The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here with the long-range outlook for your local waves. Let's get straight into it.

We've got a bit of a mixed bag coming our way over the next couple of weeks. The first few days are pretty average, but there's some real potential if you can wait it out. The standout window is shaping up for the end of next week into the start of the following week.

Right now, at Cantinho, it's a bit of a write-off. We've got a weak, short-period NNW swell coming in at 3ft with a cross-on wind, making for poor surf. The water temp is sitting at 64°F, which is about 5°F colder than normal for this time of year – that's a notable chill, so you'll want a decent wetsuit.

Sunday the 13th offers a small glimmer. It's still only 3ft from the NW, but the morning is looking glassy with those ESE offshore winds. The combined energy is moderate at 427 and the period is a long 13 seconds, which will put some shape into it. It'll be small and clean for a beginner-friendly session.

Things get a bit disappointing for the rest of that week. We've got a stretch of poor conditions with choppy, onshore winds and messy surf. The energy stays low, under 200 in most cases. Not worth paddling out for.

Now, here's where it gets interesting. By Saturday the 19th, a much longer period swell (14 seconds) starts to fill in, hitting 6ft from the NW. The energy jumps right up to 1678, which is strong. The morning is light cross-shore, so it's just on the cusp of being good.

Sunday the 20th is the first real standout. The morning session at Cantinho is looking prime. We've got offshore winds from the ESE blowing at just 3 mph, clean as a whistle. The swell is a solid 6ft from the NNW with a long 12-second period, and the energy is punching at 1108. This is the kind of clean, lined-up surf that'll have everyone grinning. It's still a manageable size, so intermediate surfers will be into it.

Then, Monday the 21st of September is looking like the best of the whole outlook. The morning is excellent for experienced surfers. We've got a 7ft swell from the NW with a very long 14-second period, pushing a massive 1785 combined energy. The wind is light from the S, giving us a clean, cross-off texture. That's a powerful, well-shaped groundswell. Keep in mind, with a period that long and a beachbreak setup, it might break a bit straight, but for a point like Cantinho, it should be absolutely firing. This one is the clear winner, but you'll want some experience under your belt at that size.

After that, the swells back off a bit, but there are still a few tidy sessions. Tuesday the 22nd morning is glassy with a 6ft NW swell – another clean option. Wednesday the 23rd morning is dead calm and glassy with a smaller 5ft NNW swell.

The rest of that last week drops right off, with tiny swells and poor winds taking over, so don't expect much after that.

So to wrap it up: endure the poor start, and you'll be rewarded. The absolute pick is Monday the 21st of September, with Sunday the 20th being a very close second for cleaner, slightly smaller waves. The long-range call for that Monday has some uncertainty, but the signs are all there.

Stay frothy.

Rusty.
