The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. What a run of weather we’ve got ahead – but to be honest, the surf is really going to test your patience here. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, messy, or just plain uncooperative conditions before anything worthwhile shows up.

The week starts quiet. Tuesday the 18th to Wednesday the 19th is all tiny waves, around 1ft to 2ft from the NW and NNW, with short periods. It’s basically flat with poor surf conditions, so leave the board in the car.

Thursday the 20th brings a little jump: the swell pushes to about 3ft from the NW, period up to 11 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (233), which sounds promising but the wind is all over the place – cross-shore, then onshore by the afternoon. Don’t get excited. The surf quality rating is still poor.

Friday the 21st sees a bit more size, 5ft from the NW, wave energy up to 450, but the period is moderate at 10 seconds. The wind is light cross-shore – not a disaster, but the forecast calls it “marginal” with light rain. It’s not terrible, but it’s not great. For a stronger crew, it’s worth a look.

Over the weekend, Saturday the 22nd morning could be the pick of this first week. The swell holds around 4ft from the NW with a 9-second period, and the wind goes glassy. That’s a pretty window, with wave energy at 186. It gets labelled as “surfable waves but very ordinary” – so take that for what it is. Afternoon cleans up a little with a cross-off breeze but drops to 3ft. Sunday the 23rd drops off again, tiny and choppy.

From Monday the 24th all the way through to Tuesday the 1st of September, it’s a grind. Lots of days with 2ft to 3ft waves, short periods, poor wind – a few glassy moments here and there but nothing that screams “drop everything and go.” The break at El Brusco is fairly consistent, but this stretch is just small and average. The water temperature is 75° – that’s about 4° warmer than normal for this time of year, which is notable and a little unusual.

Now, what you’ve really been waiting for: there is one window that stands out as the best on offer, but you’ll need to hold out until early September. Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon rolls in with a legit jump: swell size climbs to 6ft from the NW, period hitting 11 seconds, and the combined energy surges to 676. That’s a proper pulse of groundswell energy. The wind is light cross-onshore, but for a spot that’s fairly exposed to the NW, this is where it gets interesting. It’s only for the more advanced crew – this size is past the beginner zone. The potential is there.

Wednesday the 2nd of September keeps that energy going: 5ft to 6ft from the NW, period 11 seconds, energy 658 to 739. The wind is cross-shore, nothing perfect, but these are the biggest waves of the forecast. The risk of thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon is a factor, so keep an eye on the sky.

To be real with you, these early September pulses are your standout window. Everything before that is a write-off or just barely surfable. There’s a massive gap of nearly two weeks with nothing worth shouting about, so be patient. This coast tends to tease you, but when that NW groundswell lines up, it can deliver.

Rusty.
