Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what we’ve got coming up.
To be honest, for the next week or so, it’s dead. There’s nothing happening from now until late on the 27th of July. The swell is tiny, the winds are rubbish, and the energy is just not there. It’s a proper flat spell.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on the morning of Monday the 27th of July. That’s at El Brusco. It’s a fairly consistent advanced spot, so it’s for the experienced crew. The combined swell energy is moderate (107), which means the ocean is finally stirring. The swell is a tiny 2ft, coming from the NNW with a 11-second period. That’s a long period groundswell, so it’ll have some proper shape. The big win here is the wind – it’s glassy. That’s a huge deal. You’ll be looking at smooth, clean waves. Just be aware that this spot can get crowded, so you might be sharing the lineup.
Things start to ramp up towards the end of the month. On the 29th of July, the swell picks up to 4ft from the NW with a 10-second period. The combined energy is strong (341). The wind is a light cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy but very surfable. The 30th of July is similar, with a solid 4ft NW swell and a 10-second period. The energy is still strong (309), and the wind goes light and offshore on the afternoon, which is great for clean conditions.
Now, the standout. On the 1st of August, the swell pushes to a solid 5ft from the NW, with a 10-second period. The combined energy is very strong (490). This is proper, powerful surf. The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s not perfect, but after all this flatness, this is the one to get excited about. It’s too big for beginners, but for the advanced crew, it’s the clear winner. The mornings will be the cleanest.
The 2nd of August drops back to 5ft from the NW, with the energy still strong (363). The wind is a cross-shore, so expect some chop. Then on the 3rd of August, the swell is 4ft from the NW with a 9-second period. The energy is moderate (216), but the wind turns light and cross-offshore, which will clean it up nicely. That’s another good session to aim for.
So, the first week is a total bust. The top pick is the morning of the 1st of August for the biggest, most powerful swell, but don’t sleep on the 27th of July for that first glassy, clean little wave.
Rusty.
