The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Costa Nova has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
It’s a tough stretch ahead, I won’t sugarcoat it. For the vast majority of the 16-day window, we’re looking at either tiny, weak surf, or blown-out conditions. There’s a long dry spell for decent waves, but just when you think it’s all over, a little window of opportunity might open up right at the very end.
The first action we see is on the morning of Thursday the 30th of July. This is the one to keep an eye on. The wind is forecast to swing offshore from the ENE, which is a big deal for this spot. That will clean things up nicely. We’re looking at some waist-to-chest high swell, around 5ft, coming from the NNW. The combined energy is moderate at 225, so there will be some push to it. The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year at 65°. This is the standout of the whole forecast, and it’s the only time the conditions really come together for a decent paddle. However, after that morning window, the wind swings cross-onshore and the swell gets a bit bigger, up to 6ft, but it turns messy.
Before that, from Wednesday the 15th right through to the morning of Wednesday the 29th, it’s pretty flat and grim. For nearly two full weeks, there’s just no quality to be found. We get occasional pulses of chest-high swell around the 20th and the 25th of July, but the wind is never in the right spot. It’s either glassy with almost no swell, or there’s a little bump but blown sideways. The periods are generally short, under 8 seconds, so the waves are weak and crumbly.
The afternoon of Thursday the 30th sees the swell pushing into the 6ft range, which is getting a bit too much grunt for beginners, but with the cross-onshore wind it’s going to be a choppy mess. Probably more of a kite session than a surf session by then.
So to sum it up: if you’re keen, pencil in the morning of Thursday the 30th of July. Get there early for the offshore wind and clean lines. The rest of the month is a write-off.
Rusty.
