Alright, Rusty here. Let’s size up Costa Nova for the next 16 days.
Honestly, it’s a pretty quiet outlook overall. The first week is mostly small swell and messy wind – nothing to get fired up about. The best chance comes later on, but it’s a ways off and not locked in yet.
First chance to paddle out is Friday morning, July 3rd. We’ve got a 2ft NW swell with an 11-second period – that groundswell will have some push. Wind is light cross-offshore from the NE at 6 mph, keeping things clean. Combined swell energy is moderate at 249. Water temp is about 65°, normal for the season. This is a beach and jetty setup (Costa Nova), and crowds can pop up. Morning window is your best bet.
After that it goes flat and funky. Saturday July 4th morning is glassy with a 2ft WNW swell, period 10 seconds, and no wind – clean but weak, energy only 146. Surfable but nothing special. From Saturday afternoon all the way through Friday July 10th, the swell stays tiny and the wind turns cross-onshore or onshore almost every session – a real gap of several days with nothing worth wading in for. Swell rarely hits 2ft in that stretch.
Things try to pick up Saturday July 11th morning with a 2ft NW swell and 11-second period, energy 153, but the wind is cross-on and lumpy – still poor quality. Afternoon no better.
Sunday July 12th morning jumps to 6ft from the NNW, but the period is short at 8 seconds, and the wind is cross-shore from the south at 6 mph. Energy is strong at 411 – but it’s a short-period windswell, messy on a beach break. Not clean enough to get excited about. Afternoon is onshore junk.
Monday July 13th morning still has 5ft from the NNW with a 7-second period – energy 268 – but it’s choppy and cross-on. The rest of that week stays small and poor. A few glassy mornings around Thursday July 16th are tiny – 3ft, weak (84 energy) – surfable but very ordinary.
Now here’s the one to keep an eye on: Friday July 17th morning. Swell hits 5ft from the west, period 9 seconds, with light NNW wind at 6 mph – cross-on but light. Combined energy is 377 – strong. That’s the biggest, most energetic swell of the forecast. It’s a beach break so might be a bit crumbly, but it’s the best of the bunch. Saturday July 18th morning still has 4ft from the WNW, period 9 seconds, light winds – energy 261 – also worth a look.
Just remember, these late sessions are over a week out – promising but not set in stone. For this stretch, that Friday the 17th is the one to pencil in.
Rusty.
