The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for our local spot, Cantinho. It's a point break, very consistent, and it's a beginner-friendly wave. The water temp is running about average for this time of year, so nothing weird there.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is basically a write-off. We're looking at weak, short-period swell, and the wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, keeping things choppy and messy. The combined wave energy is low, barely cracking 100 for the first few days. From Friday the 17th through to the end of July, the surf is just poor. It's a long stretch of grovelly, weak waves. Even when the swell bumps up a little around the 21st and 22nd, the energy is only moderate, and the wind is still junk.
The real story, the one that's got my attention, is the very end of the forecast. We're looking at Monday morning, July 28th. This is the standout. The swell is solid at 8ft from the NNW, and the wind is forecast to be glassy. Glassy! That's a beautiful thing. The combined energy is strong, and while 8ft+ is getting into expert territory, this 8ft at a point break like Cantinho with glassy conditions will be proper, clean, lined-up waves. It's a long way out, so keep an eye on it, but that's the one to circle on the calendar. The morning of the 28th is the only time in the whole 16-day window that looks like a proper session.
The week after that, the 29th and 30th, the swell hangs around, but the wind gets nasty again – fresh and cross-onshore, making it a lumpy mess. Not worth it.
So, to sum it up: a lot of flat, blustery days ahead, but that one morning on the 28th of July with glassy conditions and a solid 8ft NNW swell is the only true standout. Don't hold your breath for anything else.
