The Lowdown
Alright folks, grab a coffee and let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Cantinho over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first week and a bit looks pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak waves and shifty onshore winds. It’s not until we get into the second week that things start to show some promise, but even then, the wind is a constant headache.
The first real pulse of size shows up on July 19th, with a NW swell pushing a bit over 4 ft. The combined energy is moderate (224), but with the wind coming straight onshore, the surface is going to be messy. That setup continues through the 20th, but we’re still fighting the wind.
Now, the one that starts to get the blood pumping is around July 25th. A long period swell from the NW rolls in with a period hitting 14 seconds, pushing wave heights to around 2 ft (352 combined energy). The wind is still cross-onshore and that’s a mood killer, but that long-period groundswell means real energy in the water. You’ll have longer waits between sets, but the waves will have more shape. Cantinho is a point break, so that long period should work well here – the sets won’t just close out. The crowds can be an issue here, so don't expect to have it to yourself.
By July 27th, we’re looking at proper size – over 7 ft from the NNW (586 combined energy). That's getting into big boy territory; not one for the beginners. The wind is still cross-onshore or cross, making for a choppy face. It’s surfable for experienced guys, but you’ll be fighting the wind all session.
The biggest pulse is forecast for July 28th and 29th. Swell is holding around 8 ft from the NNW, with combined energy peaking at a massive 1049. That’s serious power. With a period of 8 seconds though, it’s a shorter period swell, so it’ll be more of a wall of white water than clean lines. The wind stays strong and cross-shore, which again, kills the quality. This is expert-only territory, and honestly, the wind conditions make it look more like a kite-surfing day than one for a clean paddle out.
If I were to pick the best of a not-great bunch, it’d be the morning of July 19th with that 4 ft NW swell and light wind. It’s not perfect, but it’s the closest we get to decent conditions. For the long range, July 25th has the best potential for a proper groundswell – just watch the wind.
