The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening.
The outlook at Cantinho is a long, quiet slog. For a break that’s normally very consistent, this 16-day window is filled with more poor calls than good ones.
We start on Friday morning, August 28th, with a 7ft swell from the WNW, a 11-second period groundswell, and a lot of power in the water – combined energy of 1121. But the cross-shore wind messes it up. By the afternoon, it’s even worse. From Saturday the 29th all the way through Monday, September 7th, it’s a rough run. Moderate to fresh cross-onshore winds, lumpy, choppy, and just not inviting. The swell hangs between 1ft and 6ft, but the wind is always wrong.
The first tiny break in the clouds comes Thursday morning, September 3rd. We get a light cross-offshore breeze from the ENE and the report says “clean.” The swell is only 4ft from the NNW with a short 7-second period and a weak energy of 185, but it’s ridable. Then Friday morning, September 4th, is glassy – dead calm – but the swell is tiny, just 1ft from the WNW, energy down at 66. You’d need a longboard.
The one session that truly stands out is Thursday morning, September 10th. The swell jumps back up to 8ft from the NNW, still a short 8-second period, and the combined energy is 591. The wind is a light cross-on from the NW, which isn’t perfect, but it’s the biggest swell of the entire run. For a point break, that size might offer a few corners if the tide plays ball. The afternoon goes onshore, so it’s a dawn-patrol-only deal.
Water temp is about 67°, which is normal for the time of year. Overall, there are long stretches of days with nothing worth paddling out for. The cleanest window is the 3rd morning, and the biggest gamble that might pay off is the 10th morning.
Rusty.
