The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, taking a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it's a bit of a quiet stretch for the most part, but there's a window of hope for those who can wait.
Right off the bat, things are looking pretty average. The water temp at São João is sitting at 67°, which is about 2° cooler than usual for this time of year, so nothing wild, just a touch on the fresh side. The first recommendation doesn't come up until the 16th, so we're looking at more than a week of pretty ordinary conditions. The energy in the water stays weak, barely cracking three digits, and the wind is relentless from the north-northwest, keeping things choppy and messy.
Now, let's talk about the one real standout. The best surf on offer is on Monday, 17th August. The morning session is where it's at. We've got a clean 6ft swell rolling in from the NNW, with a moderate wave energy of 556. The wind is glassy—just a slight air, which is a massive plus. It's a fairly consistent break, and the swell direction is a solid match for what this spot likes. The period is a short 9 seconds, so it's wind swell, but with that glassy surface, it should still be a lot of fun. Just be aware, the swell is over 5ft, so it might be a bit much for absolute beginners, but it's not quite into heavy territory.
The other decent-looking window is the Sunday, 16th August morning. That's a 5ft swell from the NW, also with glassy conditions and a short period of 8 seconds. The energy is moderate at 343. It's a solid option, but the Monday morning is the clear winner.
After that, things go back to being average. The wind picks up again, and the swell drops off. For the second week, the outlook is pretty flat overall. São João is a beach and jetty setup, and with the persistent cross-onshore winds most of the time, it's more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one when the wind is up.
So, to sum it up: hold on through the first week, and get ready for a couple of glassy mornings on the 16th and 17th. The 17th is the pick of the bunch.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
