The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's break it down.
The whole 16-day forecast is focused on just one spot, Cantinho. The first few sessions look clean, then the wind goes sideways for a solid week before a potential ripper shows up in early September. The water is running a bit colder than usual, about 2°F below average, so don't forget the rubber.
Cantinho is a beginner-friendly point break that gets consistent exposure. The first big standout is Saturday morning, August 22. We've got a 2ft NNW groundswell with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is 433 (moderate). But the stars align with glassy conditions – 5 km/h from the NW, dead calm. That's going to be the cleanest surf of the whole run.
Sunday morning, August 23 brings a bit more size at 2ft from the west, with an 11-second period and stronger energy at 725. The wind goes cross-off from the SSE, so it stays clean enough to enjoy, just not the perfection of Saturday morning.
After that, from Sunday afternoon through the next week, the wind cranks up to cross-shore and cross-onshore, often hitting 20-30 km/h. The wave quality goes south in a hurry, even when there's decent swell. For example, Friday morning, August 28 sees a big 3ft NW swell with an 11-second period and very strong energy (2098), but the wind is cross-on at 10 km/h, making it a choppy, expert-only mess at that size.
The gaps in decent surf are a few days long during that windy stretch in late August. The parking lot at Cantinho is often full, so expect company on the clean sessions.
Looking way out to Saturday, September 5, there's a promising call for the morning. A 2ft NW groundswell with a very long 13-second period (strong energy at 1158) and a light 5 km/h offshore wind from the NW. That's a recipe for clean, powerful waves that will really peel down the point. It's a long way out, but it's the one to circle on the calendar.
After that, the swell tapers off into soft 1ft stuff with cross-winds. Bottom line: the morning of August 22 and September 5 are the cream of the crop. Don't sleep on that glass.
Rusty.
