The Lowdown
Hey there, it’s Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s coming up at El Sardinero – Segunda (El-Sardinero). This is a beach-and-rocks setup, fairly exposed and handling swell from the NNW. Right now, the water’s sitting at 72°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
Gotta be straight with you – the first week or so is a real struggle. We’ve got a long, quiet spell stretching from Sunday the 23rd all the way through Wednesday morning the 27th. Swell is tiny, mostly under 2 ft, with poor conditions flagged for every session. The one brief highlight in that stretch is Tuesday morning the 25th, with glassy conditions, but the swell is only 0.3 ft from the NW with a 13-second period – not enough to paddle for.
Things finally start looking interesting on Thursday morning the 27th. The combined swell energy jumps to 208, with a 4 ft NW swell at 8 seconds, and a light cross-shore wind cleaning it up a bit. The wave comment still says poor, so it’s not going to be great, but at least there’s some push. Thursday afternoon gets messy with a strong offshore breeze at 25 mph from the west – clean but hard to paddle into.
Now, the standout window arrives on Friday the 28th morning. This is the one to circle. We’ve got a solid 10 ft NW groundswell with a 12-second period, and the combined energy is a meaty 2483 – that’s serious power. Winds are a light cross-offshore, keeping things clean. The comment says excellent for experienced surfers, and that’s spot on – over 8 ft means this is expert territory. The break is fairly consistent, but crowds are sometimes an issue, so try to get in early.
Friday afternoon still has decent 8 ft NW swell at 11 seconds, but the wind picks up to a moderate cross-offshore, and the score drops to marginal. Still worth a look if you’re experienced.
Saturday the 29th morning brings a 6 ft NW swell at 10 seconds with glassy winds – calm, clean, and the comment says expect good surf. Combined energy is 597, solid moderate energy. This could be the best balance for intermediate surfers, as it’s under the 8 ft expert-only threshold but still has enough size to be fun.
After Saturday afternoon, we drop back into mostly flat or tiny conditions, with just a few weak pulses. Monday the 31st onward shows little to nothing until Saturday the 5th of September, when a 4 ft NW swell shows up but with onshore winds spoiling it. Even Monday the 7th brings only small NW groundswell with a very long 19-second period – that sort of long period tends to wrap better at reef or point setups, and at a beach-and-rocks spot like this, it might break a bit too straight.
Bottom line: Friday the 28th morning is your standout – big, clean, expert-only. Saturday the 29th morning is the next best, offering decent size and glass for intermediates. The rest of the 16-day window is mostly flat or poor. Stay tuned, though – forecasts can change.
