The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Praia do Magoito.
Honestly, the next week and a half is looking pretty dismal. We've got a long stretch of poor surf conditions ahead, with hardly anything worth paddling out for. The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is pretty much what you'd expect for this time of year, so that's not the issue.
The first few days, from Tuesday the 18th of August, are a write-off. Tiny, weak swells with messy cross-onshore winds. Forget about it.
We do see a bit of a pulse building around Thursday the 27th of August, with the swell height picking up to 4ft in the morning and climbing to 6ft by the afternoon from the NW. That's a solid size, but it's coming with a 10-second period – decent groundswell – and the energy is moderate to strong (283 in the morning, 583 in the afternoon). The problem is the cross-on wind from the NNW. It's not going to be clean. By Friday the 28th, we're still looking at 5ft NW swell, but the wind is fresh and lumpy, making it a tough session. This whole stretch through to the end of August is just cross-on and choppy.
The one true standout, the only real glimmer of hope, is on Monday the 31st of August. The morning session is the pick. The wind swings to a light NE at 3 mph, turning it glassy. That's a major positive. The swell is a clean 3ft from the WNW with a 10-second period and moderate energy (168). It's a reef break that's exposed to the SW and very consistent, so the shape should be there. The water temp is still normal. Keep in mind, the crowds are "sometimes" here, so you might have a few others out, but for these conditions, it's worth it.
After that, the first of September offers a 5ft NW swell with a short 8-second period in the morning, and a gentle cross-shore wind. It's a marginal call, but it’s there. The following days look like they drop back off into poor conditions.
So, to sum it up: a long, flat and windy run until the 31st of August. That Monday morning is the one to circle. It's not a huge swell, but with glassy conditions and a decent groundswell, it's the best this 16-day window has to offer.
Rusty out.
