The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this outlook for El Brusco is a tough one. The whole 16-day window is a real struggle for paddle surfing. The water is sitting at 73°, which is a whopping 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, almost like a bath compared to what you’d expect.
Look, for the first two weeks, forget about it. From Thursday the 16th of July right through to the 30th, the wave comment is practically all “poor surf conditions.” The swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, and when it does bump up a little around the 20th and 21st, with chest-high swell (4ft to 5ft) from the north, the wind is cross-onshore, chopping it right up. The combined energy is weak, barely cracking triple digits (145 to 198). There’s just no quality to grab onto. You’d be staring at a flat, bumpy lake.
The real stand-out, and honestly the only one worth marking on your calendar, is the very end of the run. On Friday the 31st of July, the morning brings a proper pulse of groundswell. We’re looking at 6ft from the northwest with a long period of 12 seconds. That’s got some punch – the combined energy is a massive 865. Now, the wind is light and cross-onshore from the east-northeast, which is okay, but not perfect. For an advanced break like El Brusco, that’s a decent window. The swell is solid, over 8ft? No, it’s 6ft, so it’s a good muscle swell for experienced surfers. The water is still warm, but the crowd factor says “often,” so you’ll have company for the best session in a fortnight.
The rest of the last week is a washout. On the 30th, the swell gets big (6ft) and the period is very long (13 seconds), but a moderate onshore wind from the west-northwest at 15 mph turns it into a choppy, blown-out mess. That amount of energy (1222) with that wind direction would be a kite-surfer’s dream, not a surfer’s. For a paddle, it’s a no-go.
So, there you have it. A long, dry spell broken by one promising morning on the 31st. It’s a long-range call, so don’t lock it in, but it’s the only flicker of hope in the entire outlook.
Stay patient, and keep your eyes on that last Friday.
