The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the menu for Beliche over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow start, but there’s some real potential hiding in the back half of the forecast.
The first few days are pretty flat and underwhelming. There’s a tiny bit of knee-high slop around Thursday the 20th, but it’s not worth getting wet for. The swell is weak, with energy readings down in the 40s and 60s, and the whole setup is just messy. You're better off doing something else that day.
We finally get a pulse of proper swell on Friday the 21st. It’s chest-high sort of energy, with a reading of 314, but the wind is howling offshore at 19 mph, which is making it messy and blown-out. The waves are there, but the quality is poor. Saturday the 22nd is a bit better managed, with a moderate offshore breeze and the swell starting to clean up. The energy is moderate at 403, and you’ll find some clean, shoulder-high lines, but it’s still not the standout of the window.
Then we hit a bit of a lull. Sunday and Monday see the swell bump up in size—up to 6ft or so—but the wind turns onshore, blowing from the south and southwest. The water gets chopped up, and it’s just not going to be a fun paddle. The energy is solid, into the 700s, but the wind kills it. Tuesday the 25th it drops right back down and goes glassy, but you’re only left with knee-to-waist high dribble, so it’s not worth the effort.
The rest of that first week is pretty average. Small swells, mixed winds, nothing special. The energy stays low, mostly under 300, and the waves are just lacking any punch. You’re waiting.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Fast forward to Friday the 28th. We’ve got a proper NW groundswell filling in, with energy ramping up to over 600. The morning is looking crisp and clean, with a moderate offshore breeze and head-high plus sets. This is the first real standout. There’s also a bit of a pulse on Saturday morning, but the wind is howling at 22 mph, so it’ll be a wild one. The real gem in this stretch is Sunday the 30th. The swell is holding at a solid 5ft, the energy is strong at 594, and we have a moderate offshore wind keeping the faces clean. That morning session is going to be firing.
Looking further out, into the first week of September, there’s another strong push. Wednesday the 3rd looks like the pick of the entire period. The swell is a solid 6.5ft, with energy building to a strong 778 and climbing to 880 by the afternoon. The wind is light and offshore, and it’s looking like clean, powerful, head-high to slightly overhead waves. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. It’s a week and a half out, so treat it as a promising possibility rather than a guarantee, but it has all the ingredients.
Also, keep an eye on the 4th of September. The swell drops back a touch to a still-solid 5.5ft, but the wind is light and cross-offshore, so it should still be a quality day with clean lines.
Beliche is a beach and point setup, so with these longer period swells (10 seconds and above), you might find it breaking a little too straight in the beach sections. The point will be your friend on those days, as it can handle the longer period energy much better. The water temp is running about a degree and a half colder than usual for this time of year, so a fresh 69.1°, it might feel a touch nippy after a while.
Crowds are often an issue here, so on the good days, expect some company out there. It's a fairly consistent spot, so there should be waves for most of this window, but it’s the big pulses at the end that are going to be worth the wait.
Stay stoked.
