Table - best surf conditions forecast for Playa de Somo over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the next couple of weeks for our local stretch.
To be straight with you, this is a grim outlook. We’ve got a solid 16-day window ahead, but honestly, there’s nothing to get excited about. The first real chance of any wave action doesn’t show up until Friday the 24th, and even then, it’s not exactly firing. We’re looking at a long, dry gap from now until then, with nothing but tiny, weak, and messy conditions.
The water at Playa de Somo is sitting at a very warm 71°, which is a good 4° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a notable difference, you’ll feel it.
For the first few days, it’s all tiny, poor surf. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell is weak. The combined energy is in the dumps, with values like 74 and 89, which is just pathetic. There’s a brief moment on Tuesday the 14th morning where it goes glassy, but the swell is only 2 ft with a period of 5 seconds. That’s just a lake. Don’t bother.
The pattern stays flat and weak through the middle of the month. The winds are a mess, and the swell is a joke. There’s a bit of a northerly pulse on the 21st, but the wind is howling cross-offshore at 16 mph, so it’s clean but blown out. The combined energy gets up to 102, which is not even moderate, and the swell is only 3 ft. Not worth the paddle.
The only period that even registers a pulse is around Friday the 24th. Early that morning, we get a glassy moment with a 3 ft swell from the NNW, period 10 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 192. That’s moderate energy, and the glassy wind means it’ll be clean. It’s the best we’ve got, but it’s still only “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” The swell direction (NNW) is a solid match for the optimum for this sheltered spot. The crowds here are often, so expect company. The break is consistent, so it’ll be breaking.
But look, this is a beach break, and with a 3 ft swell and a 10-second period, you’re going to get short, weak walls. The combined energy later that afternoon jumps to 243, but the wind turns cross-onshore, ruining it. The following Saturday morning (25th) has a bit more energy (136) but the wind is onshore again.
For a real standout, the best bet is Friday the 24th, early morning. It’s the only time the stars sort of align: glassy wind, moderate energy (192), and the swell direction is right. It’s small, but it’s the cleanest you’ll see. For beginners, it’s fine, not too big. For everyone else, it’s just a session to get wet.
Honestly, this stretch is a write-off. A blank run like this is normal for this area when the wind and swell patterns don’t cooperate. The forecasts can change, but for now, there’s nothing to rush for.
Rusty.
