The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Santander’s got cookin’ for us over the next couple of weeks. We’re gonna be talkin’ about El Sardinero - Segunda for the whole run.
First up, the water’s sitting at about 73°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Not a bad thing for a long session.
Right, so the outlook for the next week or so is about as flat as a pancake. We’ve got a big dry spell from now through to Wednesday, August 26th. There’s nothing at all to get excited about. Tiny ripples and glassy mornings, sure, but no push. You’re better off findin’ somethin’ else to do.
Thursday morning, the 27th, things finally wake up. The wind swings offshore from the West at 12 mph, and we get a solid 6 ft of NW swell with an 8-second period. The combined energy is moderate at 446. It’s still a bit short-period, so it won’t be the cleanest lines, but it’s rideable and blown glassy. That’s your first real chance to paddle out.
Then we get to Friday afternoon, August 28th. This is the standout session of the whole run. You’ve got a clean 10 ft NW swell rolling in with an 11-second period – that’s proper groundswell. The combined energy is pumping at 1984, so that’s strong wave energy. The wind is a cross-offshore from the NW at 9 mph, keepin’ it clean. This is big, powerful surf. At over 8 ft, this is for experienced surfers only. It’ll be steep, heavy, and with that long period, it’s gonna be lining up better at the point and reef sections than out in the middle of the bay. Crowds are possible here, but on a swell this size, it might thin out the pack a bit.
After that, we drop back down, but there’s a decent window. Thursday morning, September 3rd, is another proper session. You’ve got a 7 ft NW swell with a very long 13-second period, so that’s a deep ocean groundswell. The energy is strong at 1407. Light offshore wind from the WSW at 6 mph. Again, that’s a beefy wave – one for the experienced crew. Friday morning, September 4th, is similar: 7 ft NW, 12-second period, 1346 energy, and a gentle offshore from the West at 9 mph. Two solid, clean mornings in a row.
The second week is a bit messier. Saturday and Sunday, September 5th and 6th, have rain and strong cross-offshore winds from the WNW. There’s still decent swell energy on Saturday afternoon with 8 ft at 11 seconds and 1363 energy, but the wind jumps up to 19 mph. At that point, it’s lookin’ rough and blown out. More of a kite surfer’s setup than a surfer’s, honestly.
So here’s the call: if you’re an experienced surfer after some size and power, Friday afternoon, August 28th is the one to circle on the calendar. Big, clean, and punchy. For a couple of good mornings, Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th of September are your best bets for clean conditions. The rest is small, windy, or flat. Keep an eye on it, though. Forecasts change.
Rusty.
