Table - best surf conditions forecast for Costa Nova over the next 16 days.
The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our stretch of coast. We’ve got a 16-day window ahead, but honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Surf’s on the table, but we’re going to have to pick our moments carefully. The wind is the main culprit, keeping things from coming together cleanly for most of the run.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Sunday morning, August 23rd. The water is sitting around average for this time of year, so nothing wild there. We’ll be at Costa Nova with a clean 6 ft of swell from the west, and a light, cross-offshore breeze. The period is a solid 10 seconds, giving those waves some shape. The combined energy is looking healthy at 635 (moderate), and it’s the best we’ll see for a while. This is the standout session for the first week. It’s not huge, but it’ll be fun.
After that, things get messy. From Monday the 24th through to the end of the month, we’re looking at a lot of poor surf conditions. The wind is either onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell is mostly weak and short-period. The 28th of August sees a bigger pulse of swell, hitting 8 ft on Friday afternoon, but with a strong cross-onshore wind, it’s going to be a choppy, blown-out mess. That’s more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle session.
We hit a bit of a lull right at the start of September, with very small, weak surf and no real quality. But then, the longer-range stuff starts to look a bit more promising, though it’s less certain. Thursday, September 3rd, and Friday, September 4th are the ones to circle on the calendar. We’ve got a proper groundswell rolling in from the NW, with a very long period of 12 seconds. The swell is solid, around 7 ft to 7 ft (combined energy 1131 to 1276, strong). The morning winds are light and cross-shore, keeping things relatively clean. The long period means these waves will have plenty of punch and long gaps between sets, so paddling out won’t be a war. But at 7 ft, this is getting into expert territory, so if you’re a beginner, it’s a no-go. The afternoon winds do pick up onshore, so get it early.
So, to wrap it up: Sunday the 23rd is your best bet for a clean, fun session. For the bigger, more powerful stuff, keep an eye on the 3rd and 4th of September, but take that long-range promise with a pinch of salt. The rest of the time, we’re dealing with a lot of wind and chop.
Stay stoked, and keep your eye on the horizon.
