The Lowdown
Right, grab a coffee, let’s talk about the next couple of weeks at El Brusco. This is a spot that needs a bit of luck, and honestly, for the first week and a half, there’s nothing doing. The water’s sitting at about 73°F right now, which is a solid 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a real anomaly, feels more like a tropical bath than a typical winter dip.
The first real flicker of life shows up on Monday, July 20th, with the swell starting to push up to 4ft out of the NNE, but the combo energy is still only moderate (145) and the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s messy. That carries through into Tuesday the 21st with a bit more size, but the wind is up to 16 mph, making it choppy and pretty unappealing for a paddle.
Then we hit a real lull again until Saturday, July 25th. That morning, something interesting appears: a long-period groundswell from the NNW at 3ft, but with a period of 14 seconds and a solid energy reading of 360. The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s not glassy, but it’s clean enough. The problem is the size is still pretty small. By Sunday the 26th, the swell is up to 4ft from the NW with a 12-second period, and energy is pumping at 405. Still, the wind is a gentle cross-onshore, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy.
Now, the standout. Circle the morning of Tuesday, July 28th. That’s the one. The swell jumps to 5ft out of the NW with a 12-second period, the combined energy is strong at 615, and the wind goes glassy – absolutely dead calm, off the NNW. That’s a rare combination for this break. The waves will be clean, lined up, and with that size, it’s not for beginners. It’s a solid advanced wave, so you need to know what you’re doing. The crowd factor here is ‘often’, so expect company, but the quality will be worth it. The afternoon goes cross-onshore, so the morning is the window.
After that, Wednesday the 29th still has some decent 4ft leftover swell, but the wind goes cross-shore, so it’s a bit more bumpy. Take the glassy morning on the 28th and run with it.
