The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let me tell you about the upcoming surf for Costa Nova. It's a bit of a mixed bag, and you'll need to be patient.
The first week is pretty flat and uninspiring, with a run of small, weak swells and mostly unfavourable winds. The water temp is a touch warmer than usual at 67.8°.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on the morning of Monday the 27th of July. We've got a bit of a pulse from the NNW, with swell heights around 4.9ft. The combined energy is moderate at 369, and the wind is light cross-onshore. It's not ideal, but it's the best we've seen in a while. The kicker is that by the afternoon, the wind cranks up to 18.6 mph from the NNW, making it pretty lumpy and messy. So, the morning is your window if you're keen.
The real standout, and the only time I'd get properly excited, is the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July. The swell is up to 6.9ft from the NNW, with a period of 9 seconds, giving it some decent energy (660). The wind is light from the N, which is a cross-shore, creating small, clean ripples. This is the best combination of size and clean conditions on offer. It's a solid intermediate swell, so not for the beginners, but for those with some experience, this is the one to circle. The following morning, Thursday the 30th, looks similar too, with light NNW winds and a 6.9ft swell, so that's another good option.
After that, the swell sticks around at 4.9ft to 6.9ft, but the wind is mostly cross-onshore, keeping the quality marginal. The week of the 31st of July and into August sees the swell ease off, but the wind remains a problem. The best bet is to hit the early morning windows when the wind is lighter.
So, to sum it up: there's a lot of waiting, but the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July is the standout. Get out there early for the cleanest lines.
