The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for Cantinho over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – the first week and a half is a tough slog. There’s a long gap of poor conditions straight through. From Thursday the 3rd right up until the morning of Wednesday the 11th, the wind is just a nightmare. It’s mostly cross-onshore, sometimes fresh and lumpy, and the swell is small and weak. It’s a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. The combined wave energy is weak to moderate at best, with values like 124 (Thursday morning) and 115 (Thursday afternoon), and it just gets messy from there. The swell is coming from the wrong direction for the point, too – mostly NNW, which isn’t its optimum NW. You’d be fighting the chop for nothing.
Then, finally, on the morning of Wednesday the 11th of September, the wind drops to glassy. The swell is only 2 ft from the NNW, but it’s clean. The energy is moderate (242). It’s a small, clean session for the logs, but it’s not a standout.
The real standout, though, is the morning of Sunday the 15th of September. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. We’ve got glassy conditions, a 3 ft swell from the NW, which is the optimum direction for this point break, and a very long period of 16 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell. The combined wave energy is strong, hitting 712. This is a classic point break setup: long period, perfect direction, and glass. It’s a beginner-friendly break, but with that period, it’s going to peel beautifully down the point. The water temperature is 68 °F, which is about average for this time of year (anomaly of -0.9 °F), so not much to worry about there.
The morning of Monday the 15th of September is another good option, with clean cross-offshore wind and a 4 ft NW swell (period 11 seconds, energy 413). It’s a solid session, but it’s not the magic of that Sunday morning.
This break is very consistent, but the window is tight. The good news is, when it comes right, it really comes right. Keep an eye on that Sunday the 15th. It’s still a fair way out, so the forecast could shift, but right now, that’s your best bet.
Rusty.
