The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the stretch ahead for Cantinho.
Well, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – this 16-day window is a tough one for surfers. The first few days offer just about nothing worth paddling out for, with a lot of lumpy, cross-shore chop and weak swell. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need the thickest wetsuit, but you’ll be mostly staring at a flat, messy ocean.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Monday, July 27th in the morning. We’ve got glassy conditions – dead calm wind – and a small 4ft swell from the NNW. The period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s not gonna have much punch, but it’s surfable. The combined energy is moderate at 250. It’s a beginner-friendly point break, so the waves will be small and forgiving. Definitely the best early option, but it’s not exactly firing.
Tuesday, July 28th morning sees a similar 4ft swell from the NNW, but with a longer 10-second period, which gives it a bit more shape. The combined energy bumps up to 376, which is moderate. But the wind is a light cross-on, and the forecast calls it marginal. Still, if you’re keen, that morning window might just squeeze out a couple of fun ones.
After that, it’s a long stretch of poor to non-existent surf. From Wednesday, July 29th right through to August 5th, the surf is small, choppy, and blown out. The wind is mostly cross-on or cross-shore, and the swell heights drop below 3ft for days. It’s a proper blank run. The break is fairly exposed and very consistent, so it’s not normal for it to be this quiet for this long – forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it.
Now, for the true standout in the entire forecast, you have to look all the way out to Thursday, August 6th. The morning shows a 3ft swell from the NNW, but here’s the kicker – the period jumps to 12 seconds, a nice long groundswell. The combined energy is up to 489, which is solid moderate. The wind is a gentle cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy but not terrible. This is the best looking day on the cards. The point break should handle that long-period swell nicely, giving clean, lined-up waves. Afternoon stays similar but with a cross-on breeze, so get it early.
August 7th also has some size, with 5ft in the morning from the NNW, but the wind is a moderate cross-on and the forecast says poor conditions. The energy is high at 558, but the chop will be messy. Only for the dedicated.
Overall, from now until August 5th, it’s a struggle. The only real standout is the morning of Thursday, August 6th – that’s your best bet for a proper surf. The rest is small, wind-affected, or just plain ugly. The crowds at Cantinho are often around, so don’t expect a quiet lineup even on the better days.
Rusty.
