The Lowdown
Alright, I’m lookin’ at the next 16 days for Beliche, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a bit of a mixed bag. This spot is a sheltered beach and point setup, best on a northwest swell, and it’s an advanced wave. The water’s sittin’ at 69°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year – you’ll want a wetsuit.
The truth is, the first week or so is pretty darn ordinary. There’s a lot of waiting around. Thursday morning, 20 August, we’ve got tiny 2 ft waves from the WNW with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is a weak 63 – it’s just not doing anything. Clean, light breeze, but it’s poor. Friday brings a bit more size, 5 ft from the NW, but the period drops to 8 seconds and the wind is howling at 19 mph offshore. The energy is moderate at 321, but the quality is poor, so I’m not keen.
We finally get a little glimmer on Saturday morning, 22 August. The swell is 5 ft from the NNW with a 10-second period, moderate energy at 403, and we’ve got a solid offshore wind at 12 mph. The forecast says “expect good surf conditions” – for a moment, it’s the best we’ve got. But it’s gone by the afternoon.
Then Sunday, 23 August, is a total write-off. The swell jumps to 7 ft from the WNW, with a long 12-second period, and the energy is strong at 1144 – that’s a lot of power. But the wind is onshore from the south, making it poor. Too big for beginners, and with that onshore wind, it’s just messy.
The rest of the first week is a slog. Monday through Thursday are all poor, with onshore or cross-shore winds, short periods, and weak to moderate energy. The only highlight is Tuesday morning, 25 August, when it goes glassy with 3 ft waves from the NW, but the period is a short 7 seconds and the energy is only 142 – it’s surfable, but very ordinary.
Friday, 28 August, morning shows a bit of promise again. 6 ft from the NW, 10-second period, moderate energy at 546, and a strong offshore wind at 16 mph. It’s marginal, but it’s clean. Then Saturday, 29 August, morning is the standout for the whole stretch. We’ve got 6 ft from the NW, 10-second period, the energy is moderate-strong at 821, and the wind is offshore from the north at 16 mph. The forecast says “expect good surf conditions” – this is the one to circle. The swell direction matches the optimum, the wind is clean, and it’s got some punch. It’s advanced territory, so don’t take the groms out.
After that, from Sunday, 30 August, through to Thursday, 3 September, it’s a desert. The swell drops, the wind picks up, and the energy is weak to moderate. The best of that is Tuesday morning, 1 September, with 5 ft from the WNW and a 9-second period, but the wind is a strong offshore 25 mph on Wednesday, which makes paddling out a real chore for that tiny 4 ft wave.
Then we get a late call. Friday morning, 4 September, brings a solid 7 ft from the NW, 8-second period, and the energy is strong at 601. The wind is offshore from the north at just 6 mph – light and clean. It’s good for experts, but it’s the best bet in the second week. The period is a bit short, so the waves might be a little lumpy, but with that offshore wind, it’ll be hollow enough.
Overall, Saturday 29 August morning is your best bet, and Friday 4 September morning is worth a look if you’re patient. The rest is a lot of waiting for clean windows.
