Alright, Rusty here. Let me break down what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks at Beliche.
Straight up, we’ve got a bit of a flat start. The first couple of days are pretty much a write-off for any kind of decent surf. You’re looking at waist-high slop tops, and it’s not going to get your heart racing. The real story kicks off later on, so don’t be in a rush.
Looking at the first real taste of something rideable, it’s Saturday, July 4th. Morning will see tiny 2ft lines from the WNW with a period of 11 seconds, giving a weak combined swell energy of 126. It’s surfable, but the conditions are far from perfect. The afternoon shapes up a bit better – the wind swings to a light offshore from the north at 3 mph, grooming those 2ft sets from the NNW. The period drops to 9 seconds, so it’s more of a wind swell, but at least the face will be clean. It’s still not what I’d call pumping, but we take what we can get.
The middle of the week, from Sunday the 5th through to Friday the 10th, is a tough one. Swell sizes hover around that knee-to-waist range, and the energy is very weak. You’ll see combined swell energy values barely cracking 44 (Sunday morning) and often sitting below 40. The wind is all over the place, mostly cross-offshore or straight cross. There’s the odd glassy moment, like Sunday morning with a glassy 2ft from the NNW, but the period is a super short 7 seconds, meaning those waves will just crumble. Honestly, it’s a lot of paddling for very little reward.
The first real uptick in swell energy starts on Saturday, July 11th. The morning swell jumps to a 3ft from the WNW, but it’s still a short period of 6 seconds, and with a 19 mph cross-offshore wind, it’s gonna be messy. The combined swell energy hits 93, which is still weak. Sunday the 12th sees stronger swell with energy jumping to 220 in the morning and 329 in the afternoon, pushing waves to 5ft from the NW. But the wind is howling at 25 mph, making it a battle. The morning has a strong offshore, which cleans up the face, but the period is a short 6-8 seconds, so it’s going to be a choppy, difficult paddle. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
By Tuesday, July 14th, we get a little bit of a breather. The early morning sees a moderate 3ft from the NW with a period of 11 seconds. The wind is a gentle offshore from the NNW at 9 mph. The combined swell energy is 188 (moderate). The score for that window is a 1 out of 10, described as "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." It’s the most surfable window we’ve seen, but it’s still not a classic.
The real standout, and the one I’d mark on the calendar, is Sunday, July 19th. The morning delivers a solid 4ft from the NW, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined swell energy is 277 (moderate to strong). The wind is a moderate offshore from the NNW at 16 mph, keeping it clean. This is the best looking swell of the whole forecast, but it’s 16 days out – so long-range and promising but less certain. If you can hold out for that, it’s your best bet. The size is still okay for intermediates, but for beginners, that 4ft might be a bit much.
Overall, it’s a lean run for Beliche. This blank run is fairly typical for this sheltered spot when the swell direction and wind don’t line up. Keep an eye on that July 19th window.
