Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s be straight about it: the next two weeks at El Sardinero - Segunda are going to test your patience. There’s a long, dry stretch of tiny or non-existent surf coming up, so don’t rush to load the board.
Looking at the whole picture, the first solid recommendation doesn’t show up until Sunday the 12th of July. Before that, from July 4th right through until midday on the 12th, it’s mostly flat or dribbly. The swell energy is barely registering. On the 5th we see a tiny 0.7 ft WNW swell (9 energy), and that’s about as good as it gets until the second week – meaning, not good at all. Winds are often onshore or cross-off, and the combined energy values sit in the weak range under 100. It's a full eight-day gap with nothing worth paddling for.
Things start to flicker on Sunday the 12th of July afternoon. The swell jumps to a more promising 3 ft from the NW with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is finally in the moderate zone at 162. Winds are cross-off from the NW at 12 mph, so it’s clean. It’s surfable, but honestly, it’s ordinary – a 1/10 rating is about right. Monday morning the 13th shows a similar picture: 3 ft NW, period 8 seconds, energy at 102, light cross-off winds. Still, nothing to get excited about, but if you’re desperate for foam, those windows are your best bet.
The true standout in this bleak outlook is Friday the 17th of July morning. We see a bigger swell – 4 ft from the NW with a 9-second period and energy jumping to 275, which is solid moderate strength. But this is where it gets tricky. The wind is cross-on from the NE at 6 mph, not ideal. The wave comment says marginal, and the score is only 1/10. It's the biggest push of the forecast, but the quality just isn’t there. It’ll be a bumpy, lumpy mess for surfing, so if you’re into kiting, this setup is more interesting than paddle surfing.
One break to mention is El Sardinero - Segunda, a beach and rock setup. It’s fairly consistent and exposed to NNW swell, but crowds are sometimes a factor. On a 3 ft or 4 ft day, it might be too much for beginners, especially with that short period. The direction is good for the break, but with cross-onshore or onshore wind forecast for most of the bigger days, the clean conditions are rare.
On the water temperature front – at the start of the period on the 4th, the water is sitting at 71°F with an anomaly of 5°, which is much warmer than normal for July. That warmth sticks around in the background, but it doesn’t save the surf.
Overall, if you can wait until the 19th, Sunday morning shows glassy conditions with a 3 ft NW swell and energy at 124. That’s clean but underwhelming. The second week has a few pulses, but nothing that rises above ordinary. The forecast confidence drops the further out you go, so that 19th window is promising but less certain.
To sum it up: don’t plan a trip around this forecast. If you’re local, keep an eye on the 17th morning for the biggest push, but be ready for crummy conditions. The rest is a waiting game. Forecasts can change, but right now it’s a poor run.
Rusty.
