The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this 16-day stretch for Cantinho is mostly a bust. We’re looking at a long, drawn-out period of onshore and cross-onshore winds that are gonna chop up any swell that rolls in. The water temp is sitting around 69°, which is pretty much dead average for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
The run kicks off with nothing. Monday the 10th through to Saturday the 15th is a write-off. We’ve got small, weak swell mostly around 2ft to 6ft, but the wind is just ugly – moderate breezes from the north and northwest keeping everything messy and cross-choppy. The wave energy is all over the place, but the quality is poor. It’s a grim start.
Then, on Sunday the 16th, we finally get a glimpse of hope. The morning shows some real promise. A 6ft NW groundswell (9-second period) with an easterly cross-offshore breeze at just 3 mph. Combined wave energy is a solid 517 (moderate energy) and the report says "clean". That’s your standout window. For a brief moment, it’s gonna look good, with clean, lined-up waves. Keep in mind, longer period swell like this tends to stand up and break a bit straighter on a beach, but the offshore wind here will hold it up nicely. This is the one to circle on the calendar.
But don’t get too excited. The afternoon on the 16th sees the wind flip onshore from the WNW, and it’s back to poor conditions. Sunday the 16th morning is it.
After that, we slide back into mediocrity. Monday the 17th through to Monday the 24th is a long stretch of onshore junk. Sizes fluctuate between 1ft and 5ft, but the wind is never your friend. There’s a brief moment on Wednesday the 19th morning with light southerly cross-offshore winds and a small 3ft swell, but the energy is weak (135) and the report says “surfable but very ordinary.” It’s a far cry from good.
The real standout, if you can wait that long, is Tuesday the 25th. Glassy conditions, zero wind, and a solid 7ft NW swell with a 10-second period. The combined energy jumps to 842 (strong energy) and the report says "expect very good surf conditions". That’s a morning session that could be seriously special. The swell is getting up there in size – over 5ft, so it might be a bit much for beginners, but for everyone else, that’s a proper day. The morning glass will have it pristine. The wind shifts onshore in the afternoon, so get out early.
Honestly, for Cantinho, the pickings are slim. The Sunday the 16th morning is your near-term chance for clean waves, and the Tuesday the 25th morning is the long-range promise that could be a cracker if the forecast holds.
Rusty, signing off.
