The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Beliche.
Truth be told, the 16-day window starts off pretty flat and stays that way for a good stretch. The first surfable waves worthy of a paddle show up on Tuesday the 14th of July, but it’s nothing to write home about. For the first several days, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves. Expect very ordinary conditions.
Tuesday morning the 14th sees a small 3ft NW swell with a short 7-second period, and the combined swell energy is a weak 91 (just barely making a ripple). A light NNW cross-offshore breeze keeps the surface clean, but it’s a real struggle session. That afternoon, the swell drops to 2ft and the energy falls to 71. Hardly worth wetting the suit.
Wednesday the 15th through to Sunday the 19th is a proper flat spell. The swell bumps along between 0.7ft and 1ft, energy readings drop into the teens and single digits (energy from 7 to 50), and the wind, while offshore at times, can’t make anything of it. It’s a blank run. This stretch runs over six days of pretty much nothing.
Then, a shift. Sunday afternoon the 19th, the swell jumps to 3ft from the NNW with a short 7-second period, and energy climbs to a moderate 126. Still “poor surf conditions” but the energy is there. Monday the 20th morning bumps up to 4ft NNW (6 seconds), energy at 120, and we get a moderate offshore wind. Surfable, but still very ordinary.
The standout though, and the only one I’d truly flag, lands on Thursday the 23rd of July and runs through the end of the period. By Thursday morning the 23rd, the swell fills in at 5ft from the NNW with a dreadful 6-second period, but the energy is a solid 175. The wind turns fresh offshore (NNW 35 km/h, about 22 mph). The problem is, this swell is short-period, messy, and by the afternoon it’s 5ft, still with 6-second period, blowing a strong 40 km/h (25 mph) offshore. The surf report says “poor surf conditions” and “strong offshore and clean but hard to paddle into”. For an advanced surfer at a beach-and-point break like Beliche, this is your window. The swell picks up further through Friday the 24th (6ft–6ft, 6 seconds, energy hitting 238–253) and Saturday the 25th (6ft–6ft, 7 seconds, energy flying up to 362–464). It gets bigger still into the following week. But honestly, with such short periods and that strong, clean offshore wind, the waves are going to be blown out, bumpy, and a real chore to paddle into. For the experienced crew, it’s the best of a poor bunch. Expect crowds to be likely – Beliche can get busy.
Water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild to report.
So, to sum it up: you’ve got a long flat spell from the 14th through the 19th, then a little bump on the 20th and 21st, but the only real swell arrives from Thursday the 23rd onward. It’s not pretty, but there’ll be power in the water for those willing to battle the strong wind. Not a classic forecast by any stretch.
