The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Costa Nova.
Honestly, the next week and a half is a bit of a grind. Right up until the 22nd of July, we’re looking at mostly tiny, weak, and messy conditions. It’s a real struggle to find anything worth paddling out for. There’s a lengthy gap from now until the 22nd where the surf is just too poor to recommend.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on the morning of Wednesday, 22 July. It’s tiny, with a weak 1ft swell from the WNW, but the wind goes glassy. That’s your window for a longboard or a foiling session when it’s clean but small. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
The real standout, and the only one I’d get excited about, is Sunday, 26 July into Monday, 27 July. The swell builds to a solid 7ft to 8ft from the NNW, with moderate wave energy (654 combined energy). That’s a legitimate size, and with the early morning winds swinging light and variable, it could be proper. The period is short (8 seconds), so it’s a windswell, not a groundswell, meaning it’ll be a bit crumbly and peaky. But for a beach break, that can still be fun. The downside? The size is pushing into expert-only territory, especially if it gets a bit unruly. The afternoon winds on Sunday get strong and cross, so it’s a morning mission only.
If the swell is just too big and messy for you on the 26th, the morning of 27 July is also worth a look. The swell drops slightly to 7ft, but the winds are light and cross-shore, offering a cleaner window. This is a big, gnarly beach break though, so if you’re not confident in overhead surf, give it a miss.
The second week offers a few more marginal mornings, like the 30th and 31st, with 5ft to 6ft NNW-NW swells, but the winds are mostly cross or cross-on, keeping the quality average. Nothing compares to the 26th and 27th.
Rusty.
