW – and the swell is barely coming from that direction. For a beginner, these tiny waves are safe enough, but for anyone else, it’s a frustrating, long stretch of nothing.
This kind of blank run is more normal for the area; the forecasts can change, but for now, that’s the reality.
