The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for El Sardinero - Primera. The water’s sitting at a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, coming in at 73°, so we’re about two and a half degrees above average – feels nice.
It’s a slow start, no doubt. The immediate forecast is pretty flat. Wednesday morning has tiny 1ft waves from the NNW with a short 6-second period, and the combined energy is a measly 9. That’s barely a ripple. The wind is light, cross-off, so it’s clean, but there’s just nothing to ride. The rest of Wednesday and most of Thursday stay in the doldrums – small, weak, and often cross-on. A bit of a write-off.
Things try to pick up on Friday the 21st. By the afternoon, we see 5ft from the NNW, period 10 seconds, and the energy hits 541. Wind is cross-off, making it clean. It’s surfable, but it’s not a standout. Saturday morning the 22nd goes glassy with 3ft swell from the NW, but the energy is only 205 – small and a bit ordinary.
After that, we hit another quiet patch. Sunday through Tuesday is mostly small, messy, and cross-on. The swell drops to 2ft, period 7 seconds or less, and energy down in the 50s. Not worth paddling out.
The real window opens up on Monday the 31st of August. That’s the one to circle. Monday morning we’ve got a solid 10ft swell from the NW, period 10 seconds, and the energy is a massive 1639 – that’s strong, powerful stuff. Light offshore wind from the SW, clean. That’s a proper session for experienced surfers. It’s big: over 8ft, so beginners stay out – this is for the crew who know what they’re doing. The swell direction (NW) matches the optimum (N) well enough, and the wind is glassy. This is the best on offer, no question.
The following day, Tuesday the 1st of September morning, still has decent 5ft from the NW with 504 energy and cross-off wind, but it’s a step down. Wednesday the 2nd morning looks good too: 6ft, period 9 seconds, energy 517, and glassy calm wind from the NE. Clean conditions again.
After that, the swell fades back to small, ordinary surf into Thursday the 3rd of September.
So, to sum it up: the first week is mostly a bust. The standout is Monday the 31st of August morning – big, clean, powerful. The second week has a couple of decent mornings but nothing that rivals that Monday.
Keep it between the flags, and I’ll see you out there.
