Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at Costa Nova.
Honestly, the first couple of weeks are a tough watch. We’ve got a long, flat spell with hardly any energy. For days on end, the wave is tiny, the wind is messy, and the conditions just aren’t worth paddling out for. You’re looking at a real dry run from Tuesday the 7th right through until pretty much the end of the week after that. A few mornings might tease you with a little pulse, but the combo of small swell and cross-onshore chop makes it a frustrating wait. Don’t bother.
The only real glimmer in that first stretch is Saturday morning, July 11th. The combined energy is still weak, only 115, with a 2ft WNW groundswell pushing through at a nice long 11-second period. The wind? Glassy. Absolutely dead calm. That’s a rare treat for this stretch and it’ll be clean, even if the waves are small. For a patient surfer on a log, that morning might offer a quiet, glassy session all to yourself. But keep your expectations low on size.
Now, fast forward to the second week, and there’s a bit more life. The real standout is Tuesday morning, July 21st. We get a 6ft swell from the NNW (moderate energy at 356 – starting to get some real grunt), with glassy conditions again. That north-west angle with zero wind makes for clean faces. The period is a short 7 seconds though, which means it’ll be a bit lumpy and close together – more of a punchy beach break. At nearly 6ft, that’s expert territory.
Then Wednesday morning, July 22nd, offers another chance. The swell holds at 7ft from the NNW, but here the wind swings around to a light SSE cross-offshore, cleaning the waves up nicely. The combined energy is up at 491, so there’s some proper push. Again, short period means raw power rather than long lines. This is for experienced surfers only.
So there you have it. The first week is a write-off. The standout is Tuesday the 21st morning, with glassy conditions and real size, but it’s big and punchy. If you’re an expert and you can wait, that’s your window.
Rusty.
