The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks. It’s a pretty quiet run for a while, so don’t be in a hurry to wax up just yet.
Right now, the water is sitting at 66°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year.
We’re starting off with a long stretch of nothing worth chasing. From Tuesday the 25th of August right through to the end of the month, the surf is just poor. The swell is small and weak, with energy levels barely reaching 139 at best, and the wind is all over the shop – cross, cross-on, and gusty. It’s a write-off.
Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th see a bit more size, with swell hitting 6 ft and 8 ft, and the energy climbs to 456 and 1333 respectively, but the wind is still messy. It’s just not clean enough to get excited about.
The first week of September is more of the same. The swell is there, sometimes up to 7 ft, but the wind stays cross or cross-on, and the conditions are described as poor. The energy is moderate, hitting 599 on the 4th, but it’s all a bit lumpy and choppy.
Now, look, there’s a glimmer on the horizon. Around Monday the 7th of September, we’ve got a swell coming in at 8 ft from the NW with a 12-second period. The energy is strong at 1862, and the wind is a cross-shore from the NNE. That’s a solid groundswell, and for a point break like Cantinho, that’s where it gets interesting. The direction is just about right for the optimum NW swell direction. This is the standout.
The Tuesday the 8th of September keeps the energy up at 1248 with 7 ft from the NW, and a 16-second period on the Tuesday afternoon. That’s a very long period groundswell, which will have plenty of punch. It’s best for a point break like this. The wind is cross-shore again, so it’ll be a bit choppy, but the power will be there.
Wednesday the 9th of September still has a 7 ft swell from the NNW, but the wind is back to cross-on, which is a bit of a letdown.
The best bet in the whole window is that Monday the 7th of September. The swell is solid, the direction is good, and the wind is workable. It’s a consistent spot, Cantinho, so it’s worth keeping an eye on as we get closer. The energy is strong, and it’s a point break, so that long-period groundswell will wrap in nicely. Just be aware that with 8 ft swell, it’s going to be one for the experienced crew.
For the rest of it, it’s a waiting game. Keep your fingers crossed those forecasts hold.
Rusty.
