The Lowdown
Alright, let’s look at what’s on offer for the next 16 days at El Brusco. Honestly, the start of this run is a total bummer. Through the end of August and into the first few days of September, you’re looking at poor surf, tiny waves, and messy wind. There’s a couple of glassy mornings, like Tuesday 25th August (0.7ft) and Monday 31st August (3ft), but the swell is so small it’s hardly worth the paddle.
Then we get a big pulse around Thursday 27th August, with a 6ft NW swell and a ton of energy, but the wind is a cross-shore 16 mph, so it’s going to be choppy and bumpy. Friday 28th August sees a massive 10ft NW swell, but the wind is cross-on and it’s a marginal call – that’s a big, wild, expert-only beast.
The real standout, the one you need to circle, is Thursday 3rd September. The morning session is looking all-time. We’ve got a 7ft NW swell, a 13-second period, which is a proper long-period groundswell with tons of energy. The wind is glassy, dead calm. That means clean, peeling, lined-up waves. This is a big swell (over 5ft), so it’s not for the groms, but for the advanced crew, it’s going to be firing. The water is 74°F, which is 4°F warmer than normal – way warmer than usual, so you’ll be in a shorty or spring suit.
The days after, Friday 4th and Saturday 5th September, keep the size up around 7 to 8ft, but the wind goes cross-shore and onshore, with some rain showers. The surf will be big and powerful, but rougher. For the experienced, Friday 4th September morning might still be okay with a 7ft NW swell, but the bump will be there.
So, the bottom line: the first week is a wash, but the second week has a killer window. If you’ve got one day to go, make it the morning of Thursday 3rd September. That’s the pick of the period.
