Cantinho Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, Rusty here, let's have a good look at what's cookin' down at Cantinho. This is a really consistent point break, and it's good for beginners, but we got a bit of a dry spell to start things off.

So, for the next little while, we got a lot of wind messing things up. That fresh cross-onshore breeze is just gonna make it lumpy and choppy, and we're not seeing much of a window for clean waves despite some decent swell size popping up.

The first real glimmer of hope comes on Thursday morning, August 20th. It's not big, just a tiny 2ft swell out of the WNW, but the key here is it's glassy. That's a rare treat. The combined swell energy is weak (94), but with zero wind and that little groundswell (9-second period), it's going to be super clean and easy paddling. It's surfable, but nothing to get too excited about.

Then we hit a big gap. From Thursday afternoon all the way until the end of the month, it's pretty much all onshore wind and messy conditions. There's some proper size in there – we see a solid 6ft to 8ft swell from the NNW on and off, with combined energy hitting the 800s and even 900s (moderate to very strong), but the wind is just ruining it. An 8ft swell with a 22-mph cross-onshore is just a washing machine for anybody but a kiter, to be honest. That's expert territory with a side of frustration.

Now, if you're patient and you like a bit of a gamble, keep your eye on Saturday morning, August 29th. The swell is a decent 5ft from the NW, and it's got a nice 10-second period on it. The wind is light from the WSW, just a slight air making a light cross-onshore. It's only rated marginal, but it's the best looking setup in the whole outlook. Could be that sweet spot where the point starts to work. A 5ft NW swell with light wind at a point that loves NW swell... that's the one to watch.

After that, there's another spell of lumpy, choppy junk, with the swell getting big again (8ft) but still mostly cross-on wind. The whole second week is just a story of waiting for that one morning.

So, overall, if you're a beginner, the Thursday the 20th glassy session is your safest bet for a paddle. For everyone else, the standout is that Saturday the 29th. It's far out, so don't book the day off, but that's the one with the most potential for a clean shoulder at Cantinho.
