The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's take a look at what's on offer.
Well, I’ve got to be straight with you: it’s a flat spell for El Sardinero - Primera. Looking right across the whole 16-day window, there’s just nothing to get excited about. The first half of the run is dominated by tiny dribble; the second half doesn't bring any real relief either. It's one of those periods where you'd be better off giving the board a wax and doing some stretches, because you’re not going to need it in the water.
The water here is sitting at about 71° – that’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least a dip feels nice, but there's no surf to go with it.
The first real chance of anything even barely rideable shows up on Monday morning, July 20th, and even then it's a poor situation. The swell climbs to a measly 4 ft from the NNE, but the period is a woeful 6 seconds – that’s weak windswell with no push. The combined wave energy is only 148 (moderate), but with onshore wind from the NNE, it’s messy. It doesn’t get any better that afternoon either, with 4 ft and onshore breeze. Tuesday the 21st is much the same story: onshore ENE wind the whole day, with swell around 4 ft to 5 ft but that same short, weak period. The wind is onshore, so it’s choppy and blown out. This break is sheltered from the north, and the swell direction keeps arriving from the NNE, so nothing lines up.
We get a little reprieve on Wednesday morning, July 22nd – the wind goes cross-shore and light from the NW, but the swell is only 4 ft and still that short period. It’s slightly cleaner but the lack of quality is glaring. Thursday morning, July 23rd, is glassy – dead flat wind from the north, but the swell has dropped to 3 ft and the energy is just 57 (weak). You’d be on a log if you were out there.
After that, the whole second week is a dead loss. From Friday July 24th right through to the end of the month (July 30th), the swell never gets above 4 ft, with most days seeing 2 ft or less. Periods are short and weak, though there are some clean windows with offshore or cross-off winds, like Sunday morning July 26th, and again Monday morning July 27th. But with only 1 ft of swell from the NW, you’re looking at ankle-snatchers at best.
There is one slight tickle at the very end – Wednesday afternoon July 29th goes glassy with 2 ft, and Thursday morning July 30th is also glassy with a tiny 2 ft swell from the N. But let’s be honest, that’s barely moving water. For a spot that's fairly consistent, this is a disappointing run. Forecasts can change, so don’t throw the towel in completely, but for now, don’t waste the petrol.
Rusty.
