The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what Playa de Somo has to offer for the next couple of weeks. Honest truth: it’s a rough forecast. There’s a long stretch of real poor conditions, and you’ll be waiting for a few small windows if you want to get wet. But there are a couple early-morning moments that could make it worth your while if you’re sharp.
The first few days are basically flat and messy. From the 18th of July through the afternoon of the 20th, you’re looking at tiny dribble and poor conditions. On the 20th, the swell bumps to about 1.5m from the north, but it’s a short-period wind swell at only 7 seconds. With a moderate cross-shore wind, the quality is garbage. The combined energy hits 225 (moderate), so there’s some water moving, but don’t expect anything clean.
Moving into Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd, the swell stays between 1.1m and 1.5m from the north-northeast, period still short at 6-7 seconds. Energy is moderate, reaching 228 on Tuesday afternoon. The wind swings cross-offshore from the east-northeast, which is about as clean as you’ll see in this stretch. Tuesday afternoon is your best bet here if you’re an intermediate surfer, but these are not cracking waves—just the least ugly of the bunch.
Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th of July have a little stunner in the mornings. Glassy clean conditions with swell around 0.7m to 0.8m from the north, period holding at 6-7 seconds. The water temperature is a notable 22°C, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year—over 2 degrees warmer. Nice bonus for the early birds.
Sunday the 26th sees the swell climb again to around 1.3m from the north-northwest, period up to 8 seconds. Energy hits 191 (moderate). But the wind shifts cross-onshore from the north, creating chop. Surfable, but nothing to write home about.
The real standout of the entire 16-day window is Monday morning, 27th July. We’ve got 0.8m from the north-northwest, but the period is a solid 10 seconds, giving the waves some proper shape and push. Combined energy of 169 (moderate). The wind is glassy from the north-northeast, so the faces will be smooth and clean. This is the best session on offer. Crowds are common here, so expect company. The swell direction matches the ideal for this break—NNW—so it’s a good fit. The waves are small enough for intermediates, but not too big.
After the 27th, the quality drops off fast. The rest of July and early August is mostly poor surf with onshore or cross-onshore winds and tiny swells. The mornings on the 30th and 31st have clean winds but barely any size—just ordinary, surfable but nothing special.
If you can swing it, make the call for Monday morning the 27th of July. That’s the one. The Tuesday afternoons earlier are your fallback, but don’t expect much. Otherwise, it’s a long wait for any real waves at Somo.
Rusty.
