The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with the long-range look for Cantinho.
We’ve got a bit of a rough patch to sit through before things clean up, so don’t get too antsy. The next week and a half is mostly a write-off with a lot of wind and chop messing up the lineup.
Let’s start with what we’ve got on the table. The water is sitting at 66°, which is a bit colder than what we’d normally expect for this time of year – you’ll feel that chill.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Saturday, September 12th. The morning shows the wind dropping right off to glassy conditions from the ESE at only 3 mph. It’s not going to be big, with swell at 4ft from the NNW, and the period is short at 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit weak and crumbly. The combined energy is pretty low at 176. But you know what? When it’s glassy, it’s all about the fun, not the power. Surfable but very ordinary.
Things get a bit more interesting on Sunday, September 13th. The morning session is where I’d be pointing the car. The wind switches to a light cross-offshore from the NE at 6 mph, which is going to groom that 2ft swell from the NW into something clean. That swell has got some grunt too – the period jumps to 13 seconds (groundswell territory), and the energy hits 399, which is moderate. It’s not big, so it’s perfect for beginners, and the quality should be good. Just a heads up, Cantinho can get crowded often, so expect some company if the sun’s out.
After that, we slip back into a long stretch of onshore junk until Monday, September 21st. That morning offers another clean-up with a light cross-offshore breeze from the ENE at 6 mph. The swell is a touch bigger at 4ft from the NW, with an 11-second period and a moderate energy reading of 531. The forecast says “good surf conditions” and with those winds, the point should be running smooth.
Honestly, the standout window in this whole 16-day run is that Sunday the 13th morning. Small, clean, and with that long-period push, the point at Cantinho should offer up some really fun lines. The Monday the 21st morning is also a strong second option for cleaner waves, but it’s further out, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
