The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Alright, let’s be straight with you – the 16-day window for El Brusco is a real mixed bag. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing at the start, then a few days that have some real potential, but you’ve gotta pick your moments. The swell energy is all over the place, and the wind is the make-or-break factor here.
The first few days are a write-off. From Sunday the 23rd right through until Wednesday the 27th, it’s just poor surf. Tiny waves, bad directions, and messy wind. You’d be wasting your time. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
Things start to show a pulse on Thursday the 27th morning. The swell bumps up to 3 ft from the NW, and the combined energy hits 108 – that’s moderate energy. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the SW, so it’s clean. It’s surfable, but honestly, it’s still very ordinary. Not worth rushing for.
Now, the standout. Friday the 28th morning is where it’s at. The swell is up to 5 ft from the NW, with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is a solid 530 (moderate to strong). The wind is light and cross-off from the SSW, keeping it clean. This is the best on offer in the whole window. It’s not huge, but it’s got enough push for a fun, lined-up wave. For advanced surfers, this is a go.
Saturday the 29th morning is also a serious contender. Swell is 7 ft from the NW, period 10 seconds, and the energy is 825 (strong). The wind is glassy from the WNW. That’s a big, clean swell. But look, at 7 ft, this is for experienced surfers only. The power is real. If you’re not comfortable in overhead solid waves, sit this one out. The afternoon gets messy with cross-onshore wind.
After that, it drops off. Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st are back to poor, messy conditions. Tuesday the 1st of September through to the end of the forecast is a total flat spell. Tiny waves, no energy, and nothing to get excited about. The 7th of September morning shows a spike in energy (501) with a 4 ft NW swell, but it’s described as marginal, so don’t bank on it.
So, the final word: Your best bet is Friday the 28th morning. Clean, solid 5 ft NW swell. Saturday the 29th morning is also a standout for the brave, with glassy 7 ft sets. The rest of the window is a whole lot of waiting.
Rusty.
